For this edition, we caught up with Darby Dan Farm=s Robert Hammond.

TDN: Tell us a bit about where you=re from.

RH: I'm from the south of England, originally. South London, Sussex--beautiful, right near the coast in the south of England. That's where my family is from, but I lived for a long time in Newmarket. I was an assistant trainer there, but that was a long time ago now, that was back in mid-90s and I came over here in 1997. I was assistant to a gentleman named Paul Howling, who trained near the Limekilns, a famous gallop in Newmarket. It=s a beautiful place, and we had a small stable with 30, 40 horses. Treve and her filly by Siyouni | Zuzanna Lupa We raced all over England, and it was good times early in my career.

EUROPEAN EXPORTS

With Robert Hammond Cont. from p1

RH: My interest came through my father. He started out as an owner in England. His first horse, he had 10% in a partnership like everybody else, and I got involved and interested. Over the years, he had a few more horses, and I used to go to the races with him as a young boy and I decided I wanted to be a racehorse trainer at the age of 11 or 12.

TDN: Why did you decide to come to America?

RH: I came over for the horse business. First I came over to Texas for a year, and I was in Lone Star Park hot walking horses and then worked my way up to assistant. Then I decided it was far too hot in Texas and I would have to come and live in Kentucky. I came [to Kentucky] for a sale. It was so beautiful here and the weather was much more English style, so I decided to move up here and started a small farm. It's been 22 years now.

TDN: Is there anything you miss about England?

RH: I miss some friends, a few friends that I had in England, but generally not, no. This is my home for a long time now, my family is here, I'm married, I have three lovely children, so I'm happy here. I've never had any homesick feelings for England or Europe.

TDN: And is there anything about Kentucky that you=d have a hard time giving up if you were to leave?

RH: I do like the bourbon, I've got to admit. I've grown to enjoy the bourbon side of things, and with the whole new bourbon tour feature, that's been great.

TDN: When you go home, do your family and friends comment on your accent?

RH: When I go home to England, they say I have an American accent, which I can't hear one way or another and I don't think my wife does either, but when I go home it definitely gets a bit more English, sounds a bit more like the Royal Family.

SANTA ANITA: SEISMIC 'OLD WORLD' COMMENDS BRAVE NEW ONE ON LASIX by Chris McGrath CHANGES, UNCERTAINTY The landmark prohibition of raceday Lasix, projected by a coalition of major American racetracks on Thursday, is being LEAVE STAKEHOLDERS received with unsurprising warmth by European horsemen, who have long complained about trans-Atlantic disparities in the HOPEFUL & WORRIED regulation of medication. Less predictable, perhaps, is a disposition among the more knowledgeable to give the American industry time and space to overcome what they recognise as perfectly legitimate anxieties about adjusting to a different way of doing things. Official reaction from European regulatory bodies has been carefully bland, perhaps eager to avoid the kind of triumphalism or aggression that might irritate American stakeholders approaching such a sensitive crossroads. Fittingly given California's tectonic foundations, the massive jolts that have ruptured the racing industry here in the Golden State over the past seven weeks have indeed been seismic, shaking and shifting the very ground into which thousands of trainers, breeders, owners, jockeys, racetrack staff, handicappers, and all others kind of ancillary industry support have set root. But now as the initial fallout is beginning to lose intensity, so too is the dust beginning to settle on the rearranging landscape, giving many the chance to look around and take stock at the shifts that have also reverberated nationwide. Just this Thursday, a consortium of racetracks around the country announced that they are following The Stronach Group's lead and phasing out the use of Lasix, starting with 2-year-old-racing in 2020, followed by the elimination of Lasix in black-type races the following year. Top of the pile for many in California is how the past seven weeks have marked a significant reduction in catastrophic breakdowns at the track, when compared to months prior. Santa Anita cont. from p1 Between Mar. 11 and Apr. 17, there was one fatality out of 3,622 timed workouts, including routine training. Over three weekends of racing, there was one fatality out of 691 runners. "Any horses that I have any doubts about, they're not running," said Santa Anita racing secretary, Steve Lym, emphasizing the added scrutiny that horses are placed under before racing, and before and after scheduled workouts. "We've had horses come back a little funny after they gallop, a vet has checked them out, put them on the vet's list," he said. "Those sorts of things are happening every day. People are more cautious. Vets are more vigilant. I think trainers are more vigilant, really."

