  • Family Business Succession Stories Collaboration Across Generations ⑤ Introduction to the Theme
FAMILY BUSINESS SUCCESSION STORIES COLLABORATION ACROSS GENERATIONS ⑤ INTRODUCTION TO THE THEME Growing up in a family business, family members are socialized into both the family and the business. In her PhD dissertation, Kajsa Haag [1] views succession as an ongoing practice in family businesses, a continuing flow of activities embedded in everyday life of business families rather than a moment where the ownership and leadership responsibility are passed on from one generation to the next. She suggests a shift in mindset from “taking over” to “being part” of a family business. Business owning families that identify with Kajsa Haag’s perspective on succession, will include and integrate the next generation in the family business, and collaboration across generations comes as a natural consequence. It is easier for enterprising families with ownership in operational companies and with family members fulfilling operational roles to include the next generation to be part of the family business, than it is for investment companies with possibly less tangible assets and brands connected to the family name. The next generation can be included from an early age, for instance, through family office visits. This can create an awareness of the family business with its products and/or services. In addition, such visits also establish emotional ties and a sense of pride. Family members could also be invited to company sites or on visits to suppliers or customers. This can be done as a family event, which strengthens the feeling of unity. Visits to suppliers or customers, also builds supply chain awareness. If suppliers or customers also are family owned, the visits become even more relevant.

SCOTTISH GENEALOGIST CUMULATIVE INDEX 1953 - 2005 Compiled by Dr. James D. Floyd John & Margaret Kinnaird D. Richard Torrance and Other unidentified members of the Society Copyright The Scottish Genealogy Society 2007 The Scottish Genealogy Society Library & Family History Centre 15 Victoria Terrace Edinburgh EH1 2JL Tel: 0131 220 3677 http://www.scotsgenealogy.com SCOTTISH GENEALOGIST Index Volumes 1-52 1953-2005 INTRODUCTION Over the existence of the Scottish Genealogy Society indexes to the Scottish Genealogist have been published at regular intervals and distributed to those who were members of the Society at the time of publication. The index to the first 28 volumes was one large index with no sub-divisions. As a great number of queries were published it was decided to include these in a section of their own from volume 29 onwards. From volume 41 the index was split into the following sections: General index; Article Titles; Contributors; Reviews; Work in Progress; Queries. A separate section for Illustrations was included in the index for volumes 45-52. NUMBERING There has not been uniformity in the numbering format used by the different compilers of the indexes. A volume covers one year during which 4 journals were issued usually in March, June, September and December. In the current index these have been harmonised to follow the most commonly used pattern: Volume number - Roman numerals capitals Journal number - Roman numerals lower case Page number - Arabic numerals Example: XXXIX.iv.116 -Volume 39, December issue, page 116. Page numbering Page numbering in the journals has not been consistent over the years.

The prize, co-founded by the Henokiens Association https://www.henokiens.com/ and the Château du Clos Lucé http://www.vinci-closluce.com/en, aims to promote family entrepreneurship as a model for dynamic and sustainable growth in keeping with the values of its founders. Christopher Thomson received the trophy from Lord Wilson of Dinton, former Head of the UK Civil Service, at London’s prestigious Two Temple Place venue. A prize-winner recognised for the values embodied by Leonardo da Vinci Following in the footsteps of past winners from France, Italy, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Austria, it is the turn of a UK family company to receive this highly respected prize. Faithful to its traditions and history, the Thomson family has passed down its expertise and its values from one generation to the next, just as Leonardo da Vinci transmitted his to his students. These are the five core values recognised in the winner of the prize: • History and tradition • Business and family • Loyalty and commitment • Memory and transmission • Innovation and modernity Innovation, modernity and tradition Faced, as all media companies are, with the digitalisation shift, DC Thomson continues to grow through diversification, acquiring radio, event and publishing businesses.

  • MUDIES of ANGUS in German to the German Settlers in Klemzig and Lectured on a Variety of Subjects
MUDIES OF ANGUS i MUDIES OF ANGUS THE MUDIES OF ANGUS by Sir Francis Mudie, K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E., O.B.E and Commander Ian M. N. Mudie, M.B.E., R.N. 1959 ii MUDIES OF ANGUS PREFACE MUDIE is one of the oldest of Lowland Scots names. In the thirteenth century, and probably earlier, it was spelt Modi and has been spelt in a great many ways since. Now there are, practically speaking, only two spellings, Mudie and Moodie. With only one exception that we have been able to find, all families of Angus origin use the former spelling and, again with only one exception, all those whose origin is outside Angus use the latter. Mudie is the older spelling, originating about the beginning of the sixteenth century. Moodie started to become common in the eighteenth and its adoption would appear to be the result of the increased contact with England which followed the Union of 1707. Nothing definite is known of the origin of the Mudies. Traditionally they are of Norse descent and this receives some confirmation from the fact that in early times they are found, almost exclusively, in those parts of Scotland raided by the Norsemen: in Angus along the coast from Dundee to Montrose: in Fife on the Forth near Dunfermline; on the Firth of Clyde below Glasgow and on the shores of the Pentland Firth. In Angus the Mudies early spread from the Sidlaw Hills, which seems to have been their original home, to the towns of Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, in which many of them attained considerable prominence in public life in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
