Ongoing management is supported by the Lower Murray Darling Catchment Management Authority FOREWORD 1 FOREWORD This booklet has been prepared as an introduction for visitors to Nanya. Nanya is managed for conservation, research and teaching and affords protection to highly significant environments including two endangered communities and seventeen endangered or vulnerable species. On your visit, please respect these values. NANYA STATION Nanya Station is located in the Scotia country of far western New South Wales and consists of the Nanya Western Lands Pastoral Lease 3281 – Perpetual Leasehold Lot 1244 in Deposited Plan 762778, Parish of Winnebaga, County of Tara. Nanya Homestead complex 2 BACKGROUND The Scotia region has one of the shortest stock grazing histories of western NSW. Along with five other properties, Nanya was created as a pastoral lease in 1927. Previously the area was part of the large Lake Victoria lease and stock grazing occurred only in wet years (Withers 1989). The original lease was taken up by Gordon Cummings in 1927. He first dug a dam near the southeast corner of the property. A larger ground tank and homestead at the site of the present complex was later established. An area around the homestead was cleared and cropped to provide feed for the horses used in digging the earth tanks. The ruins of the original building are located between the shearing shed and Homestead Tank. -

(Photo: Brenden Metcalf) Prepared for: Sustainability Pty Ltd Unit 3/118, Flora Terrace, North Beach, WA, 6020 Prepared by: Cameron Everard, Mike Bamford and Brenden Metcalf BAMFORD CONSULTING ECOLOGISTS 23 Plover Way, Kingsley, WA, 6026 26th September 2011 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Diatreme Resources Limited proposes to develop the Cyclone Mineral Sands deposit in Western Australia within the northern area of the Eucla Basin and flanking the South Australian border. As part of environmental impact assessment, Bamford Consulting Ecologists was engaged to conduct a preliminary desktop fauna assessment to identify the fauna values of the Cyclone deposit project area. The key objectives of the fauna assessment were to: conduct a desktop review to identify the vertebrate fauna assemblage that may occur within or adjacent to the project area; investigate the likelihood of conservation significant species being present; identify and describe general vegetation and soil associations ("habitats") present; identify potential impacts of the project upon fauna values, and propose management measures to mitigate these impacts. The desktop assessment identified 195 fauna species that may occur in the project area, including 2 frog, 64 reptile, 100 bird and 29 mammal species. A total of 20 conservation significant fauna species was identified and include four mammals, two reptiles and 14 bird species. From the conservation significant taxa identified the species of most concern include the: Giant Desert Skink, Woma, Sandhill Dunnart, Southern Marsupial Mole, Crest-tailed Mulgara and Nullarbor Quail-thrush. -

This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Quantifying Ecological Constraints on Motion Signaling

Peters Animal Behaviour Group, Department of Ecology, Environment and Evolution, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia The environment in which animal signals are generated has the potential to affect transmission and reliable detection by receivers. To understand such constraints, it is important to quantify both signals and noise in detail. Investigations of acoustic and color signals now utilize established methods, but quantifying motion-based visual signals and noise remains rudimentary. In this paper, we encourage a more complete consideration of motion signaling environments and describe an approach to quantifying signal and noise in detail. Signals are reconstructed in three-dimensions, microhabitats are mapped and the noise environment quantified in a standardized manner. Information on signal and noise is combined to consider signal contrast from multiple viewpoints, and in any of the habitats we map. We illustrate our approach by examining signals and noise for two allopatric populations of the Australian mallee military dragon Ctenophorus fordi. By “placing” signals in different microhabitats we observed similar signal contrast results within populations, but clear differences when considered in microhabitats of the other population.
