SEMI FINALIST - B4, B6 & C2 Team

RUNNERS UP - A2, B2, B3 & 16C Team

MINOR PREMIERS - B2, 10A, 14A & 16A (Blue) Team

PREMIERS - C1, 10A, 14A & 16A (Blue) Team 4 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to submit my first report as President of Engadine Dragons. Some highlights for the season include: -

• Seven out of seven senior teams making the semi finals and four making the finals (A2, B2, B3 & C1). • Competed in four junior finals (10A, 14A, 16A & 16C). • Running a close 2nd in the Junior Club Championship • Expansion of our Clubhouse facility that now includes a meeting area • Fielding three U8’s and three U10’s teams • Sponsorship of our teams continues to grow

Congratulations to our 10A, 14A, 16A & C1 teams for being crowned premiers for 2006-07 with commiserations to the 16C, A2, B2 & B3 for having a great year only to be pipped at the post. Our under 8’s & under 10’s, who are our future of this mighty club, impressed both spectators and officials with the way they improved their cricket throughout the year. To our other teams your achievements did not go unnoticed and are acknowledged in your end of year reports. Well done.

As this year was the first for both the President and the Secretary, I would like to acknowledge the support and friendship shown to us by our fellow committee members. Your support and guidance has allowed us to steer our club in the right direction, which might I say is the envy of a lot of the other cricket clubs in the shire.

The year would not be complete without acknowledging our army of volunteers. To our Coaches, Managers and Scorers we say a big thank you for your tireless efforts throughout the year. Our committee members have taken on their individual roles magnificently and combined to ensure our players have had the opportunity to shine on the field.

Thank you to the parents and supporters who were well represented at out fundraising activities for the year. Ken Newman hosted our annual Trivia Night held at Engadine RSL and from all reports everyone took something away with them on the night. Bob Price was the catalyst behind our fundraising raffle and it was nice to see the winning ticket being sold by our top seller Bill Knowles.

Our sponsors provide valuable assistance in maintaining the services that we provide at a reasonable cost. So when you are next looking for that special item or service, be sure to look up our sponsor and tell them you are from the Dragons Cricket Club.

Dennis Pendergast completed a rare coaching feat this year. He started with a bunch of boys in the under 10a’s way back in 2000 and every second year won an “A Grade” premiership culminating in the ultimate prize of the 16A title this year. What a feat!! Russ Waddell continues to support our club even years after retiring from our committee. Each year he hosts both our awards nights and does a sterling job for which we are indebted to you. Bob Price each fortnight plays editor for our newsletter and on top of this found time to organise our end of year celebrations after the finals. Thank you Bob. Peter Ward our Assistant Secretary Juniors has completed eight years in this role and his dedication is very commendable. This year he assisted Craig Rice in ensuring our club moved from a paper based results system to a web based online reporting system with the junior association acknowledging their efforts. A day does not go by in the Summer without seeing our stalwart Harry Robbins coaching and providing that elusive tip to a young gun in the nets. Your efforts provide the foundations for the success of this club and we all say a big thank you.

The success of our club is not just about winning premierships. I like to monitor the return of players backing up for another season, and the pathway of our juniors to senior cricket as a part barometer of our success. We will continue to work on both of these in years to come. For the players that are leaving us to further your cricketing careers with our grade partners, we wish you every success for the future.

It is hoped that you enjoy your off season, and look forward to catching up with everyone in 2007/8.

Steve Jones

5 SECRETARY’S REPORT

This is my first year as Secretary of the Engadine Dragons. It has been a steep learning curve to be across all the aspects of this dynamic club. I would like to thank and recognize the great support received from my fellow committee members, coaches and managers throughout the year. As outlined by our President, the 2006/07 year has been very successful on the field and I would like to congratulate all players for the way they have conducted themselves and represented their club and association throughout the year. We ended up coming a very close second in the Junior Club Championship and to have all senior teams participate in the final series was an outstanding achievement, which shows the depth we have throughout the club. It was great to see the junior player numbers increase to 153 this season and we look forward to continued growth in the years to come. With the improved numbers in our U8s and U10s the future of the club is assured. Thanks to all the volunteers throughout the year. Your assistance is invaluable in the running of any club and I know the players really appreciate the efforts that you put in. Off the field has also been very important to the future of the club: • The ongoing support of our sponsors and advertisers is highly valued as it enables us to keep the playing costs down and provide improved facilities for all players • Your support of our annual raffle and trivia night has again been very positive • The extension to our club rooms in the ANZAC Oval complex provides us with some of the best cricket facilities in the Shire. We acknowledge the financial grant provided by the NSW Sport and Recreation Department to assist with this project • We have been successful in receiving $3000 from the Volunteer Small Equipment Grant from the Federal Government, which will assist with some new purchases for next season • The end of finals functions for Senior and Junior Teams were well supported and showed a lot of the Dragon’s club spirit • Plans are in place to upgrade and extend the outdoor nets at ANZAC oval for the next season I look forward to your return for the 2007/08 season. Only 8 weeks to go for registrations for next season….. Craig Rice “TRIBUTE BOX”

Throughout this Yearbook you will see “TRIBUTE” Boxes signifying a job well done. We ask you to note these businesses and people for the invaluable contributions they have made to our club.

TREASURER’S REPORT Firstly, I’d like to congratulate all the junior players for another successful year on the field where we had 3 minor premiers and premiers and 1 runner up. As for the seniors all 7 teams made the semis. This was a fantastic result, with 4 progressing to the final and 1 winning the premiership. In my second year as treasurer, we now have a full year of our finances after changing the closure of the accounts to 31st March last year. This provides a more up to date position of the club’s finances and will now provide a comparable annual profit/loss position going forward. During the year the club made an operating loss of $598.27, however we saw the extension of our clubroom at a cost of around $13,000. We also received a government grant of a little over $4,000 to help fund this extension. A big thanks to all those who contributed to the extension of the room and also the submission of the successful grant. 7

Highlights include; • Cash balances of $16,538.88, after allowing for the estimated cost of the presentations (around $5,000), is expected to be once again over $11,000, a fantastic result. We still maintain our term deposit at a little over $7,000. • Advertising/Sponsorship for the year was a little under $10,000. To all those who contributed, a big thanks, this helps in reducing registration fees and makes it more affordable for the average player. • The trivia night raised around $3,500, another fantastic result. Thanks to all those who contributed prizes and those who attended. It was a most enjoyable and successful night. • Our club raffle raised over $3,600, which I understand is the best ever, again thanks to those who supported this. • Once again all junior players received a new playing shirt. This is the second consecutive year the club has managed to achieve enough sponsorship to make this happen.

Finally, thanks to all those who contributed in some way to making this a great club, whether its sponsors/advertisers, committee, coaches/managers, players or parents. Everyone plays some part towards the success of the club, whether it’s on the playing field or financially.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IAN LATHAM HUGHES COMMUNITY AWARD Congratulations to our Life Member Ian Latham who has been awarded the “Hughes Community Award” for his services to Engadine Dragons Cricket Club. Ian’s award was presented by Danna Vale, Federal Member for Hughes on February 18th at Club Menai. Mrs Vale said “On behalf of our local community, I thank the above recipients for their personal commitment and active citizenship.” Ian is a tireless worker for our Club and we are very proud of his achievement. Ian joins fellow Life Members in Harry Robbins, Russ Waddell, Val Tever and Bob Price as past recipients of this prestigious award.

