PREGAME NOTES 2019 TIM HORTONS NHL HERITAGE CLASSIC WINNIPEG JETS vs. CALGARY FLAMES MOSAIC STADIUM, REGINA, SASK. – OCT. 26, 2019 JETS, FLAMES FACE OFF OUTDOORS The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames face off tonight in the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic (10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CST, CBC, SN1, CITY, TVAS2, NBCSN) – the League’s 28th regular-season outdoor game and fifth in the Heritage Classic series. The Jets and Flames each have participated in one prior outdoor game, both under the Heritage Classic umbrella. Winnipeg played host to the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field, falling 3-0 to the Edmonton Oilers. Nine Jets players who appeared in that game remain with the team: Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, Connor Hellebuyck, Patrik Laine, Adam Lowry, Josh Morrissey, Mathieu Perreault, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Current Calgary goaltender Cam Talbot started for Edmonton in that contest, stopping all 31 shots he faced for the third shutout in outdoor NHL game history. Current Jets forward Mark Letestu scored the winning goal (while shorthanded), as a member of the Oilers. And current Flames forward Milan Lucic recorded two penalty minutes for Edmonton. Calgary served as hosts for the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0. Two players who appeared in that game remain with the Flames: Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano. Overall, the Jets feature 11 players who have participated in a prior outdoor NHL game (minimum: 1 GP in 2019-20), while the Flames have four. Talbot leads that group with four such appearances, though he served as a backup goaltender for three of them (2014 SS w/ NYR [2 GP], 2019 SS w/ PHI).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JUNE 16, 2021 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS ANNOUNCE PROMOTIONS, CHANGES WITHIN CLUB’S HOCKEY OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT Rick Nash, Josef Boumedienne promoted; former Jackets Derek Dorsett, Mark Letestu named development coaches COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager and Associate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced several changes to the club’s hockey operations department today. Rick Nash has been promoted to director of player development and Josef Boumedienne has been promoted to director of pro scouting, while former Blue Jackets Derek Dorsett and Mark Letestu have been named development coaches. In addition, Brad Thiessen has replaced Jim Corsi as goaltending development coach and Nelson Ayotte has retired after five seasons with the club, including the past four as director of high performance. “We are always looking to strengthen our hockey operations group and these moves do just that, particularly in the area of player development,” said Kekalainen. “In Rick, Derek, Mark and Brad, we have four former players with a combined 34 years of experience in the NHL and 17 in the AHL, as well as having played major junior and college, so they will be able to share a wealth of knowledge and experience with prospects throughout our organization. They are also passionate about the Blue Jackets, our city and what we are building here.” Nash, 37, will supervise the club’s development coaches, oversee the progress of prospects throughout the organization and provide feedback to management on player advancement. He spent the past two years with the Blue Jackets as a special assistant to the general manager following a decorated 15-year playing career.

  • Trio Has Super Time in Minneapolis on Super Sunday
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/trio-has-super-time-in-minneapolis-on- super-sunday-472850603.html Trio has super time in Minneapolis on Super Sunday By: Mike McIntyre Three members of the Winnipeg Jets had a truly super Sunday. Mark Scheifele, Andrew Copp and Jacob Trouba took advantage of an off-day and made the quick trip to Minneapolis to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII. "Unbelievable," Scheifele said Monday following practice. "Obviously lucky that it was in Minnesota, we had a day off. I surprised my brother and my best friend with their Christmas gifts — they got to come to the Super Bowl. And then Copper and Troubs came, too. It’s definitely something to cross off the bucket list and something that I’ll never forget." They took an early morning flight, soaked up the atmosphere before and during the game, and then caught a late-night flight home. Copp, a former high school quarterback in Michigan, said it was a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" and marvelled at getting to watch New England quarterback Tom Brady in action — even if it was in a losing effort. "It was a crazy game. There wasn’t much more Tom could have done — maybe catch the ball — but he was unbelievable," Copp said. "I turned to (Trouba) a few times and it was just like, ‘Wow, he’s playing one of the best games of his career, probably.’ And then (Philadelphia quarterback Nick) Foles made some great throws, too, so it was definitely an entertaining back- and-forth game." Copp and Scheifele didn’t hide their rooting interests, sporting Brady jerseys.

