A. Rodríguez & A. O. Angulo Resumen Se analiza la situación taxonómica del género Scriptania Hampson, 1905. Usando el método de ANGULO & WEIGERT (1977), se obtuvieron las estructuras genitales para efectuar las descripciones y redescripciones de las especies del género Scriptania y la clave de separación para las especies del género. Se hace un análisis filo- genético sobre la base de caracteres morfológicos externos e internos (genitalia del macho y hembra) usando los programas informáticos computacionales Mc Clade 2.1, PAUP 3.0, PAUP 4.0B y Hennig 86, versión 1.5, para co- nocer la historia evolutiva de estas especies resultando Scriptania como un grupo monofilético basado en 14 sina- pomorfías. -

In addition, this species is a regulatory concern in the USA. In this work, we investigated the influence of trap design, trap height, and trap color on pheromone trap catches of C. decolora males in cruciferous crops. Additionally, we investigated the seasonal dynamics of C. decolara for 3 yr. The water-trap captured a significantly higher number of males compared to the jug trap and the Scentry® Heliothis trap. There were no significant differences between in the number of males captured by traps positioned at 0.5, 1, and 1.5 m above ground level. There was also no an interaction between trap design and trap height. Green water-traps captured more males than red water-traps, however, the catches of red water-traps were intermediate and not significantly different from those captured by yellow, blue, and brown water-traps. A total of 6,978 C. decolora males were captured during the 3 yr of trapping. The overall distribution of trap captures over the season was unimodal, with a distinctive peak in trap catches occurring between Mar and Apr. -

Psectrotarsia contains five species: P. flava Dognin (type species); P. su av is (H. Edwards), new combination; P. h e ba rd i (Skinner), new combination; P. euposis (Dyar), new combination and revised status; and P. rhodophora (Hampson), new combination. Each species is redescribed and illustrated. Copitarsia fuscir- ena (Hampson), new combination, and C. tamsi (Giacomelli), new combination, are transferred from Psectrotarsia to Copitarsia Hampson, 1906. Psectrotarsia ranges from the northeastern, midwestern, and southwestern United States to Guatemala. Key words: systematics, genitalia, new synonym, new combination, revised status, Erythroecia Introduction Psectrotarsia Dognin, 1907 was used first in combination with the type species, P. f la va Dognin, but a formal description of the genus was not provided. Hampson (1908) used Psectrotarsia in a key to the genera of Acro- nyctinae, but did not include species names (Poole, 1989). Hampson (1910) did not regard Psectrotarsia as formally described, and therefore, redescribed it and designated P. f us c ire n a Hampson as the type species; thus, he created both a junior synonym and homonym of Psectrotarsia Dognin. -

Sex pheromones of tropical insectsUNESCO that have been identified to– date EOLSS are mainly used for detection and population monitoring. Another strategy termed mating disruption, has been used in the control of the tomato pinworm, Keiferia lycopersicella, and the Guatemalan potato moth, Tecia solanivora. Research into other semiochemicals such as kairomones in tropical insects SAMPLErevealed evidence of their presence CHAPTERS in coleopterans. However, additional studies are necessary in order to confirm these laboratory results. In fruit flies, the isolation of potential attractants (kairomone) from Spondias mombin for Anastrepha obliqua was reported recently. The use of semiochemicals to control insect pests is advantageous in that it is safe for humans and the environment. The extensive use of these kinds of technologies could be very important in reducing the use of pesticides with the consequent reduction in the level of contamination caused by these products around the world. -

También se proponen nuevas combinaciones y sinónimos para algunas especies. We report chronological and physiological age-based survival curves for a potentially in- vasive noctuid, recently described as Copitarsia corruda Pogue & Simmons, collected from Peru and reared on asparagus at six constant temperatures between 9.7 and 34.5C. Copitarsia spp. are not known to occur in the United States but are routinely intercepted at ports of entry. Chronological age survival curves differ significantly among temperatures. Survivorship at early age after hatch is greatest at lower temperatures and declines as temperature increases. Mean longevity was 220 (+13 SEM) days at 9.7C. Physiological age survival curves constructed with developmental base temperature (7.2C) did not correspond to those constructed with a senescence base temperature (5.9C). A single degree day survival curve with an appropriate temperature threshold based on senescence adequately describes survivorship under non-stress temperature conditions (5.9–24.9C). -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Modification of behavioral response inCopitarsia decolora (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) due to pre-exposure to sex pheromone and host plant volatiles Norma Robledo1, René Arzuffi1, and Humberto Reyes-Prado2,* Abstract In this study we assessed the effect of pre-exposure to host sex pheromones and plant volatiles on the response of virgin males and mated females of Copitarsia decolora (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), by using glandular extracts of virgin females and host volatile extracts in bioassays conducted in a wind tunnel. Four-day-old insects, either virgin males pre-exposed to glandular extracts of the sex pheromone or mated females pre-exposed to host volatiles, were evaluated 2, 24, and 48 h after pre-exposure. In both sexes, pre-exposure and a subsequent attraction response at 2 h resulted in an inhibitory effect on the olfactory response. Recovery in the olfactory response was observed at 24 and 48 h; however, it took males a shorter activation time when compared with control insects. A brief pre-exposure of insects provoked a short-term (2 h) inhibition of the response to the olfactory stimulus. Consequently, as an integral part of strategies for the management of this pest species, the study of the ecological implications of such inhibition should be considered. The genus Copitarsia is considered as an economic and a quarantine pest attacking them. In herbivore insects, host plant choice is made by adults and influenced by host plant quality. There were performed olfactory and feeding tests by using four-arm olfactometer and offering four different aromatic herbs (basil, mint, rosemary, or thyme) to determine the host selection behavior of Copitarsia uncilata Burgos and Leiva. Parameters, such as adult choice, larval weight, and time spent by larva on particular herb were measured. The preferences of adults and immature of C. uncilata varied significantly among the herbs in olfactory and larva feeding tests. The adults showed significantly higher responses to essential oils of basil and rosemary. Higher weight of larva was recorded on mint and basil. Further studies on larval development and longevity of adults on different herbs are necessary. Key words: Quarantine pests, olfactory perception, aromatic herbs, pest ethology. CHAPTER 3 – AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT GEORGE WASHINGTON NATIONAL FOREST AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES SECTION D – FEDERAL OIL AND GAS LEASING AVAILABILITY INTRODUCTION This section of the Final EIS identifies George Washington National Forest lands that could be made available for oil and gas leasing, in accordance with the Mineral Leasing Act, under various leasing alternatives. It also describes the affected environment and discusses reasonably foreseeable impacts of oil and gas activities on the environment resulting from each leasing alternative. Oil and gas leasing is identified as a significant issue in Chapter 1 of the Final EIS. Issues and concerns expressed by the public and government agencies during the public comment period for this EIS have been addressed by the analysis. Additional discussion of specific concerns with gas development is in FEIS, Appendix I- Analysis of Concerns and Risks of Horizontal Drilling and Hydraulic Fracturing. Management of the federal leasable oil and gas resources is a shared responsibility between the Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Interior. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a major role in issuing and supervising operations on licenses, permits, and leases for federal leasable minerals. BLM cannot issue oil and gas leases for lands administered by the Forest Service without consent from the Secretary of Agriculture. As the agency responsible for federal oil and gas lease issuance and administration, the BLM participated in this EIS as a cooperating agency. This analysis will be used by both agencies as the basis for making oil and gas leasing decisions under their authorities. The responsible officials of the Forest Service and BLM may release separate Records of Decision.