BRADMAN CHALLENGE MATCH REPORT Bowral April 21, 2007 The 2nd Annual Bradman Challenge Match was played at Bradman Oval, Bowral, on 21st April and was a tremendous success. Since its inception just last year the match has quickly become a major event on the Dragon’s calendar, as evidenced by the outstanding support it received this year. The match is played by two teams of Dragon’s juniors, primarily Under 16s, with priority given to those players in their second year. As such, it represents a unique opportunity for many of these players to play on a ground with the status and quality of Bradman Oval and is a marvellous way for them to finish their junior cricket careers with the Dragons. The teams are carefully selected by the coaches and captains to ensure an even mix of ability and the match is played using an averages format, which ensures all players have equal involvement with both bat and ball. This year’s match was played in perfect weather conditions and was attended by a large crowd of family and club members, with many staying overnight and having a most enjoyable and sociable time. “Marciante’s Maulers”, captained by Ben Marciante and coached by Harry Robbins, were victorious over “Ward’s Warriors”, captained by Daniel Ward and coached by Dennis Pendergast. The match was keenly contested and played in great club spirit, with plenty of runs scored, taken, no shortage of banter and, most importantly, a lot of laughter and fun had by all. Congratulations to all players for the way they played the game and particularly to Jason Gilmore and Dean McMillan who were players of the match. Many thanks to; Ben, Harry, Daniel and Dennis for their efforts in organising and running the teams, Steve Chapman and Paul Bremner for umpiring, Ian Latham for his organisation, Ken Newman our ‘official photographer’ and all the parents and supporters who assisted on the day with scoring, afternoon tea and supporting the players and the club. It is events such as this which demonstrate the wonderful club we have and will no doubt be something our junior players can look forward to for many years to come. 8 PERPETUAL TROPHIES AND AWARDS CRITERIA 2006/2007 SEASON Note: • The Management Committee reserves the right to withhold the allocation of any award where in its assessment the criteria have not been met or for any other valid reason. • Where the assessment of the award calls for nominations, all such nominations must be in writing, with reasons in support. Nominations must be forwarded to be in the hands of the Secretary or Assistant Secretary by no later than two weeks after the date of the final last played or any other such date as the Committee may announce or publish. • In the absence of nominations the Management Committee shall consider the merits of each award and may determine a recipient on its knowledge of the available candidates. • The Management Committee may make any special award it sees fit to acknowledge special circumstances or to provide encouragement. • All considerations of the Management Committee and/or the Executive are confidential. Neither body shall be required to give reasons for the acceptance or rejection of any nomination.

GENERAL CRITERIA:

To provide a measure of objectivity and consistency throughout all levels of the Club for the determination of performance awards, the following criteria shall apply uniformly: Where a bowler is competing with a batsman and/or keeper for a Club honour, the following system shall apply:

• For each 10 runs scored: - 1 point • For each wicket taken: - 1 point • For each catch/stumping made: - 1 point

Where two batsmen or two bowlers are vying for an honour/award the Management Committee will take into account the ratio of runs to innings, and/or wickets to overs noting the strike and economy rates and in each instance make judgment based on its assessment of all circumstances. The above may also be used for determining “All-rounders” but with respect to the junior, intermediate and senior divisions it is to be read in conjunction with the criteria specified.

INDIVIDUAL TEAM AWARDS: (Personal Trophies)

Junior and Intermediate Divisions: For all junior and intermediate teams engaged in SSJCA competition cricket there will be four awards presented. One for batting and one for bowling plus two others to be nominated by the Team Management (Coach and Manager). The Coach and Manager may recommend two awards from the following four categories; - Most Improved Player, Most Consistent Player, Team Player and Best Fielder. For Batting, and Bowling the award will be based on the highest aggregates derived from the official Scorebooks. Aggregates include both innings but exclude finals. In the case of more than one player sharing the highest aggregate the player with the highest average will be awarded the trophy. No one person may win more than one of the above awards.

In addition, consideration will be given by the Management Committee to recognizing “all rounder” skills where the efforts of an individual player provide justification for an All-rounder award. As a guide, within the Junior Division, minimum 100 runs scored and 10 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 7 catches/stumpings). Intermediate Division, minimum 150 runs scored and 15 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 10 catches/stumpings). All awards shall be based on aggregates and be inclusive of first and second innings but exclusive of finals. The Management Committee will look at situations that parallel these performance levels and take such efforts into account.

Senior Division: To each team there shall be available awards for batting, bowling, and, where earned, All-rounder. For Batting, and Bowling the award will be based on the highest aggregates derived from the official Scorebooks. Aggregates include both innings but exclude finals. In the case of more than one player sharing the highest aggregate the player with the highest average will be awarded the trophy. To qualify as an All-rounder the recipient must have achieved in the season, no less than 200 runs scored and 20 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 15 catches/stumpings). A player who represents the club in more than one team shall have all efforts credited. All awards shall be based on aggregates and be inclusive of first and second innings but exclusive of finals.

9 JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE DIVISIONS PERFORMANCE AWARDS: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Six (6) trophies awarded.

Batting Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who scores the most runs in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The most runs will be the aggregate of all runs credited to the batsman as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Runs scored in finals shall be excluded.

Bowling Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who takes the greatest number of wickets in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The greatest number of wickets will be the aggregate of all wickets credited to the bowler as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Wickets taken in finals shall be excluded.

Wicket Keeping Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who as the wicketkeeper is credited with the greatest number of dismissals in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The greatest number of dismissals will include all catches and stumpings credited to the keeper as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Finals shall be excluded. In the event of two keepers or more having an identical tally, byes but not leg byes shall be taken into account and the award made to the keeper with the lowest number of byes.

Note: In all cases above, in the event of a tied aggregate, the award will be determined on average.

SENIOR DIVISION PERFORMANCE AWARDS: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Three (3) trophies awarded.

SPECIAL CLUB AWARDS: Senior Club Champion: (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Determined by the Management Committee. Derived from an examination of the Scorebooks. Awarded to the most outstanding senior cricketer in the club who, through efforts with bat or ball has proved competitive at the higher levels of the SSCA Competition. In determining the merits of a batsman relative to a bowler (or wicket keeper) for the purpose of assessing this award the general criteria set above shall apply. While first and second innings shall count, finals will be excluded.

Club Champion (Junior and Intermediate divisions): (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Determined by the Management Committee. Derived from an examination of the Scorebooks. Awarded to the most outstanding cricketer in either the junior or intermediate divisions, who through efforts with bat or ball has proved him/herself competitive at the higher levels (A or B Grade) of the SSJCA Competition. In determining the merits of a batsman relative to a bowler (or wicket keeper) for the purpose of assessing this award the general criteria set above shall apply. While first and second innings shall count, finals will be excluded.

Club All Rounder (Junior and Intermediate divisions): (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Determined by the Management Committee. Derived from an examination of the scorebooks. Awarded to the most outstanding all round performance in either the Junior or Intermediate Divisions. As a guide a minimum of 150 runs scored and 15 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 10 catches/stumpings). In the event of a bowler/wicketkeeper qualifying the standard is set as a combination of wickets taken/wicket keeping catches/stumpings equalling a minimum of 15 dismissals. For the purpose of assessing this award the general criteria set above shall apply. In addition 1 point will be awarded for each fielding catch and run out (the Thrower). While first and second innings shall count, finals will be excluded.

10

JUNIOR & INTERMEDIATE CLUB AWARDS: Most Improved Team: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy awarded to players, coach & manager) Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to the team that on results shows improvements in the second half of the season relative to the first half. While the points scored acts as an indicator, the grading and age group of the team will be taken into account.