Steve Lym | Benoit Photo Nevertheless, given the significance of the ground-rattling changes, many are concerned about the potential short and long-term ramifications of these changes on the sport, and have already started modifying their usual plans. "The uncertainty is the killer," said Tim Cohen, of Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn. "Typically, the past two years I've gone to OBS [April sale] and picked up six 2-year-olds each year. I'm not even going to OBS this year. I couldn't bring myself to invest with such an uncertain future out here." In the immediate future, concerns have focused on the number of runners at Santa Anita. The average field sizes for the first two weekends of racing after the hiatus--8.5 and 8.1 respectively--compared favorably to average field sizes over the past three years during the winter/spring meets at the track: 7.85 in 2018, 7.57 in 2017, and 7.77 in 2016, according to DRF data. The average field size for the last weekend of racing was 6.4, however, and DRF has reported that next five Thursday cards have been cancelled due to a lack of race-ready runners. Morey, accusing his assistant of administering an alkalinizing agent via a "dose syringe" to two of Morey's horses on race-day, in violation of CHRB rules. The extra scrutiny given horses in general may also have had an effect, said Lym. But given the recent reduction in fatalities, a temporary drop in field sizes may be a necessary trade-off if potentially "at risk" horses which might have slipped through the cracks originally are prevented from running and working, he said--just as long as it is temporary. Jeff Blea, a Santa Anita-based private veterinarian and current chair of the American Association of Equine Practitioners' Racing Committee, said he agreed. "That's what needs to happen," he said. "People are doing their jobs. Trainers are doing their jobs. Veterinarians are doing their jobs. People aren't wanting to push these horses and take those risks like they did before." Nevertheless, working, we'll change it." "there's been a big shift in that we're not really injecting Getting back to normal might also include the track's unique anything, because we're not sure how to incorporate the new downhill turf course, which hasn't been used since the Peter rules into daily life," said Carpenter. Because while there are different views, some people say there's more to Lasix than just [prevention of] bleeding. John Oxx | Tattersalls

Certainly Oxx is adamant that any such moral margins to Lasix cannot be extended to other medication. As he says, Lasix has never been "the only game in town." "Lasix never bothered me too much, to be honest," he said of competing in the U.S. "It was all the other things that nobody ever spoke about. Up until relatively recent years, horses could even race on anabolic steroids in certain states. And then you've got the shot of anti-inflammatories the day before a race, all this sort of thing. You can't justify masking pain, with bute or whatever; and there's no justification for giving them anabolic steroids to help them sustain an intensive campaign." Even so, he reiterated his sympathy for American trainers whose goalposts are about to be moved. "They've had to rely a lot on medication in its various forms to try and get the best results, and it's going to be a shock to the system to do without," he said. "But it has to be good in the long term. You can't keep kicking the can down the road, leaving it for the next generation to deal with. It's not good for the breed, it's not good for the image--and ultimately it's not good for the horse, who has to come first in all this. So I'm glad to hear what's happening and I think everyone would welcome a change, even if it's not going to be easy." After all, as he observes, Coolmore have never lost faith with the American Thoroughbred. And nor should anyone else, when American dirt sires of the best type offer the exceptional constitution and class to carry speed two turns. That said, the pendulum can be expected to swing only slowly in terms of the European market for a post-reform generation of American sires. European Lasix Reaction cont. "The implications are quite obvious," he said. "The new rules would suit some American trainers more than others, for a start. But from a European trainer's point of view, there are two sides to it. Firstly, when you get a horse that has this issue [bleeding], you'll find that outlet [of selling to the U.S.] has been taken away. A horse that might have had a future over there will no longer have one. But then on the positive side, I can see there being a short- to mid-term spike in demand for European animals, emerging from a Lasix-free environment." Though Osborne deals in horses in training, he can envisage parallel developments in the yearling market. "There are going to be certain American strains that will suffer more than others," he suggested. "It's not totally proven, that there is a genetic weakness. But anecdotally, it certainly feels like a strong one. If you're buying American stock, and both parents raced on Lasix, you just don't know whether or not there was an issue. "Being totally selfish for a moment, what's happening could create more opportunities for us to go out there and race, and also to go out there and sell. They're going to need animals from somewhere that are relatively free of these issues."

Doubledogdare S. cont. WAR STORY SEEKS REDEMPTION IN CT CLASSIC She resurfaced to defeat a pair of next-out winners going seven panels at Aqueduct Nov. 17, and was most recently second in the sloppy, one-mile GIII Rampart S. at Gulfstream Dec. 15. Finding similarly wet conditions on seasonal debut here, the homebred broke well from her rail draw and was ridden along by Jose Ortiz to grab a clear lead hitting the first bend. She posted splits of :24.25 and :47.93 as Go Google Yourself--a last- out upsetter of Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d’Oro)--ratcheted up the pressure. That rival continued to give game chase in the lane, but Electric Forest kept finding to hang on despite drifting out some. “She broke really sharp, and that helped me a lot out of the one hole,” said Ortiz, who was celebrating his third win on the card, each with Chad Brown trainees. “With the track being speed-favoring, I wasn’t afraid to go out there (to the lead). She relaxed very good (down the backstretch), but we picked it up pretty good. When we passed the sixteenth pole, she made the lead and stayed there. The filly gave me another run.” War Story | Leslie Martin
