Francesco Patton, ofm, Custos of the Holy Land March 13, 2018 Your Beatitudes, Your Excellencies, Your Graces, We write today to express our fervent solidarity with you, your churches and the entire Christian community in the Holy Land as you face repeated challenges to the Status Quo that ensures a Christian presence in this most holy of places. We affirm your protest against the recent efforts to confiscate church lands or tax church properties whose function is integral to the churches’ mission. These efforts contravene the historic Status Quo that has prevailed in Jerusalem for centuries. We note with grave concern that the ability of a number of the churches to continue their important activities already has been impaired or even halted by tax liens against several of their bank accounts. These acts stifle the immediate work of the church as well as create a long-term situation that threatens the very existence of the Christian community in the Holy Land. We join you in advocating strongly against these proposals. We will continue to press the Israeli government on your behalf. We pledge to you our unwavering support for all peaceful and lawful measures you may undertake to ensure the preservation and flourishing of your communities both now and in the future. INFORMATION SERVICE Dossier – October, 2015 His All Holiness, Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch Biographical Profile Biography His All Holiness Archbishop Bartholomew I, was born Demetrios Archondonis, in 1940 on the island of Imvros (today, Gokceada, Turkey). He has worked tirelessly for the reconciliation among Christian Churches and acquired a prestige recognized internationally, in raising environmental awareness. He has worked persistently to advance reconciliation with the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, as well as with other confessions, through theological dialogues and personal encounters with respective leaders. As a member of the World Council of Churches, he has worked with the Executive and Central Committees and with the 'Faith and Order' Commission.Moreover, he has initiated numerous meetings and conversations with Muslim and Jewish leaders in an effort to promote mutual respect and religious tolerance globally. Background His All Holiness pursued his postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Oriental Institute of the Gregorian University in Rome, the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey (Switzerland) and at the University of Munich. He received his doctorate in Canon Law and was a founding member of the “Society for Justice for Eastern Churches.” In 1961 he was ordained deacon (and given the name Bartholomew) and in 1969 ordained a priest. He served as Assistant Dean of the Theological School of Halki (1968‐72) and was later appointed secretary to his predecessor, the Ecumenical Patriarch Demetrios (1972‐90). In 1973 he was consecrated bishop and named Metropolitan of Philadelphia (Asia Minor), until his enthronement in 1990 as Metropolitan of Chalcedon. On October 22, 1991 His All Holiness was unanimously elected Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch.

Archbishop O’Brien named head of Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Rome Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien of Baltimore as Pro- Grand Master of the Equestrian Order (Knights) of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, based in Rome. The appointment was announced simultaneously in Rome and in Washington, Aug. 29. “News of this appointment came as a shock to me and I am still adjusting to the reality that effective today I am no longer the Archbishop of Baltimore,” the archbishop said at an Aug. 29 news conference at the Catholic Center in Baltimore to discuss the appointment. “Until learning very recently of my appointment as grand master of the Holy Sepulcher, I was prepared and eager to serve out the remainder of my episcopacy as Archbishop of Baltimore, a title I have been honored to hold and a role in which I have been blessed to serve.” The order is a chivalric organization dedicated to promoting and defending Christianity in the Holy Land, supporting the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and responding to the needs of Catholics in the region. Its origins date back to the First Crusade. He succeeds in the post American Cardinal John P. Foley, who resigned and retired in February as head of the international order for health reasons. Cardinal Foley returned to Philadelphia to live permanently earlier this year after having served in Vatican posts since 1984. Though he ceases to be archbishop of Baltimore effective with the appointment, the pope named him as apostolic administrator of the archdiocese until his successor is named.

Statement on Retired Members Of
ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES, USA The Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio On Retired Members of the US Military The Archdiocese for the Military Services, as a particular Church, exists to support the spiritual and sacramental needs of the members of the armed forces and their families, the patients in the VA facilities, and US citizens working for the Federal Government overseas. All the faithful are welcomed. However, in order to serve well and in accordance with Church Law, it is useful to clarify the position of retired military members. While on active duty, Catholics have the option of joining either the Catholic Faith Community of the base chapel or that of the local civilian parish, regardless of their residence (on or off base). However, the choice is specific and should be clearly established upon arrival at each new duty station. They do remain, however, subjects of the military ordinariate. (The military archdiocese is legally competent under Canon Law to provide the following actions for its subjects: granting of permission for a mixed marriage, granting a dispensation from disparity of cult, granting a dispensation from canonical form, processing a declaration of nullity – either as a formal case or as a documentary case [lack of form]. With regards to these same persons, the military archbishop can grant his priest-chaplains the faculty to witness marriages validly and to confer Confirmation for an extraordinary reason 0 but only for the proper subjects of the military archdiocese.) After completion of twenty years of faithful service in the US military, retiring members and their dependents may continue to enjoy many of the benefits and services available to active duty members.

Cyril and Methodios, the Very Reverend Mother Ambrosia (left, below), Abbess of the Protection of the Mother of God Convent, in Bluffton, Alber- ta, Canada, was tonsured to the Great Schema by His Grace, Bishop Auxentios of Photike at the Convent of St. Elizabeth the Grand Duch- ess in Etna, California. Mother Elizabeth (below, right), Abbess of the Etna convent served as her sponsor. The tonsure was blessed by Bishop Cyprian of Oreoi, Acting President of the Holy Synod, and Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna. Mother Ambrosia, a spiritual daughter of both Bishop Sava of Ed- monton and Bishop Nektary of Seattle, entered the monastic life at the Convent of Our Lady of Kazan, in Kentlyn, New South Wales, Austral- ia, having been tonsured—along with her mother according to the flesh, Mother Theodora—a Rasophore Nun by the ruling Bishop in Australia, Archbishop Paul of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA). She was later assigned to the Convent in Bluffton (accompanied by Moth- er Theodora), where she was made Superior and tonsured to the Small Schema in 1993, by the late Metropolitan Vitaly. In 2002, she was ele- vated to the office of Abbess by Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco. After the union of the ROCA with the Moscow Patriarchate, Mother Ambrosia and her six nuns, being unable in good conscience to accept what they saw as an abandonment of the historical principles of the Rus- sian Church Abroad, petitioned to be received into the American Exar- chate of our Church.