Bob Price Encouragement Shield: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Awarded to a player within the Junior and/or Intermediate Divisions. Determined by the Management Committee. The award recognises the need to encourage players. Any player may be nominated but the Management Committee will take into account age, performance, level at which played, years of experience. Commitment, effort, enthusiasm for the game are key determinants. Basically, and as simply as possible, the award is designed to encourage a young cricketer to follow his love for the game through playing as long as possible. Generally, a more established player, playing at the higher levels would be seen to be in less need of encouragement than one coming through the levels.

Greg Heffernan Fielding Trophy: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded specifically for fielding effort. The number of catches taken is a factor but for a wicketkeeper allowance is made for the advantages of gloves. Considerations include alertness, speed and accuracy of returns, determination, and encouragement of fellow players, in particular bowlers.

Rookie of the Year: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to a player who has completed their first ever year of competitive cricket and has displayed potential and enthusiasm for the game.

SENIOR CLUB AWARDS: Senior Rookie of the Year: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to a player in the first full year ever of senior cricket who displays a high level of skill, ability, and potential.

EDCC SERVICE AWARDS: Club Service Awards: Introduced in 1996/97, the Service Award acknowledges continuous club playing service and seeks to promote pride in the club. The awards are in periods of five years, ie: five, ten, fifteen, twenty and at twenty-five years Life Membership may be awarded.

Club Member of the Year: (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Awarded to a club member who gives freely of his/her time and energies in supporting the club in its activities. Management Committee members may be nominated in which event the Club Executive shall determine the recipient.

Life Membership: While any club member may nominate any other club member to be a Life Member such nomination is to be in writing with reasons in support. The Management Committee is not bound to accept nominations or give reasons for rejection. In considering any such nomination it will be guided as follows. • The basic merits of each nomination. • The years and nature of service to the club rendered by the nominee. • Generally, but not exclusively, no less than ten years club service is seen as a minimum.

EDDC BRADMAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is to select two players eligible to compete in the under 12 age group, preferably from the highest graded team, and send them to attend the Talented Player Coaching Camp conducted by the Bradman Foundation. The course is conducted at Bowral during school holidays. The Club will cover all player costs associated with the camp.

Preference will be given to selecting A grade players with special consideration directed towards those in their second year in that age group, although the grade is not the sole factor. Primarily the scheme seeks annually to identify two keen cricketers within the club, who will benefit from this experience and are deemed to have potential. At the same time they must be seen to be interested in pursuing cricket at the higher levels.

The Management Committee with input from relevant coaches will make the selection at the end of each season. Selections are subject to informal acceptance by players and parents prior to places being reserved, funds committed and a formal decision being announced. Recipients of this award must be registered members of the EDCC as of the time the camp is to be conducted. The selection process and actions taken in the case of the applicants not meeting the above criteria is at the discretion of the Management Committee and no correspondence will be entered into.

11 WESLEY ADAMS MEMORIAL TROPHY: (Junior and Intermediate divisions): (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Nominations are sought. This award seeks to reflect values that Wes held dear. It seeks to recognise a spirit of endeavour and pride in effort taking into account fair play, teamwork and sportsmanship. It is meant for the aspiring player who shows preparedness to put in the hard work and commitment which one may expect will lead to accomplishing the goals for which he or she aims.

NOTE: - EDCC JUNIOR BATTING & BOWLING RECORDS

In the 1990-91 season the junior competition rules were changed as follows: - from time limit to an over limit game, with restrictions on individual bowlers, the number of competition rounds were set at ten. In the younger age groups Introductory and Modified rules were introduced. Because of these alterations it was almost impossible for the old individual competition records to be broken, accordingly it was decided by the SSJCA to move the “old records” to a separate section. Therefore the following EDCC Junior Club Batting and Bowling Records are split into two sections also: - (1959/60 to 1989/90) and (1990/91 onwards)

