Kaiwhakahaere / Chairman Paul Madgwick Born and bred in Hokitika 52 years ago, I still live on the West Coast where I am the editor of the Greymouth Star, Hokitika Guardian and West Coast Messenger newspapers. My parents were married at Bruce Bay, my mother‟s hometown, and my two elder brothers were born there. The family later moved to my dad‟s hometown of Rimu, where I was brought up and spent most of my life. I have been involved with our hapū „politics‟ for over 30 years, serving initially as a 20- year-old member of the old Mahitahi Māori Committee with our kaumātua, who set me on the path of researching and compiling our Ngāti Māhaki whakapapa to make it accessible to whānau in written form. This later led me to researching our hapū history, which was published in 1992 as “Aotea: A History of the South Westland Maori.” In 1988, I helped organise the big whānau hui at Bruce Bay that led to the formation of our Rūnanga. From that time onwards I have served on the Executive on and off for 21 of its 28 years, serving variously as secretary, treasurer and chairman (1990–91), returning as chairman from 2001 to the present day, apart from a three-year break in the middle. I also chaired the Marae Building Komiti as the Executive saw through the completion of our marae, from start to finish, transforming a remote block of thick bush and swamp into Te Tauraka Waka ā Māui Marae. I am especially proud of having instigated the Ngāi Tahu and police action that finally put a stop to the theft of our pounamu, seeing it through to its conclusion in court. I represent Makaawhio in a voluntary capacity on the board of our health and services agency Poutini Waiora and also the West Coast District Health Board iwi committee, Tatau Pounamu. I was also appointed by Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu to its historical advisory committee Te Kaihika. Outside of the Runanga and the newspaper, I serve on the St Mary‟s Hokitika 150 Committee, secretary of the Rimu-Woodstock Heritage Committee, and a judge for the New Zealander of the Year regional awards. I was born in Hokitika .My parents lived and worked in Bruce Bay .My Dad, Stanley Scott worked in the Bush for the local sawmill. We moved to Ross when the mill closed down in the early 1940's. My view of our Takiwa is that we are situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. We must maintain that beauty, we must also maintain our history our language and our aspirations for the future. My particular interest has always been in maintaining the stability of our takiwa. We must always be mindful of how our Land is used not only by ourselves but those around us in the various industries that make the Coast tick. Another interest I have is in education. My generation had very little encouragement to learn Te Reo Maori. Indeed when I went to school it was discouraged. Maureen and I always encouraged our kids to be involved where possible, in Maori classes at school. I'm pleased that we had some success and that has flowed on to the next generation. I am also keen to see us as a Runanga develop our own industries in a number of areas.eg: Tourism, Pounamu, farming . I would like to see us taking a greater role in Tourism as I am of the belief that we have so many areas that we could develop, such as guided walks in areas that are of great interest to us. Finally I would ask you to vote for me at our AGM as an executive member.
