WM2013 Conference, February 24 – 28, 2013, Phoenix, Arizona, USA Radon Concentration in Groundwater in the Central Region of Gyeongju, Korea - 13130 Jung Min Lee 1, A Rim Lee 1, Chan Hee Park 1, and Joo Hyun Moon 1* 1 Dongguk University, Seokjangdong, Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, 780-714, Republic of Korea ABSTRACT Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is a well known cause of lung cancer through inhalation. Nevertheless, stomach cancer can also occur if radon-containing water is ingested. This study measured the radon concentration in groundwater for drinking or other domestic uses in the central region of Gyeongju, Korea. The groundwater samples were taken from 11 points chosen from the 11 administrative districts in the central region of Gyeongju by selecting a point per district considering the demographic distribution including the number of tourists who visit the ancient ruins and archaeological sites. The mean radon concentrations in the groundwater samples ranged from 14.38 to 9050.73 Bq·m-3, which were below the recommendations by the U.S. EPA and WHO. Key words: Radon, naturally occurring radioactive gas, groundwater, Gyeongju INTRODUCTION Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is formed in the decay series of uranium and thorium. Since both these series are ubiquitous, radon gas is produced continually in all soils depending on the concentration of uranium or thorium. [1, 2] A portion of the radon released by radioactive decay moves through the air or water-filled pores in the soil to the soil surface and enters the air, whereas some remains below the surface and dissolves in the groundwater.

We applied the frequency ratio (FR), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF) methods to seismic data for Gyeongju, South Korea. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in Gyeongju on 12 September 2016. Buildings damaged during the earthquake were used as dependent variables, and 18 sub-indicators related to seismic vulnerability were used as independent variables. Seismic data were used to construct a model for each method, and the models’ results and prediction accuracies were validated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The success rates of the FR, DT, and RF models were 0.661, 0.899, and 1.000, and their prediction rates were 0.655, 0.851, and 0.949, respectively.

Radionuclides deposited in soil are transported by precipitation to nearby environments and contaminate the surface water system. Basic data on surface watershed and soil erosion models have been collected and analyzed to evaluate the behavior of radionuclides deposited on surface soil after a nuclear acci- dent. Data acquisition and analysis in aquatic environment were performed to investigate the physical characteristics and variation of biota in rivers and lakes of the Nakdong river area near the Wolsong nuclear power plant. For these purposes, a digital map, and hydrological, water quality and biota data were gathered and a systematic database (DB) was constructed in connection with them. Constructed aquatic DB will be supplied and used in surface watershed and soil erosion models for investigation of long-term movement of radionuclides in adsorptive form in surface soil. Finally, basic data and established models will be utilized for general radiological impact assessment in aquatic environment. We applied logistic regression (LR) and four kernel models based on the support vector machine (SVM) learning method to derive suitable models for assessing seismic vulnerabilities; the results of each model were then mapped and evaluated. Dependent variables were quantified using buildings damaged in the 9.12 Gyeongju Earthquake, and independent variables were constructed and used as spatial databases by selecting 15 sub-indicators related to earthquakes. Success and prediction rates were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The success rates of the models (LR, SVM models based on linear, polynomial, radial basis function, and sigmoid kernels) were 0.652, 0.649, 0.842, 0.998, and 0.630, respectively, and the prediction rates were 0.714, 0.651, 0.804, 0.919, and 0.629, respectively.

All species were selected from the final reports of the project: “Discovery of Korean Indigenous Species”. This project has been carried out to discover and record various Korean indigenous species since 2006 and is funded by the National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR). Among the various species, ciliates were a major taxon that was highlighted in this project as a speciose group categorized under Protozoa. This paper contains reports of 38 ciliates (8 classes, 16 orders, 23 families, and 34 genera) observed in Korea during the initial five years of the project (2006-2010).