36 TEAM REPORTS

8A BLUE TEAM REPORT Sponsored by – Whitto’s Pizza

THE TEAM: - Joshua Berry, Lachlan Coldwell, Jack Dwarshuis, Nathan Green, Jarrod Mazurkiewicz, Lucas Parsons, Dylan Smith, Joshua Smith, Clay Sutcliffe, Jarrod Thompson What a great year we had! Lots of fun, achievements and an undefeated season. Firstly, I would like to thank Mark Parsons for his tireless efforts managing the team, and being on hand each week to do the scoring. The parents really appreciated it. Also to Shannon for assisting in the coaching of the kids and providing them with your depth of knowledge. The year started off like many others, full of hope and determination to be the best team we could be. The team was a mixture of 3 players from both U8A teams of last year plus 4 new players. We had assembled a strong team with experience and skill, plus the new players bringing in enthusiasm. 10 games over 20 weeks and never once did I believe this young batch of cricketers couldn’t win the game. We were never once in difficulty, and it was well deserved that we ended the season undefeated. Pulling out the stats which many bored train trips to work helped to compile, every team which faced us had their biggest defeat when playing us. We ended up with a quotient of 4.27, which is the highest for the Engadine club and the seconded highest out of all teams in all clubs. We scored a massive 1100 plus runs off the bat, while conceding only 410 runs off the bat when bowling. We started strongly and we didn’t stop till the end. By the end of the season we had developed a little strategy called, “Unleash the fury”. This involved bowling our best six bowlers during one set of batters. We picked out their best batters and the results speak for themselves. During the 3 games we unleashed the fury, the opposition scored 4 for 19, 5 for 11 and 6 for 17 off their set of 6 overs. During the year the overwhelming comment from opposition coaches was that we had the fastest bowlers in Under 8’s. Sometimes you have 1, maybe 2 really quick bowlers – we had 5 bowlers who were express pace. In fact, one of the coaches called me after the game to congratulate the players on their level of skill and he noted what a pleasure it was to see an U8’s team play with such skill. It gave him something to aim for with his own team. I would like to think it was the coaching, but we all know this is an exceptional bunch of cricketers who will make the red and blue cap of the Dragons proud for many years to come. But it wasn’t just the speed we bowled at – our bowling accuracy as a team improved over the year from 68% to 82% across the team, with the big improvers being Lachlan, Lucas and Nathan. We had plenty of wicket takers, with Jack taking 14, Jarrod M taking 13 and Dylan getting 12. Jarrod T, as a first year cricketer, took an amazing 9 wickets. Everyone during the year took a wicket, which is a great achievement, including Lucas taking a 4 for 4 and Jarrod M taking a 5 for 5. Our batting stood out as well. We had 4 players score 150 runs or more with 5 players scoring at better than a run a ball over the course of the year. As a team we averaged an amazing 88% strike rate. Even our newcomers had days where they knocked the opposition around, with scores like 15, 13 or 10 being scored often. Our average across the team was 17.1 runs, with Jack, Jarrod M and Dylan leading the way. The way to stop the runs was to field well, and we had a number of great fielders with bullet throws. Run outs came thick and fast and Joshua B, Jack and Lachlan had some of the best. Lucas and Dylan took many catches, Lucas even caught out one of our players when he was filling in for the other side. But all the above means nothing if we didn’t follow one simple rule – The Spirit of Cricket. The boys were exceptional in their behaviour and never once let their dominance turn to arrogance. They congratulated the other teams when they performed well, showed concern for the opposition players when they were hurt and never once spoke back even though the other teams were trying to bait them. This is the part of the season I will remember the best – their exceptional attitude to cricket and to its ideals. So… who made up this team of champions? In alphabetical order, the under 8A Blue’s were: JOSHUA BERRY: Josh had another great year in under 8’s. Josh is an all round cricketer, able to bat, bowl and field with skill. In Round 9 he cleaned up a bowler hitting 14 in a single over. Josh’s bowling was quick and straight, being on a hat trick ball in Round 9 as well. Josh’s greatest attribute is his enthusiasm in the field, chasing the ball down and whipping the ball in over the bails more often than not. Well done Josh. 37 LACHLAN COLDWELL: This was Lachlan’s first year playing cricket and he did a great job. He was a quick learner picking up in all aspects of cricket. Lachlan took great joy in achieving, whether it was scoring a run, taking a wicket or getting a run out, you could tell he was enjoying it. In fact, it’s a shame the season ended when it did, as in the last game he got his top score for the year and you could tell the game of cricket was starting to click for him. Well done Lachlan. JACK DWARSHUIS: Jack was an outstanding cricketer throughout the year. He scored 33 three times and ended the season with an average of 110 and a bowling average in the 3’s. Jack is quiet out on the field and let’s his actions speak for him. He has cricketing blood running through him and everything he does on the field is with class. As the coach, it was nice to be able to throw the ball to Jack when in trouble, he always performed. Great year Jack. NATHAN GREEN: Nathan loves his cricket. He is a keen student who listens intently to everything we tell him. Nathan had a great second season improving in his batting and bowling. He hit his first four this year during a powerful innings of 15 and took 6 wickets which is a testament to his progress. Nathan really excelled when he was wicket keeper, taking the fast bowlers with ease including a couple of catches. He showed no fear in doing so. Well played Nathan. JARROD MAZURKIEWICZ: Jarrod lives and breathes cricket. This year his improvement was outstanding, with him acquiring 191 runs at a 63.7 average and taking 13 wickets at 5. Jarrod’s batting was always strong including playing shots through the covers but his bowling showed the biggest improvement. In the last game of the season he took 5 for 5, all bowled, plus to the amazement of everyone on the field, two more went between the wickets – he could have had 7. Fantastic cricket Jarrod. LUCAS PARSONS: Lucas does everything at a hundred miles an hour. When this comes to cricket, it can be quite exciting. His running between the wickets was something to watch, as opposition fielders thought they could get a run out only to see overthrows. Lucas scored lots of runs but it was his bowling which came into play. Lucas was very hard to hit with his working on the ball with his wrist, allowing him to take 9 wickets with only 40 hit off the bat. Grand effort Lucas. DYLAN SMITH: Dylan has a big bat and Dylan has a big shot to go with it. Dylan was our power hitter and top scored with 37. On days when the grass is long, you could rely on Dylan hitting over the top to reach the boundary. He scored an amazing 207 runs in only 9 innings including a great 6. Dylan also bowled fast and straight, being our quickest, taking 12 wickets. Dylan was always active in the field, being our top catcher and run out merchant. Great season Dylan. JOSHUA SMITH: Joshua was our youngest player, but if you were a spectator, you wouldn’t know it. For a first season of cricket, Josh looked and played like a seasoned pro. Only 6, Joshua was a quick bowler and watch out next year when he will be even better and still in the 8’s. Josh’s batting technique looked great and he will improve as each season goes by. Also, Joshua has the most delightful personality with a smile always on his face. Well done Josh. CLAY SUTCLIFFE: Another first year player who improved during the year. Clay loved to bat. He hit a number of fours during the year and did so with a great sense of pride. He showed great concentration as the bowlers came in, attempting to hit the ball. Clay’s bowling improved during the year and he was also unlucky not to take a hat-trick. A great first year and a vital part of the success we had this year. JARROD THOMPSON: Jarrod was Man of the Match in the first game of cricket and played with those high standards throughout. His bowling was exceptional, with his unique form of spin bowling making him very hard to hit and capturing nine wickets through the year. His batting was solid with him developing a number of shots and scoring in each game. Jarrod was a keen learner and trainer always listening to advice and building on it. Excellent achievement Jarrod. I would like to thank the parents for their wonderful support this year and thank the young cricketers for being a pleasure to coach. Best of luck next year in your endeavours. COACH – ANDREW MAZURKIEWICZ MANAGER – MARK PARSONS

8A RED TEAM REPORT

THE TEAM: - Max Batty, Jade Christie, Luke Miller, Dane O’Neil, Riley Spink, Tom Squire, Michael Stock, Chris Todd and Zak Wynter An enjoyable season for players, parents and coaches, with some pretty good results. We had some great victories, a couple of very close losses, and finished the season against the two hardest teams

38 which brought us back down to earth a bit. Our batting and bowling was fabulous all season, with high scoring pairs and loads of wickets. We showed moments of brilliance in the field, but at other times lost our focus. Some hard work at training rectified our fielding to a degree, but there were still lapses of concentration and intensity at crucial times. Every player in the team took wickets and scored runs, which is all you can ask for. All of our 9 players varied in ability and talent but shared an enjoyment of cricket and you should all be proud of yourselves. MAX BATTY: In his second year of under 8’s, Max has really matured as a player. He has always had the talent, but now also has speed strength and athleticism to go with it. Max knows how to find the boundary with the bat, and often took multiple wickets, conceding very few runs. Must take after his dad. JADE CHRISTIE: Not only a terrific cricketer, Jade has a wonderful personality. Explosive power, speed, skill and an acute awareness for the game, are just a few of the sporting qualities Jade possesses. A bright future ahead for Jade both on and off the field. Also a very good leader. LUKE MILLER: If you were going into battle and your life depended on it, Luke would be the bloke you’d want with you. Skill and athletic ability far beyond his years. Combined with a high level of intelligence and instinct, Luke is a rare talent. The complete cricketer batting, bowling or fielding, you can only admire watching this young man play. DANE O’NEIL: A natural sportsman and enthusiastic cricketer. Dane’s hunger for the game, fuelled an outstanding season. A demon with the ball, Dane constantly showcased his firepower taking many wickets. A quiet but confident young man, Dane was a dream to coach. RILEY SPINK: A real character and a handy wicket keeper and fielder. Riley affected several spectacular run outs during the season and took some very good wickets. Riley is a popular figure amongst his cricketing team mates. THOMAS SQUIRE: A pleasure to coach and work with this fine young man. Certainly the most improved player in the team. He deserved it. Tom worked hard both at training and home on all aspects of his game. And it paid off. You can only be inspired by the personal qualities and work ethic of this young bloke. MICHAEL STOCK: In his first year of cricket, Michael exceeded all expectations. Both his batting and his bowling improved immensely during the course of the season. It was so great to see Michael enjoying his cricket week in week out. CHRISTOPHER TODD: In under 8’s cricket, most runs are scored on leg side. Chris however, had a cover drive that Ricky Ponting would be proud of. He regularly showed off his amazing cover drive at training and in the games. An enthusiastic trainer, Chris was a pleasure to coach. ZAK WYNTER: A natural all round sportsman. It was Zak’s first year of cricket, but it didn’t take him long to get the hang of things. His speed in the field was phenomenal, leading to many great run outs. By the end of the season, Zak’s batting and bowling had reached a very high standard.