  • Jets Triumph, but at What Cost? Scheifele Leaves Game in Second Period After Crashing Into Boards
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/jets-snap-oilers-streak-in-old-school- battle-of-the-offensive-lines-466897883.html Jets triumph, but at what cost? Scheifele leaves game in second period after crashing into boards By: Mike McIntyre There was no Gretzky or Hawerchuk. No Kurri or Selanne. No Coffey or Housley. None of that mattered Wednesday as the modern-day stars of the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers traded chances for much of the night in a wide-open game that resembled some of their classic Smythe Division battles of old — where defence and goaltending often took a backseat to high-octane offence. When the final buzzer went at Bell MTS Place, it was the Jets who outlasted the Oilers by a 4-3 score that certainly could have been much higher on both ends if not for some bad puck luck. Winnipeg improves to 21-11-6 on the year, while Edmonton has their four-game win streak snapped and fall to 17-18-2. "That’s why I love the game. It’s exciting," goalie Connor Hellebuyck said of the victory, which included surviving a frantic last-minute barrage by the Oilers in which they did everything but tie the game. However, the thrill of victory was certainly muted by what appears to be a serious shoulder injury suffered by Jets centre Mark Scheifele. He crashed hard into the boards early in the second period and was in obvious pain, heading straight to the dressing room. He did not return and more will be known about his status today.

  • A Whiteout Backfire: Scalpers Sell Free Tickets for Winnipeg Jets Street Party
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/a-whiteout-backfire-scalpers-sell-free- tickets-for-winnipeg-jets-street-party-482428883.html A Whiteout backfire: Scalpers sell free tickets for Winnipeg Jets street party By: Bill Redekop A new system to track attendance at Whiteout street parties during Winnipeg Jets playoff games could backfire and result in smaller crowds. Organizers announced a new policy Friday requiring attendees to obtain a free ticket in advance. The ticket must be downloaded from Ticketmaster to a smartphone, printed from a computer or obtained at the Bell MTS Place box office. The ticket process was announced as a way organizers could know how many people to expect, so they could provide services such as policing and portable toilets. However, all 25,000 tickets for today’s party were gone in less than an hour, and tickets for Monday’s party were gone by mid-afternoon Friday. The highest attendance for a street party so far was 20,000 last Tuesday for Game 6 against Nashville. That’s led to suspicions that the commitment of some people obtaining tickets is soft and that they obtained the free tickets more as insurance should they feel like going. As well, with the rush to obtain tickets online, people were almost forced to scoop up tickets immediately before they had time to consult with friends and family. "I assumed that this was going to happen. They sell out immediately because people get them in case they decide to go," Jets fan Chris Cymbalisty said. The free tickets started to show up almost immediately on buy-and-sell website Kijiji — for a price.

  • What Do Hockey Fans Want to See?
Robert Poss Professor Samanta ECO 495 Spring 2012 Goals Galore vs. Bounteous Blood: What Do Hockey Fans Want to See? Abstract – NHL attendance has been growing throughout the past decade. In this note we attempt to disentangle the rationale behind this phenomenon. We examine the rule changes that have increased scoring while also testing for the effect of violence on attendance. We hypothesize that fans enjoy both the goal scoring nature of the game as well as the brutish, violent facets of it. However, it seems that a team’s success measured by their points and goals scored have a significant effect on attendance whereas violence does not. Interestingly enough, the sign for violence is negative, giving evidence to the refutation of previous studies’ claims. Introduction “I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out.” -Rodney Dangerfield "High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing...everything else is just figure skating." -Author Unknown The National Hockey League comprises one of the four major sports in the United States along with the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association. Of these four sports, the NHL possesses perhaps the most unique mix between violence and finesse, where padded gladiators exchange haymakers one moment and only seconds later involve themselves in a beautiful display of skating prowess and hand-eye coordination. Many studies cite hockey as the only sport which tolerates fighting as "part of the game". It is conceivably for this reason that fans of the NHL tend to be some of the most crazed and passionate fans in America.
