    President of the Missionary Union of the Clergy Bshop Conforti's concern for the Church entrusted to him never distracted him from the “concern for those parts of the world where the Word of God had not yet been proclaimed.” He was convinced that the proclamation of the Gospel “ad gentes” (to the nations), was the most effective way of re-evangelizing his own people. He was untiring, therefore, in his commitment to mission evangelization and promotion, both through the work of his own missionary family, as well as supporting every missionary animation initiative in Italy and throughout the world. He was particularly committed to assisting in the foundation and spreading of the Pontifical Missionary Union of the Clergy of which he was the first president. In fact, in 1916 Guido Conforti got together with Fr Paolo Manna of the Pontifical Institute of Milan Missionary Society. The idea was to mobilize priests around the world to reawaken their awareness of having been ordained for the whole world and encourage them to heighten their people's commitment to spreading the Gospel. It was to be another legacy to the mission of the Church. The Bishop of Parma was almost like a magnet to those who felt the urgency of missionary formation of the people of God. The missionary heart of Fr. Manna, founder of PIME missionaries, had the intuition that only through the personal conversion of priests and bishops to the universal mission of the church, he could hope for a missionary re-launching. Bishop Conforti joined wholeheartedly the Missionary Union of the Clergy and helped organize and attended Mission Congresses throughout Italy: in Bergamo (1919, 1923), Rome (1920), Naples (1922), Modena (1923), and in particular in Palermo (1924) when he gave the key-note address on “The Eucharist and the Missions.” When Conforti retired from the Missionary Union of Clergy in 1927 as its first national president, the association was present in 44 Italian dioceses alone.

About this Life Night This life night is designed to be used during the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019, however, it can be used before or after the month as any time of the year is an appropriate time for reflection on the missionary dimension of the Church. In recognition of the 100th year anniversary of Pope Benedict XV’s Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud, Pope Francis has convoked an Extraordinary Missionary Month dedicated to the Church’s mission, in particular the mission ad gentes (to the nations). The theme of the month is “Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.” This month is being planned by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (CEP) and the Pontifical Mission Societies. The CEP is tasked with directing the evangelization and missionary efforts of the Church. The Pontifical Mission Societies, contained within the CEP, are a worldwide network at the service of the Holy Father to sustain the mission and the young Churches through prayer and charity. In terms of missionary cooperation, they are to be given “pride of place, since they are the means of imbuing Catholics from their very infancy with a real universal and missionary outlook; and they are also the means of making an effective collection of funds to subsidize all missions, each according to its needs” (Ad Gentes, 38).

After the death of her mother on August 28, 1877, Thérèse moved with her family to the city of Lisieux. Some extraordinary graces accompanied Thérèse’s human and spiritual maturation and allowed her to grow in her awareness of the infinite Mercy of God that is offered to every person. On the day of Pentecost in 1883, she had the unique grace of being healed from a serious illness; through the intercession of Our Lady of Victories. In 1884, she received her First Communion and at that time experienced the grace of intimate union with Christ. Thérèse had a great desire to follow her sisters, Pauline and Marie, into the Carmel of Lisieux to live a contemplative life. While on a pilgrimage to Italy, during an audience that Pope Leo XIII granted to the faithful of the Diocese of Lisieux, she boldly implored the Holy Father to obtain permission to enter Carmel at the age of fifteen. Having obtained his permission, Thérèse entered the monastery in 1888 and professed her vows on September 8, 1890. Her journey of holiness was strengthened by trusting God during mo- ments of great trial, to which she gave witness in her writings, letters, and prayers.

    BOUNDED MISSIONARY FAMILIES Collaboration among Institutes inspired by PIME missionaries Introduction The idea of a reunion of the Institutes and ecclesial realities founded or inspired by some of PIME’s missionaries came during a meeting in August 2017 between the PIME Directorate General and the Directorate General of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate. The objective of this reunion is twofold: the first reason is to strengthen, in the spirit of the PIME Family, the relationship that began many years ago through some of our PIME missionaries. As time went on, in recent years this relationship has weakened between us as each of our entities took different paths, and contact decreased; the second reason is to know more about us so that each one of these realities linked to PIME and its Spirituality, albeit expressed in different ways, can pray for all the other entities that make up a real spirit of Family. On February 2019, we finally got to meet personally and we shared our ideas on Mission and saw if there is any possibility for collaboration. On October 2019, it was then agreed that this working group would be called “BMF - Bounded Missionary Families, Collaboration among Institutes inspired by PIME missionaries”. This booklet contains the directories of the Institutes and ecclesial realities founded or inspired by some of our PIME missionaries and it is a first step to better know each other on the long road towards a bigger cooperation between our entities.     BLESSED PAOLO MANNA (1872-1952) n Father Paolo Manna, we see a special reflection of the glory of God. “IHe spent his entire life for the missionary cause. On every page of his writings the person of Jesus emerges as alive, the center of life and the raison d’être of mission.” These words of St. John Paul II, spoken during his homily for the beat- ification of Father Manna on November 4, 2001, summarize the spiritual portrait of this great apostle of evangelization ad gentes, considered by schol- ars to be a precursor of the Second Vatican Council. Paolo Antonio Manna was born in Avellino, Italy, on January 16, 1872, the fifth of six children. After elementary and technical studies in Avellino and Naples, he continued his studies in Rome. While studying philosophy at the Gregorian University, he heard the Lord’s call to missionary life and entered the seminary of the Institute for Foreign Missions in Milan, where he completed his theological studies. He was ordained a priest in the cathe- dral of Milan on May 19, 1894. His superiors sent him to Burma (now Myanmar) and on September 27, 1895, he left, for the Toungoo mission. Although suffering from poor health, he pushed himself with tireless dedication in the evangelization1 and human development of the Carian peoples (in particular the Ghekhù, about whom he later wrote a well-noted book). Exhaustion from his travels, malarial fever, and the onset of tuberculosis forced him to return home on July 7, 1907. 1 Father Manna even evangelized the parents of the first beatified native of Burma (now Myanmar), Isidoro Ngei Ko Lat, a catechist who was martyred together with Fr.
