Caderno Ana Teresa Pereira.Qxd
Portuguese writers [ FICTION] Ana Teresa Pereira Ana Teresa Pereira was born in Funchal (Madeira island) in 1958. She went to Lisbon to study Philosophy but she didn't finish the course and returned to Funchal to dedicate herself exclusively to writing. She started in 1989 with a thriller and since then she has been publishing novels with impressive regularity. Her work is somehow atypical of the mainstream Portuguese literature, much of her inspiration coming from the Anglo-Saxon tradition. Her books are very cinematographic and are constantly appealing to her references in terms of paintings, films and literature - Iris Murdoch being one of her favourite writers ever. © JOÃO MIGUEL RODRIGUES Ô SYNOPSIS Byrne is a fifty-two year old Irishman. He returns to London to write a book about Iris Murdoch. His friend Ed finds him lodg- ings with Ashley, who is usually away. Byrne will fall in love with Ashley without ever meeting her - all he knows of her is what is left in the house - a picture on the wall, a book - everything is a pretext to imagine and invent the other. No.142, Winter 2006/2007
THE HIGH WYCOMBE SOCIETY MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS newsletter CHRISTMAS NUMBER 142 WINTER 2006/2007 Knowing Our Roots “DO WE want High Wycombe to be known for its shopping or do we want to be proud of our rich heritage?” That is the question posed by member Rub Suleman on page 11 of this issue. The answer, surely, is “both”. If our traders are to be prosperous and there are to be plenty of varied jobs for our young people, Eden must transform the High Wycombe shopping “experience” to keep and attract shoppers. However, knowledge of our heritage also has its part to play in raising our civic awareness. And, as Mr Suleman points out, young people, such as the growing numbers of students at our University College, are not born with this knowledge – they have to be told about it and it has to be pointed out to them. There are many aspects to this. Preserving our High Street and the wonderful variety of buildings in it is one. Treasuring our museum, with a constant series of fascinating exhibitions so enthusiastically managed by its dedicated staff is another. Striving to ensure the quality of new buildings in the town centre, whether it is the drama of Eden or simply new flats that do not clash with their immediate neighbours is also important. And how about questioning the need for the ever-growing plethora of traffic lights? Above all, our history must be cherished and even advertised. It is good to see that our mediaeval ruin, the St John’s Hospice, has at last been cleared of undergrowth. -

The Queen's Book
1 The Queen’s Book Neil Foster MacPhail nce upon a time in a lovely, quite respectable-sized village there lived a master teller of stories. In all of the kingdom, no one knew more about story telling than he did. He lived Owith his wife and three children in a modest-sized house with a large oak tree out front. (There were three children, because in fairy tales, there are often three of things. Three just works .) Now, the respectable-sized village lay to the east in a kingdom ruled by a kind and gentle, but not terribly observant old king who had a wicked queen for a wife. The wicked queen was said to have created a monstrous magic Book which had a ceaseless appetite for stories. The word bruited about the kingdom was that the queen’s monstrous Book would grow hungry, and the dark library would be filled with anguished groans and snarls from the Book, which would snap at anyone who drew near it. In fact most weeks, if the queen’s Book were not fed a well-written story that tasted like a finely aged wine, the people said it would try to eat whoever was nearby. Sometimes for months at a time, the library was closed to all until a brave storyteller could be found to be brought in to satiate the Book’s hunger. And so, people said, the queen advertised for determined storytellers to come, to risk being eaten by the Book. If the storytellers provided stories that were suitable to the Book’s taste in vintage tales, the people said that the Book devoured these approved stories and grew a story fatter in the eating. -
