No. 2782 By Mr. Madden of Nantucket, a petition (accompanied by bill, House, No. 2782) of Timothy R. Madden and others for legislation to designate the month of October as Farm to School Month in the Commonwealth and to strategize opportunities to spread farm-to-school programs statewide. State Administration and Regulatory Oversight. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts _______________ In the One Hundred and Eighty-Ninth General Court (2015-2016) _______________ An Act establishing Massachusetts Farm-to-School Month and commending farm-to-school programs. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1 SECTION 1. Chapter 6 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 2 15XXXXX, inserted by chapter 344 of the acts of 2014, the following section:— 3 Section 15YYYYY. The governor shall annually issue a proclamation setting apart the 4 month of October as Massachusetts Farm-to-School Month in recognition of the vital role 5 agriculture plays in the culture, heritage and economy of the commonwealth, and to commend 6 the farm-to-school programs which support improved nutrition and academic achievement 7 among the student population and represent potential markets for local farmers, growers, and 8 food producers in school settings; and recommending that the month be observed in an 9 appropriate manner by the people. 10 SECTION 2. The department of elementary and secondary education, the department of 11 agricultural resources, and the department of public health are encouraged to initiate a joint 1 of 2 12 taskforce in collaboration with the Massachusetts Farm-to-School Project to strategize 13 opportunities to spread farm-to-school programs statewide. 2 of 2.
