Share the melo- (205) dy, the back-up, and the fun making music together. Tune is easily accessible, note reading is VERY helpful! Katie Moritz Fri 10:00 Int FUN WITH 6/8 TIME Area 10 6/8 time is a compound time signature used in many styles of music, but most notably Jigs. Often times it's (119) tricky to get the right "feel" on the hammered dulcimer, and it's easy to fall out of time in this time signa- ture. The goal of this workshop is to show how certain hammering techniques can make this time signature easier to get the hang of and groove with. To practice this material, I will show you my favorite chord pro- gression, which has a few different types of chords, is super fun, and sounds really cool. Katie Moritz Thurs 11:00 All READING MUSIC ON HD Area 4 This workshop introduces note-reading to HD players who either have no experience reading music, OR who (24) are just not any good at it on the hammered dulcimer. I played exclusively by ear for years and the thought of reading sheet music was terrifying, but it's skill you can develop! I will show the basics of note reading and introduce some drills and cognitive tricks that will help bridge the gap between sheet music and ham- mered dulcimer. Katie Moritz Sat 10:00 Int/Adv STARTING TO IMPROVISE Area 7 If you're not a person who has ever improvised, just the thought of it can sound terrifying. I've been (215) there! However, improvising can be an absolute blast and it's a skill that can really bail you out if you get derailed while playing a tune. This workshop will be a friendly environment to get your feet wet. We will discuss, demonstrate and practice a number of techniques to get you started playing "off the cuff". Work- shop handout and online video support will be provided. Katie Moritz Fri 1:00 All UNDERSTANDING THE CIRCLE OF 5ths Area 4 (134) The circle of 5ths is a tool that is used universally by musicians of every kind. Hammered dulcimers players Sat 9:00 are fortunate to play an instrument that corresponds to this amazing tool in a very direct way. The goal of Area 7 (187) this workshop is to show HD players that correlation and help them to understand how they can use the Circle of 5ths to gain a deeper understanding of their instrument, and begin using the unique layout of the hammered dulcimer to their advantage. Sharon Thurs 11:00 All CAROL OF THE BELLS – A beautiful song played easily! O’Connell Area 10 (30)

By the time you get (246, 256) done with these two workshops you will have a solid understanding of two chord minor-key tunes and 3 cord major key tunes. It is not essential that you have taking the pentatonic scale workshop but it would be very helpful. Jim Rathbun Fri 2:00 Beg SO YOU BOUGHT A DULCIMER TODAY AND WANT TO PLAY TONIGHT? Area 7 (156) Are you brand new at Dulcimers or you had one under the bed for a year and want to know how it works? Whistle Chuck Thurs 2:00 Beg2/Int GETTING CONTROL OF THE WHISTLE Boody Area 3 (53) The whistle is deceptively easy to play…badly! Music will be provided for those who stay for the workshop along with a brief list of materials on the web that might be useful for whistle learners to know about. Reading useful, but not totally necessary. D whistle, D low whistle, or flute is necessary. Recorder players may come, but will find that many things will not apply to their instruments. On the list will be at least these: Finnish Polka, Gänglat fra Möckfjard, Janeen Mazurka, Johann Persnippen (schottishe). Reading skills will be useful, though those who learn by ear are welcome. Music will be provided, but you must stay to play it and not just come, grab the music and leave. Tana Sat 11:00 Beg/Int PATTERNS! PATTERNS! Denning Area 9 (227) Open to all melody players. Much of the traditional music we play is composed of simple patterns that are & often repeated within a tune and among different tunes. Learning to hear those patterns can make learning Chuck tunes much quicker and learning to play them can make playing tunes easier and better. The ability to hear Boody these patterns is part of why some folks pick up tunes so quickly. We'll examine a set of common patterns we've identified. Through playing and hearing them in tunes you may know we'll help you to become aware of them. Bring a tuned instrument so you can play along as we work our way through the patterns and dis- cover how things "lay" on your instrument. This is not about "licks" or "endings" or "tags" or "intros" or any of that - just patterns. Brett Fri 1:00 All CANOODLING YOUR NOODLE** Ridgeway Area 6 (136) It's time to quit relying on other peoples' musical compositions and, instead, simply learn to play the instru- ment right in front of you. In this workshop, you will understand how to play without relying on what is written on a musically-prescribed piece of paper! This is not a "tune" workshop, but takes learning much farther. In this workshop, you will learn to "mix it up" learning to improvise and embellish on the fly. If you play any tune ten times through, you will learn the techniques and skills to play it ten different ways, never having to play the tune the same way twice. This will change how you play and give you a new-found freedom and joy in your playing. Quit playing with your eyes, and start using your noodle!
