The South American nymphalid Bia Hübner, 1819, treated for over 150 years by most lepidopterists as a member of the Satyrinae, has been shown by recent work on early stages and DNA to share characters with the Morph- inae: Brassolini. Examination of the wing patterns and androconial organs of Bia, described in detail for the first time, reveals unusual features otherwise only known from brassolines. In particular, the tufted posterior androconial organ of the hindwing forming palisades is a synapomorphy for Bia and several genera of Brassolini, including Caligo. The ge- nus Bia is formally transferred from the Satyrinae to the Morphinae: Brassolini as the sole member of the subtribe Biina Herrich-Schäffer, 1864, stat. nov., co-ordinate with Brassolina Boisduval, 1836, and Naropina Stichel, 1925. Biota Neotrop. 13(3): http://www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v13n3/en/abstract?article+bn03613032013 Abstract: This study describes and compares the diverse dorsal and ventral wing color patterns of Brassolini butterflies. Thirty-three species are illustrated, where pattern elements of the nymphalid ground plan are labeled in color. In general, a larger number of pattern elements can be identified on the ventral than on the dorsal surface of both wings, and the forewing has a larger number of discernible pattern elements than the hind wing. The dorsal elements are broad, diffuse, and more difficult to identify against the typically brown brassoline wing background color. Species with a light colored dorsal background served as a guide for our proposal that fewer pattern elements are present dorsally, particularly on the hind wing. -

Samples were carried out for more than four years with entomological nets and bait traps techniques in areas of Subtropical Atlantic Forest (SAF) and Araucaria Moist Forest (AMF). Seventy-six butterfly species were recorded in this region of Atlantic Forest, 60 species for SAF and 53 for AMF. Fruit-feeding butterflies represent about 50% of the total species richness of the Nymphalidae recorded for the region, a value of the same order of those found for similar studies in tropical forests regions. Casagrande Abstract Butterfly species lists are commonly published aiming to describe local or regional diversity, thus being primordial tools for subsiding nature preservation and management. However, tropical lands usually lack this kind of information. Inventories of megadiverse organisms, such as butterflies, usually require long term studies to detect a substantial fraction of species present in certain location. Through biological collections in scientific institutions it is possible to preserve a considerate amount of biodiversity information, which is not available in the literature, but can promote studies over time.
