The specimen no longer exists but the original full photograph in the journal of Indian Art and Industries 1916 shows the fine quality of the work executed by wood car­ vers of Gujarat in the past.

    Design Concept for Rural Housing in Western India for IAY and Other Similar Scheme (based on pilot study of Gujarat Region) Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Government of India 35 Preface As per the Report of the Working Group setup by the Government of India on Rural Housing for 11th Five Year Plan, the total rural housing shortage between 2007-2012 is estimated to be 47.3 million. Out of this 90 percent is for the BPL families. In order to facilitate this ever increasing housing shortage, the Ministry of Rural Development is operating the Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) primarily to help construction/upgradation of dwelling units for members of SC/ST, freed bonded labours and others falling below the poverty line, non SC/ST rural households by providing them a lump-sum financial assistance. The present ceiling as grant of assistance per unit under IAY is Rs. 70,000/- in plain areas and Rs. 75,000/- for hilly difficult areas. IAY Housing Policy is strategically left open ended so that beneficiary can build house as per his/ her requirements and also similarly choose the most appropriate local materials. With varying geo climatic conditions, hazard scenario and living habits of rural masses in different parts of the country, it is important to know the pattern of housing typology, materials availability and living pattern of the people in the area under consideration. A pilot study was made in the rural areas of Gandhinagar and Anand districts of Gujarat to understand the need of local people for planning and prevailing practices of house construction.

ONGC has proposed Drilling of 108 development wells, laying of, 4” and 8” dia. Oil and gas flow lines & establishment of 03 nos. of EPS, 01 No. of WHI , 03 Nos. of Water injection Facilities and 03 nos. of ETPs in operational areas of Cambay Asset,. The total Block Area is 820.82Sq km 2. The Total Project Cost is INR of Rs. 890 Crores/-. Objective and Scope of EIA study The Objective of EIA study is to meet the regulatory environmental clearance criteria as well as to ascertain a sustainable development through the assessment of likely impacts due to project related activities on the surrounding environment. The study envisages likely assessment of negative impacts and alleviation of these negative impacts, to such extent that it avoids/mitigates any harm/ permanent changes in the naturally existing environment. The scope of the EIA study includes detailed characterization of the existing status of the terrestrial and socio-economic environment within the study area, identification of the potential environmental impacts of the project, and formulation of an effective Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to prevent, control & mitigate the adverse environmental impacts, and ensuring the environmental compliance.

Shah Science College, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The ground water quality of some villages of Petlad Tahsil, of Gujarat, India,are determined by physico-chemical methods. Fifteen water samples from different villages are under studied for assessment of ground water. One sample from each village is under assessment of Physico-chemical solution and various quality parameter are measured including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness(TH), content of 2+ 2+ - 2- calcium(Ca ), magnesium(Mg ), total alkalinity(TA), chloride(Cl ) and sulphate(SO 4 ) concentration present in water. The chemical analysis of water samples show considerable variations and also most of the samples comply with WHO standards for the parameter measured. The results of physico-chemical analysis of water are discussed.
