Bilko, M*A*S*H and the Heyday of U.S. Military Sitcoms (1955-75) Dennis Tredy 1 If the title of this paper quotes part of the refrain from Edwin Starr’s 1970 protest song, “War,” the song’s next line, proclaiming that war is good for “absolutely nothing” seems inaccurate, at least in terms of successful television sitcoms of from the 1950s to the 1970s. In fact, while Starr’s song was still an anti-Vietnam War battle cry, ground- breaking television programs like M*A*S*H (CBS, 1972-1983) were using laughter and tongue-in-cheek treatment of the horrors of war to provide a somewhat more palatable expression of the growing anti-war sentiment to American audiences. -

ROYALE THEATER, 242-250 West 45Th Street, Manhattan
Landmarks Preservation Commission December 15, 1987; Designation List 198 LP-1372 ROYALE THEATER, 242-250 West 45th Street, Manhattan. Built 1926-27; architect Herbert J. Krapp. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1016, Lot 55. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Royale Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 68). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-two witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indica ted that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Royale Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1926- 27, the Royale was among the half-dozen theaters constructed by the Chanin Organization in the mid-1920s, to the designs of Herbert J. Krapp, that typified the development of the Times Square/Broadway theater district. Founded by Irwin S. Chanin, the Chanin organization was a major cons true tion company in New York. During the 1920s, Chanin branched out into the building of theaters, and helped create much of the ambience of the heart of the theater district. -
The History of ABC's West Coast Television Studios Part 2 of 2 By
1 The History of ABC’s West Coast Television Studios Part 2 of 2 By Bobby Ellerbee and Eyes Of A Generation.com Preface and Acknowledgement This is the second part of a unique historical report on the creation of the broadcast facilities and studios used by The American Broadcasting Company. The first part of the story takes place in New York, and is covered in Part 1. This second part of the ABC studios story lays out the history of ABC’s growth on the West Coast and is about the Los Angeles studios. As ABC’s official historical archives are actually quite scarce, it took an extra deep dive to come up with some of the ultra-rare texts, photos, personal recollections and memoirs that are included in this report. For much of the network’s history, photos in the studios, except for a few rare publicity shots, were not permitted by anyone, so there will not be as many as in my NBC and CBS reports, but there will be some exceptionally interesting information presented here that only a handful of people have ever seen. As has been the case with my four prior historical reports on NBC New York, NBC West Coast and CBS New York, CBS West Coast, this effort would not have been possible without the help of many current and former ABC staffers from every area of the network and every era. I would like to offer my thanks to those dozens and dozens that helped, but especially veteran west coast cameramen Chuck Pharis, Jan Lowry, Don “Peaches” Langford, and ABC vets David Elliot, Galen Augustus and Brett Henry.