8B TEAM REPORT

THE TEAM: - Dylan Croker, Harrison (Harry) Furlong, Keelan Jenkins, Auzziz Kayani, Osman Kayani, Alexander (Alex) Lee, Lachlan Mills, Bailey Pintatara, Rithik Sahay, Cameron Westlake The new season brought together 10 boys eager to start their first ever game of mod cricket. The aim was to help every player learn, develop and enjoy the basic skills of the game. To this end I think we were pretty successful. The improvement in bowling, batting & fielding skills throughout the season was the greatest pleasure for myself and our manager Gary. Every boy gave 100% on the field and training attendances were very good for all players. The season found us winning a few and losing a few, all of the boys took at least 1 wicket and each contributed in the run scoring department. A huge thank you to our manager Gary Furlong. Without a doubt this is the most difficult role in the team. Gary carried out all team communications, was match scorer, no mean feat with mod-cricket, and 39 also had to add results and statistics to the association scoring website introduced for the first time this season. The season would not, however, have been as successful without the support of you – the mums and dads who turn up each week and help out on training nights and match days. Thank you for all the help this season. Thank you also for your support and encouragement of your children. Hopefully the kids have enjoyed their first year of cricket and hope to see you all again next season. DYLAN CROKER Batting - Innings: 9 Runs: 159 Ave: 26.50 Bowling - Overs: 27 Wickets: 8 Ave: 13.63 Dylan is a natural cricketer. His timing of the ball when batting is excellent and he is truly enjoyable to watch batting. Dylan played the game with fun, but also showed he has concentration levels in him that enabled him to consistently perform and score runs throughout the season. You only have to look back at the match results over the season to see that Dylan consistently top-scored and I am sure he will continue to develop and improve over the coming years if he wishes to continue playing. HARRISON (HARRY) FURLONG Batting - Innings: 9 Runs: 26 Ave: 4.33 Bowling - Overs: 23 Wickets: 3 Ave: 40.33 Harry worked really hard on his batting and bowling throughout the season (dragging Gary down to the nets when it was 35+ degrees) and the results started to show for him in the second half. He developed into a handy little middle-order batsman and is starting to look more and more comfortable with his batting and bowling. KEELAN JENKINS Batting - Innings: 9 Runs: 24 Ave: 4.80 Bowling - Overs: 21 Wickets: 5 Ave: 25.60 Keelan is an absolute pleasure to have in the team and to coach. Keelan gave 110% throughout the season and a highlight was his three wickets against Sylvania at home in Round 3. Keelan’s batting improved more and more as the season went on and his defensive and attacking shots were testament to the hard work he had been putting in at training throughout the year. AUZZIZ KAYANI Batting - Innings: 7 Runs: 69 Ave: 17.25 Bowling - Overs: 21 Wickets: 10 Ave: 7.50 Auzziz is the younger of the Kayani brothers, however, his talent is plainly obvious for all to show. Auzziz showed from his first game that he has loads of talent and consistently scored runs throughout the season. Hopefully he will continue his cricket as he grows as I am sure he will develop into a fine cricketer. OSMAN KAYANI Batting - Innings: 6 Runs: 106 Ave: 35.33 Bowling - Overs: 20 Wickets: 6 Ave: 12.83 Osman is the second half of the Kayani brothers and is possessed with the same talents as his younger brother. It was certainly interesting watching the other mums and dads from the other teams when they first saw Osman steaming in to bowl as they were genuinely fearful for their children. On his day, Osman could take a bag of wickets and then back up and score 20-odd runs and make it look easy. ALEXANDER (ALEX) LEE Batting - Innings: 9 Runs: 100 Ave: 11.11 Bowling - Overs: 29 Wickets: 9 Ave: 11.89 Alex showed great skill with the bat and ball throughout the Summer. He consistently scored runs whenever he went out to bat and his leg-spin bowling came on nicely as the season progressed. His fielding improved and he could be counted on to always cut-off quick singles close-in to the wicket. LACHLAN MILLS Batting - Innings: 9 Runs: 50 Ave: 7.14 Bowling - Overs: 25 Wickets: 6 Ave: 19.50 Lachlan improved out of sight over the season. During the second half of the season, Lachlan’s defensive shots were outstanding and a highlight was watching him bat in the last match of the season. 40

He was impossible to get out and showed that cricket is not always about scoring plenty of runs, but is also about being defensive and getting a job done. BAILEY PINTATARA Batting - Innings: 6 Runs: 31 Ave: 5.17 Bowling - Overs: 18 Wickets: 3 Ave: 33.00 Towards the end of the season, the hard work that Bailey had been putting in was becoming evident. He was becoming a regular at either taking wickets or coming close to taking them. Bailey’s batting improved throughout the Summer and again, he saved the best till last with his huge batting effort in the last round, achieving his top score of the Summer of 10. Hopefully Bailey will continue next Summer and build on his efforts of this season. RITHIK SAHAY Batting - Innings: 8 Runs: 22 Ave: 2.75 Bowling - Overs: 23 Wickets: 2 Ave: 52.50 Rithik was one of our most improved players of the season. His late season flurry of wickets belied the efforts he had put in throughout the Summer. Rithik has developed into a good little cricketer and if he continues playing next Summer his skills will develop even faster and he will have an even more successful season. CAMERON WESTLAKE Batting - Innings: 10 Runs: 37 Ave: 6.17 Bowling - Overs: 23 Wickets: 1 Ave: 105.00 Cameron is by far the gutsiest player on the team. He never gives up and he surprised many an opposing player with his pace bowling this Summer and was truly unlucky not to take more wickets. Cameron has an array of shots and one of the more humorous moments of the season was watching him successfully play reverse sweep shots in the nets. Unfortunately, he didn’t try it out for real during the matches, which is a pity, because he would have impressed everyone with that sort of shot.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN Nathan Marciante BOWLER Brendan Curtis MOST IMPROVED Brayden Heffernan FIELDING AWARD Mitchell Aitken ALL ROUNDER Nathan Marciante ALL ROUNDER Brendan Curtis ALL ROUNDER Dylan Rae

