Twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen dominated the child star game in the late '80s and early to mid-'90s, first both appearing as baby Michelle Tanner on Full House before moving on to more starring roles in their own films, including Passport to Paris and When in Rome. If you're moving a plasma TV , never put the screen face down on the floor or the ground because this can hurt the unit. Happy that the coin fell heads-up? While the Olsen twins have taken a step out of the TV and film spotlight, they are now two of the most successful designers in the fashion industry. If you want to really up your game, you can create incredibly complicated spreadsheets for all kinds of decisions. • ORANGE and BLACK January/February 2016
Martinsburg High School ORANGE AND BLACK January/February 2016 The Blizzard of 2016 By Gillian Brown Berkeley County Students Enjoy Snow Days Winter storm Jonas gave students and teachers of Berkeley Country six missed school days this past week. Although the snow is now melting and will soon vanish, this historic storm will not be forgotten as it topped weather charts up and down the East Coast, with the most snow accumulation falling in our very own Eastern Panhandle with Glengary, West Virginia receiving 42 inches of snow and Shepherdstown, WV falling second on the charts with 40.5 inches of snow. Jonas was at the single biggest snowstorm on record for at least six locations on the East Coast, and was very close to breaking the record for the biggest snowstorm in the areas of New York City Central Park, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. This snowstorm topped the Blizzard of 1996, and also topped the February 2003 Presidents Day II snowstorm in some places. While the removal of the snow was a difficult task for the individuals involved, including the National Guard aiding the state of West Virginia when Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declared a State of Emergency, other individuals enjoyed the time off because of the snowfall and decided to have some fun in the snow. The big thing to do in the Blizzard of 2016, was to snow dive. One could accomplish this by wearing nothing but a swimsuit, some men wore speedos, and some diving goggles and then diving head first into the deepest snow a person could find.

SUCCESSSTORIES Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Entertainers with fashion, media and consumer product interests Bill Dallas’ candid case study of a company transformed by Dallas Capital OVERVIEW America fell in love with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen when the twins jointly played Michelle Tanner from 1987 to 1995 on the television program Full House. I have warm memories of the girls not simply from their TV escapades with the Tanner family of San Francisco but from their life with their real family, the Olsens of the San Fernando Valley. Their father, David Olsen, is my longtime colleague in the mortgage industry. Mary-Kate and Ashley’s popularity did not end with the final episode of Full House. They became the “Shirley Temples” of the 1990s with a delightful series of movies and media. The Olsen Twins emerged as a powerful brand, their imag- es and endorsements gracing a wide array of products, including hot-selling kids merchandise and clothing at Walmart. With the new millennium, Mary-Kate and Ashley grew into young women. This is the point when so many child stars collapse under poor choices in business and life. My good friend Dave was determined to protect to his beloved daughters from this all-too-common outcome. Dave asked me to take the financial reins of the Olsen Twins’ empire, to build last- ing security and success for Mary-Kate and Ashley. As a financial adviser, a CEO and most importantly, as a dad, I proudly accepted the position with one condi- tion. I would take no ownership positions and only a token management fee for this work.
