A few years after Jahmose commissioned the cuboid during the 12th Dynasty, the inscription was altered on the right side with a column naming a person called Ta-ja. It was re-sculpted in the late 19th century, probably due to an accident or to make it more attractive for a potential buyer, but this falsified the upper part of the statue. After being sold at Sotheby’s in 1911 it was missing for over 100 years and was only known by the Hilton Price collection drawing, published by Prof. R. Schulz. In early 2017 it emerged from the German owner’s cellar, where it had been consigned for some time, to be offered to the gallery. After a bit of persuading, the gallery was able to negotiate a reasonable price with the owner, so that Prof. R. Schulz was able to secure it for the Römer-Pelizäus-Museum.

This capstone piece plays a central role in a story starting in 1968, involving a couple honeymooning in Egypt and an Eastern European archaeologist-cum-travel guide, who together acquire two Pyramidion sides in a licensed shop in Luxor, the couple and the guide each keeping one side after returning to Germany. Decades later, the different sides resurface and come back together – completing the entire Pyramidion – with the help of a German museum, an auction in southern Germany, the BAAF (Brussels Ancient Art Fair) in June 2017, a curator of the museum’s Egyptian department in Switzerland and the input of a generous benefactor. Now, 50 years later, the complete Pyramidion of Amun-Nakht is on display at the Antikenmuseum und Sammlung Ludwig in Basel. 16 Papyrus fragment 12th and last hour from the Book of Papyrus painted in black ink Egypt – New Kingdom, 20th-21th Dynasty, c. 1100-1000 BC Length: 58 cm Height: 24,5 cm Private collection England, prior to 1976 17 Sarkophagus mask Wood with original gesso-paint Egypt – Late New Kingdom/Third Intermediate Period, c. 1100 BC Height: 21,5 cm Private collection USA, prior to 1990 Fragment of the outer sarcophagus for Imen-n-Ipet Priestess of Amun Wood with original polychromy on both sides Length/Height: 59,5 cm Width: 28,3 cm Egypt (Thebes) – Third Intermediate Period, late 21st - early 22nd Dynasty, c. 1000-900 BC Private collection England, prior to 1996 18 19 22 Shabti for Pa-sen-Ousir Shabti for Osorkon II Blue faience with black inscription Fifth Pharaoh of the 21st Dynasty in Tanis Egypt – Third Intermediate Period, 21th Dynasty, c. 1069-945 BC Green faience with incised hieroglyphs and royal Height: 10,3 cm Egypt (Tanis) – Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty, c. 874-850 BC Private collection France, acquired 1990 Height: 14,5 cm Private collection France, prior to 1946

Rather crudely restored, it was rolled around a thick, old bamboo stick and kept in a chocolate box for decades. It had belonged to Gabriel Sempé, an athlete who had represented France in the 1924 and 1928 Olympics and has a street and square named after him in Tarbes. The wrapping was exhibited in 2016 during the exhibition “A l’école des scribes – Les écritures de l’Egypte ancienne” in Lattes, published several times and will be included in the upcoming Oxford dictionary as a near-complete version of the first 15 chapters of the and as being of superior quality than most linen wrappings of its time. Having purchased it, the gallery had it meticulously restored and exhibited it under glass. Then, in late 2017 another fragment appeared, which was reminiscent of the larger wrapping. After purchasing it, the gallery sent photographs of this fragment to the scholar who had published the larger wrapping in „Les étoffes pour l’éternité –Linceuls et bandelettes“, Montpellier 2014. She realized immediately that it was a piece of the following 17th chapter from the same wrapping. Both pieces are now reunited in the gallery and we are looking out for more.