THE TEAM: - Brendan Curtis (c), Nathan Marciante (v.c), Dylan Rae (wk), Jacob Heffernan, Brayden Heffernan, Tommy Myers, Lachlan Smith, Jake Goulding, Joshua Johnston, Joel Almond, Connor Hetherington, Mitchell Aitken Well what a wonderful Summer these guys have given us. Minor Premiers, undefeated all season topping it off with a good win in the Final. They were the best team all year. What a pleasure they were for me to coach. As it was the first time for a long while since I had taken guys of this age I must admit I felt a little nervous. I felt it was harder for them than for me, but I needn’t have worried. Everything I dished out to them, they came back for more. The harder, the better. In the end we were a very well disciplined team. They played with spirit way above their years. Every side we played commented on our fielding and behavior. They all were a credit to the club and their parents. To the parents I thank you all so very much for your total support and the Saturday morning BBQ’s were much appreciated. To Harry, as ever a legend. So committed to the boys and cricket. One of a kind that’s for sure. Also to Brad for being such a good manager, and really doing everything for me, which meant that in turn all I had to do was coach the boys. I must give a very special mention to Ryan Croom. If he is a product of Engadine Cricket Club we must be doing something right. A great help all year, if we leave cricket in the hands of young men like him we are going in the right direction. “Schoie” 41 PLAYER PROFILE BRENDAN CURTIS: 197 runs av 21.89, 19 wickets av 4.89, 7 catches & 7 run outs. Our captain and he certainly leads by example. Does not know the meaning of the words “Give In”. Opened the innings for us in every game and really put us on the front foot. Very good batsman, excellent bowler and without doubt the best fieldsman in the competition. I predict a big future for this young man. Not a negative bone in his body, a real pleasure to coach. Thanks for a great season Brendan. NATHAN MARCIANTE: 328 runs av 36.44, 24 wickets av 3.67. What a good cricketer this boy will grow into. I think by far the best all-round cricketer in the competition. His bowling just got better and better. A destructive top order bat, who when he decides to move his feet will improve out of site. Nathan never stopped trying for his team and myself all season. I count myself lucky to have coached him. Thanks Nathan, I hope I have helped you along your way. DYLAN RAE: 141 runs av 20.14, 11 catches, 2 stumpings. We had no wicket keeper at the first few training sessions, and Dylan said I’ll do it, and do it he did. His determination and improvement had to be seen. Regularly standing up to the medium pacers and taking stumpings. Not at all bad for an under ten cricketer. Never a fuss or worry about his safety. He batted in the top order and really did a terrific job for us. Never stopped talking and encouraging his team mates. A handy bowler when called upon. I’m a lucky coach to have a friend like Dylan. TOMMY MEYER: 12 wickets av 10.5. Tom’s cricketing skills really improved this season. His bowling was a successful part of our attack. Very good in the field and a real competitor. Did a good job when called upon to bat. Again a joy to coach. Unfortunately we lose Tommy back to South Africa this year. Their gain our loss. Good luck for the future Tom. JACOB HEFFERNAN: 110 runs av 22. Our gritty little opening batsman. A wonderful temperament and a big heart will ensure Jacob will become a very competent top order batsman. When he grows a little and gets stronger the game will become so much easier for him. He actually went for three entire games opening the innings and not getting out once. For an under ten that’s a big effort. Also he broke his wrist part way through the season which hampered his progress. Good luck for the future Jacob. BRAYDEN HEFFERNAN: 99 runs av 14.14, 5 wickets av 12.6. A gifted little batsman, a very good bowler and an energetic and alert fieldsman. I also predict a big future for this little guy. Also blessed with a good attitude, great temperament and a big heart. Very easy to coach and keen to improve. I spent the best part of the season mixing him and his brother up. A real problem when they were batting together. Thank-you Brayden for your tremendous efforts. LACHLAN SMITH: 3 wickets av 17.33. Lachlan as with two other boys from this side will stay down in next seasons under tens and should have a big season. Keen as mustard in every game. One of our best fielders week in and week out. With a lot of hard work and perseverance Lachlan’s bowling improved out of sight. He became a big part of our attack, regularly picking up useful wickets. Didn’t get a lot of time at the wicket, but when he did he applied himself well. Thanks Lachlan, look forward to a big season in the future. JAKE GOULDING: 25 runs av 12.5, 9 wickets av 11.22. Jake the snake was part of our powerful bowling line up. A good all-round fieldsman and a very capable left handed bat. Jake bowled extremely well in the Final for us. Like all of the boys very easy to coach. His attitude was always spot on. Good on yah Jake. JOSHUA JOHNSTON: 70 runs av 17.5, 7 wickets av 8.43. Another boy who will stay down next season and I reckon he will kill them. A good aggressive left hand bat Josh played some really good innings for us. He also featured prominently in our bowling line up and regularly chipped in when we needed wickets. Doesn’t say too much, but gives plenty of effort always. Good luck next season Josh – thank you very much. JOEL ALMOND: 41 runs av 5.86, 4 wickets av 14.75. Joel also stays down next season and it won’t surprise me if he gets a swag of wickets and a lot of runs. I think like his brother he will develop into a very good bowler who can bat. One of our best fielders week in and week out. Technically a very good bat, but needs to get a bit stronger and work on his shotmaking. All in all Joel had a very good season. – Thanks Mate. CONNOR HETHERINGTON: 40 runs av 6.67, 9 wickets av 8. What a good season my old mate Connor has had. Really proving his worth in the Final. Playing a really good innings for his side, then bowling some well flighted offie’s with a wet ball. I feel Connor has really improved and if he keeps working hard at training will continue. Very sound fieldsman with a very strong arm. Plus he is a real character. Well done Mate. MITCHELL AITKEN: 15 runs av 3.75. Well Australia might have Andrew Symonds, South Africa have Herchelle Gibbs, but we had Mitch fielding in the covers and I wouldn’t swap him for anyone. 42

What a great job he did for us every match, saving 15-20 runs per game. Some of the catches he took were out of this world. His bowling really came on and when needed showed determination with the bat. Easy to coach, a pleasure. Good luck Mate. To my team, I hope that I have given you all a platform to go forward. Our game was based upon hard work, self discipline and playing as a team. I wish you all the very best in your cricketing efforts in the future. In closing I would like to thank the Engadine Cricket Club for allowing me to coach such a fine group of boys. And personally thank the committee for all their support with everything we asked. The club is run so well, and that is due to a very keen hard working bunch of volunteers. I would also like to make mention of a trend that has slowly crept into junior sport over the last five years or so. Once upon a time boys played cricket in the Summer and football in the Winter. Now for some reason in Summer apart from cricket we have oz tag, rep soccer, rep soccer training, tennis, Summer soccer and goodness knows what else. These are only very young boys who’s bodies are still growing. I believe this overload is partly responsible for most of the injuries we now see today, seldom seen in years gone by. And I can guarantee you by the age of about 15-16 years most of these boys will have had enough and just want to go off surfing. Sport is meant to be played for enjoyment, don’t make it a chore for them. Yours in Cricket - Peter Schofield.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN Adam Batty BOWLER Jordan Findanis MOST IMPROVED Mitchell Sargent MOST CONSISTENT Joey Cox

