Taking Our Country Back: The New Left, Deaniacs, and the Production of Contemporary American Politics Daniel Kreiss, Ph.D. Candidate Department of Communication, Stanford University [email protected] ***The following is a draft, please do not cite or distribute without speaking to the author.*** Paper presented at Politics: Web 2.0: An International Conference, hosted by the New Political Communication Unit at Royal Holloway, University of London, April 17-18, 2008. Abstract This paper examines the evolution of ideas about participatory democracy and expressive politics and their articulation alongside new media with an eye towards revealing the historical antecedents of the 2003-2004 Howard Dean campaign. Through a comprehensive survey of documents produced by social movements, media artists, computer hobbyists, and the Dean campaign this paper presents the uptake of participatory theory and performative politics through networked tools and demonstrates how 1960s social and technical movements shaped the cultural meaning and practices of the Dean campaign. As the Internet and computing technology more generally became a repository for hopes of a renewal of democracy, the campaign was able to bring together a network of actors whose professional careers were located in the fields of politics and technology, and who in turn spawned a number of influential consulting firms and conferences which served as the mechanisms of diffusion for a particular form of electoral politics across the political field. Introduction Outside of a $500-a-plate fundraiser in 1968 in San Francisco for Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, Jerry Rubin and a group of self-described “freaks” greeted the entering guests with shouts of “Have a free bologna sandwich! Of the Pmore than 140 campaign managers we interviewed for this book, nearly all had lost elections—and many of them more than once. Even the most experienced and successful campaign manager can lose unexpectedly and even spectacularly. Consider the case of a campaign manager we will call “TW.” For three decades, he managed his candidate—his client and his best friend—rising from the New Yorkcopy, legislature, to the governor’s mansion, and on to the US Senate.2 Along the way, TW had worked for other candidates who were nominated for or won the presidency.3 TW’s skills as a campaign manager had earned him national renown and a very comfortable living. He was the undisputed American political notwizard behind the curtain. Now at the peak of his craft, TW was in Chicago at the Republican Party’s nominating convention. His client of thirty years was the front-runner to win the nomination. TW was so certain of the result that he had sent his candidate out of Do the country on a preconvention tour of European capitals. -

The Inter- Howard Dean: The Scream net, whose transformative potential has been predicted for years but Heard Around the World never fully realized, has finally become a powerhouse organizing tool page 7 for political activists. An Internet-centered campaign strategy enabled Howard Dean to CMD Celebrates 10 Years! emerge from nowhere and become a serious contender in the U.S. Democratic Primary. At the beginning of 2003, Dean had virtually no page 10 money and no name recognition outside his home state of Vermont. By the end of the year, his fundraising had not only outpaced his rivals Moving America One Step but had set new records for presidential primaries. More importantly, Forward And Two Steps Back the money was coming from sources that previously had not been able to participate meaningfully in campaign giving. Dean received 97 per- page 11 cent of his contributions from individual donors, with 61 percent coming from donors who gave $200 or less. Only 11 percent of Dean’s Atlas Economic Research money came from big-money donors who gave $2,000 or more. White In the past decade, Americans have rapidly embraced the Internet for a variety of uses. The proliferation of this new technology has changed the ways in which individuals interact with one another, and the ways in which they are organized to partake in political and/or otherwise public issues. It has also made it easier for citizens to become organizers themselves. As the Internet is a relatively new phenomenon in American culture, its implications for public engagement remain fairly unexplored. The ever-changing functions and demographic base of the Web require researchers to consider the most recent data and trends. In this thesis, I posit a conception of citizen participation called public engagement, which I situate in the context of Internet-use. -

The controversy has sparked discussions in a variety of media, including newspaper columns, Facebook groups and through Exclusive conversations both behind closed doors and in the proverbial public square. nationwide Amidst the conversation, however, people on both sides seem uninformed regarding the details of how coverage of SWAS actually comes to campus to perform. There presidential race are monetary, budgetary and political considerations involved in bringing such an event to William and Mary. To understand the student-administered budget Pages 6 and 7 process and its politics is to have a better understanding of how and why the show has been approved for a third consecutive year. The Board of Visitors approves all university funding, which includes the student affairs budget. Within that budget is a breakdown of student activities fees, which are mandatory. The fee is set by the student government; it was $86 this year. The purpose of this fee is to provide funding to nearly all the independent, student-run organizations which apply for it. There are some exceptions; no money can be approved for religious devotional or partisan political activities. -
