NAME ORIGIN SIGNIFICANCE

Boelke Place Grace Fairley Medical practitioner Boelke Grace Boelke was one of the first women medical (1870-1948) graduates of the University of Sydney. She was founder of the Professional Women’s Association and a strong advocate of improved conditions for women.

Herring Place Dame Mary Medical practitioner and community worker Ranken Lyle Dame Mary Herring was one of the first women Herring DBE(C), medical graduates of the University of . CStJ She achieved first class honours in all subjects. (1895-1981) Mary was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1960 for service to nursing in Victoria.

Mary Cecile Medical practitioner (Molly) Longfield Daughter of Dame Mary and Sir . nee Herring Mary worked tirelessly for the good of her patients. (1924-2007)

Ida Birchall Crescent Ida Lois Birchall Obstetrician and gynaecologist MBE(C) Ida Birchall was one of Tasmania’s first female (1906-1994) doctors. She became the first Tasmanian member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1936. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to medicine in 1969.

Rag Holmes Street Roland Adrian Medical practitioner and community worker Glennie (Rag) Rag Holmes was a World War II medical officer Holmes AM before settling in Yass, NSW, where he practised (1918-2007) for 35 years in partnership with Dr David Graham. These were medically challenging years when accidents were frequent on the Hume Highway and before Canberra was equipped with advanced medical services. He was an accomplished musician and in 1983 was appointed a member of the Order of Australia and later awarded a Centenary Medal for his voluntary service to the community.