THE TEAM: - Adam Batty, Joey Cox, Jordon Findanis, Nash Martin, Mitchell Sargeant, Joshua Ridge, Ryan Findanis, Anthony Franco, Matt Wright, Kurt Slade, Matthew Westlake, Nicholas Jago On behalf of David and myself, I would like to thank the boys for a most enjoyable season. When we all gathered for the first training session way back in September 2006, we all set our sights to have a very successful year, and become a competitive team. Although we did not make the semi finals, the boys should be very proud of themselves, because everyone of them improved immensely by season’s end. David started teaching the boys the basics and this really helped the boys, to become more and more confident as the season went along. By the last month of the competition, we played very well, and narrowly lost a couple of matches. It was fantastic to see the boys develop their skills during the season. And with most of the boys staying in the under 10’s for the 2007/2008 season, we should really see the benefits of the hard work the boys put in. PLAYER PROFILE ADAM BATTY: Adam is our express bowler, coming off a run up that the great Jeff Thompson would be proud of. He also excelled with the bat, hitting some very good boundaries during the season. Well done Adam. JOEY COX: This boy really loves to play, he gives 100% every week. Mr Consistent of the team. A very good all rounder. Joey impressed with his bowling and running between the wickets, and also scored some good runs and whilst keeping was very confident behind the stumps. Joey was involved in numerous run outs during the season. Great season Joey. JORDON FINDANIS: We nearly did not have this boy in our team this year, due to him basically only played because his little brother signed up and thank goodness for that. Jordon is one of the biggest hitters of a cricket ball for his age that I have ever witnessed. If only they allowed sixes in the 43 under 10’s competition, because he hit plenty. Jordon, is also a very good fielder and bowler. Unfortunately he is going up to the 12’s for next season. NASH MARTIN: New to the game of cricket, Nash really improved in all aspects of the game as the year progressed. An excellent team player who gives his best every week. His bowling was very accurate, and was very hard to score off. He should be proud of the effort he put in this season. Excellent year Nash. MITCHELL SARGEANT: One of the left handers in the team. Mitch has a beautiful bowling action, very smooth approach and he manages to get the ball to swing a mile, which is not an easy thing to do (just ask Shaun Tait). Quiet in nature, Mitch went about his cricket with a good attitude, and was a pleasure to coach. JOSHUA RIDGE: Josh is the enforcer in the side, a pretty big bloke for his age. He intimidated the opposition with his very good line and length bowling. Also a very capable batsman, who when he puts his mind to it scored runs consistently. He played some good shots, one being the blitzing cover drive in round 2 versus Como Jannali. RYAN FINDANIS: Ryan’s season was very pleasing. He bowled extremely well, and like his bigger brother is a fine batsman. He also is a very good fielder, who stopped many fours, diving around the boundaries. Ryan has huge potential, and with a little more patience, will become a very good player. Great year Ryan. ANTHONY FRANCO: Small in stature but big in the heart department, Anthony is one of the best team players going around. He enjoys nothing more than to hang out with his mates , playing the game of cricket on Saturday afternoons. His bowling improved as the season progressed, and with a little more size next year (plenty of Wheat Bix’s for brekky), he should be able to be a bit more consistent. MATT WRIGHT: Matt, not Matthew or Max, had a very good season. You can tell he just loves his sport, as he has all the mannerisms of the players of the Aussie Cricket team (too much TV). Matt’s bowling was the highlight of his season, as he progressed into a very hard bowler to score off. KURT SLADE: Kurt is another lefty, who by the season’s end turned into being a great swing bowler. Not exaggerating, he swung the ball at least a foot, and made life for the batsmen he bowled to very difficult indeed. Kurt’s batting was satisfactory as well, but the best thing I noticed, was how watchful he was whilst facing up. In the future could become a very handy opener. MATTHEW WESTLAKE: Matty is new to the game, but improved a great deal as the season went on. I was impressed at how well his bowling finished up at season’s end, as he was very difficult to score off. He also is a pretty handy batsman, and with a little more work, will be a lot more confident in his own ability. Matty - good season, well done. NICHOLAS JAGO: Nik, is another one of those players who is a coach’s dream. A very reliable cricketer who will give nothing less than 100% every week. Again, a player whose bowling improved during the season. Nik’s batting was full of cheeky little singles, and with this, I also believe he will develop into an opening batsman.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN Dylan Lees BOWLER Anuraag Varanasi MOST IMPROVED Angus Brown MOST CONSISTENT James Grady ALL ROUNDER Dylan Lees

THE TEAM:- Ben Barford, Braiden Broadstock, Angus Brown, Jett Cheadle, James Dowd, James Grady, Dylan Lees, Jake Munro, Joel Topham, Anuraag Varanasi, Michael Warner It was a season of learning for the boys, some of whom were new to cricket and some who had played before. The grade was dominated by Caringbah Green who went through undefeated (including the final against Caringbah Gold). Our team had 2 wins, 2 byes and 6 losses and finished sixth overall out of seven. 44

We struggled at times with concentration and during the middle of those hot Summer days the prospect of bowling 18 overs seemed remote at times. However, after an over containing some less than enthusiastic fielding, it was always comforting to see the boys had enough energy left to race in and ask if they could bowl the next over. We never had any shortage of volunteers to bowl, wicket keep, or go off for a rest. Everybody did something notable throughout the season. Some of the highlights were: BEN BARFORD: Ben joined the team part-way through the season, and showed a good technique with both batting and bowling. He has the potential to develop into a talented cricketer. Ben scored 30 runs and took 5 wickets and one run out. BRAIDEN BROADSTOCK: Braiden displayed a unique bowling style, and was enthusiastically supported by his grandfather from the sidelines (and from deep mid off on one occasion). Braiden scored 34 runs and took 6 wickets and one run out. ANGUS BROWN: Angus improved as the season progressed, and towards the end was on fire with bowling and batting. But arguably his finest moments were the two screamers that he took in the outfield. Angus scored 16 runs and took 2 wickets, 2 catches in the field and one catch as keeper. JETT CHEADLE: Jett highlighted his talent with some enthusiastic batting and tight, containing bowling. Some of the boundaries he hit showed a good eye and great timing. Jett had the third highest aggregate with 57 runs, and he took 6 wickets, one run out and one catch as keeper. JAMES DOWD: James provided some left arm variation with his bowling, and his batting improved as the season progressed. He always had a point of view to contribute while in the field. James scored 18 runs and took 2 wickets. JAMES GRADY: James was a consistent performer in both the batting and bowling departments. After spilling some outfield catches during the season, we inadvertently discovered that the less time he has to think about a catch, the better – when talking to the square leg umpire, he turned around to see the batsman had smashed the ball straight at him, stuck out a hand, and caught it. James scored 27 runs and took 5 wickets, one catch in the field and three run outs. DYLAN LEES: Dylan has developed into a fine cricketer, displaying excellent skills in all facets of the game. He and Anuraag dueled throughout the season for both the batting and bowling honours, which eventually were shared between them. Dylan topped the batting aggregates and averages with 111 runs at 27.75, and took 13 wickets and two run outs. JAKE MUNRO: Jake was new to the game and improved as the season progressed with his batting, and his bowling accuracy. While not scoring a lot of runs, he did prove to be hard to dismiss and did not give away his wicket easily. Jake scored 3 runs and took 2 wickets and one run out. JOEL TOPHAM: Joel got better as the season went on, with both his batting and bowling showing signs of progress. Towards the end he was starting to hit fours and find the middle of the bat consistently. Joel scored 35 runs and took 7 wickets. ANURAAG VARANASI: Anuraag is a naturally talented cricketer, with a good eye and technique. He is proficient in batting, bowling and fielding, and has a good awareness of the game. He took the bowling honours and was second to Dylan in batting. Anuraag scored 96 runs and took 20 wickets at an astonishing 2.45, with a best of 4-14. He also took one catch in the field and two run outs. MICHAEL WARNER: Michael developed his leggie action, and wrong-un delivery, throughout the season. He was unlucky in one game to finish with only one wicket rather than five, due to some dropped catches and a few balls narrowly missing the stumps of batsmen who had no idea. Even better was Dad’s reaction – umpiring at the bowler’s end he had his head in his hands by the end of the over. Michael scored 36 runs and took 7 wickets and one run out.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Rhys Marlow BOWLER: Nick Chamberlain TEAM PLAYER: Ethan Verdich FIELDING AWARD: Dylan Walton

THE TEAM: - Rhys Marlow (Capt.). Tim Berry, Nick Chamberlain, Duncan Ellem, Michael Favaloro, Josh Kennedy, Brendon Knowles, Matt Lister, Sam Lombo, Michael McFarlane, Luke Smith, Ethan Verdich, Dylan Walton. With a few players new to the game, an influx of under 10’s, and the rest of the players from the previous season ‘D’ team, and being graded in the B’s, it was always going to be a challenging year. Whilst everyone showed potential, consistency was going to be the key. We showed glimpses of what we could do with a couple of impressive wins, but lack of consistency let us down in the end. To the boys credit they kept on trying, and all had some individual highlights against some consistently strong opposition. The ability is there, so let’s hope we all get to see it next season. TIM BERRY: Kept wickets for a large part of the year. By the end of the season, his spinners were difficult to handle. A competent batsman who was comfortable playing the top order bowling. Tim obviously enjoys the game, and hopefully the results will follow. NICK CHAMBERLAIN: Opening bowler for the season whose pace and accuracy continually troubled the early order batsmen. Unlucky not to have more wickets. Achieved a career high batting score, with the ability to go on to get larger scores. Successful in achieving representative selection. DUNCAN ELLEM: Dunc came from the under 10’s but as one of our junior players was one of our most accurate bowlers for the year. Definitely has ability with the bat and with more focus should make an impact in his second year of under 12’s. MICHAEL FAVALORO: Another from last season’s under 10’s, Michael performed well both with the bat and ball. At times opened the bowling with his accurate medium pace and also opened the batting when called upon showing great patience. Will go well in his second year of 12’s BRENDON KNOWLES: Brenno took on the role of opening batsmen during the season, and he showed a more responsible approach in keeping his head down, which resulted in him scoring more runs. Unfortunately he defected to Queensland at Christmas, leaving a big hole in the team. Can put them on the spot with his bowling, and with more focus will only improve. MATT LISTER: Although the figures don’t show it, Matt was always difficult to dismiss, but unfortunately had the knack of getting out just when he was about to get going. Ever reliable in the field, taking a pearler of a catch in one game. Has definite bowling ability, and will only improve with more practice. SAM LOMBO: This was Sam’s first season of cricket, and was always prepared to listen to learn the game. The steady improvement showed itself, leading to being one of the best bowlers in the last game. Few chances to shine with the bat this year and always keen in the field producing some great run outs. RHYS MARLOW: As captain, Rhys led by example with the bat, scoring over 300 runs for the season. Whilst he didn’t experience much success early in the year with his medium pace, a switch to spin proved fruitful. Always reliable in the field. A great all round season. MICHAEL McFARLANE: One of our more experienced players who kept wickets for much of the season. His spin bowling was unplayable at times, and unlucky not to get more wickets. A little more concentration with batting will only result in more runs. LUKE SMITH: Another first season player who was keen to pick up on the game. Showed great improvement in bowling to the point where by the end of the season was swinging the ball a mile, and producing unplayable deliveries. With more experience batting will only improve, as it did during the year. ETHAN VERDICH: Took out the team award this year, being a regular contributor with the bat, ball and in the field. Always opened the batting, consistently performing against accurate bowling. He quite often opened the bowling, achieving the best team bowling average. Grabbed a handful of catches in the field. Definitely has a future in the game. Successful in achieving representative selection. 46

DYLAN WALTON: Another strong improver during the year, achieving his career high batting score towards the end of the season. His bowling improved greatly in accuracy, and will improve further with practice. Fielding highlights were taking a hat trick of catches in one game, and a couple of direct hit run outs.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Joshua Kedwell BOWLER: Eden Murphy MOST CONSISTENT: Chris Pendergast TEAM PLAYER: Matt Berry

THE TEAM: - Leigh Atkins, Nathan Benson, Matt Berry, Jarrod Cosgriff, Tom Dowd, Trent Edwards, Matt Flegg, Alex Henderson, Reid Hourigan, Josh Kedwell, Josh Kennedy, Eden Murphy, Chris Pendergast We started the year with 8 new players and although we didn’t win a match it was great to see the improvement in each player as we progressed through the rounds. In particular our fielding and bowling improved out of sight. More work in the batting area, particularly with our technique, will see the boys become more competitive next year. Nevertheless the boys, parents, coach and manager had a thoroughly enjoyable year. Our enthusiasm for the club and the sport never waned. We were extremely unlucky not to take out the last round just being pipped in the last over. Special thanks to the Kennedy’s for hosting a great BBQ during the year. On behalf of the players, parents and supporters special thanks go to Rob Pendergast and Sue Kennedy for giving up their time to coach the boys. Individual Profiles LEIGH ATKINS: This is Leigh’s first year of cricket for the Dragons. Leigh is a very solid performer whose batting improved in the second half of the season. His 6 not out in the last game was a measure of the improvement. Leigh is an enthusiastic player who also fielded well throughout the year snaring 2 good catches. His bowling progressively improved taking 3 wickets for the year with his economy rate getting better in the second half of the year. Leigh will benefit from the season under his belt and we look forward to seeing him back next season. Well done Leigh. NATHAN BENSON: Nathan had a very good first year with the Dragons. Nathan turned up for matches extremely keen to do well. In particular his bowling improved as the year progressed. Nathan’s unorthodox bowling style often deceived the batsman. He finished the year with 5 good wickets and effected a great runout at the bowlers end in round 6 against Miranda preventing their opening batsman from scoring a half century. Nathan worked on his batting during the year and should benefit from the season. Nathan next year should be bigger and better. Good effort. See you then. MATT BERRY: Matt was the terrier of the team always trying his best. Matt kept wicket in most matches and was rewarded with a run out and a catch behind the stumps. Matt had a good year with the bat scoring a great 22 in round 2 against De La Sale. He finished the year off with 57 runs. When he took the gloves off and bowled he also performed well for the team taking 5 good wickets. Matt’s contribution to the team has been recognised with him awarded the 12D team player of the year. Well done Matt we look forward to seeing you next year. JARROD COSGRIFF: Jarrod’s first year for the Dragons showed us that with a bit more experience and coaching on his technique that he will develop both as a batsman and bowler. Jarrod hit a 4 in the last round which displayed the power he possesses with the bat with one bounce and into the fence. He produced a great bowling performance in round 7 against Como Jannali taking 3 for 11 off 5 a testimony to his potential. We are confident that Jarrod will develop his skills with time and concentration. Good effort mate. We will see you next year. 47 TOM DOWD: Tom had another enjoyable year playing for the Dragons with his mates. Tom’s bowling improved this year where his sundry rate was kept to a minimum. Tom’s best game came in round 8 against Caringbah where he took 3 for 17 of 4 overs which earned him the junior player of the round. Well done Tom. Keep enjoying playing with your mates and the Dragons. Look forward to seeing you next year. TRENT EDWARDS: Big hitting Trent did not disappoint the parents and supporters this year with 5 big fours with the bat scoring a total of 52 runs for the year. Great work Trent. Trent’s bowling improved taking 4 good wickets with much more accuracy. Trent is also learning to use his height to advantage through gaining extra bounce off the pitch. 3 good catches were snared by Trent who had a great all round year. We hope next year is the year of the Trent. MATT FLEGG: Matt’s accurate bowling was the feature in his first year of cricket. Quite often Matt opened the bowling and kept the run rate and sundries down. Matt finished the season with 3 good wickets. One of Matt’s highlights was seen in round 6 against Miranda. With only 1 stump to aim at Matt pulled off a great runout. With a bit more confidence and technique Matt’s batting will improve next year and there is no doubt about his ability to put the ball on the spot. Good effort mate, see you next year. ALEX HENDERSON: Alex displayed good all round ability in his first year of cricket. His athleticism and enthusiasm quite often inspired the guys. Alex scored 20 runs with the bat and took a wicket. He shared the keeping duties with Matt Berry pulling off a great runout and taking a catch from a fine edge. Alex bowled without a lot of luck. His highlight was in round 9 against De La Sale where he finished with figures of 0 for 8 off 6 overs. Hope to see you next year mate. Well done. REID HOURIGAN: Reid also displayed great all round ability in his first year of cricket. In particular his fielding was a feature. He quite often opened the batting and displayed good temperament against the quicks. Reid finished the year with 15 runs, 3 wickets and a fantastic outfield catch. Reid enjoyed his year with the guys and will no doubt benefit from the experience. Good effort mate. See you next year. JOSH KEDWELL: A fantastic year for Josh in all respects. Josh took the batting honours with 135 runs for the season. He performed well with the ball snaring 4 wickets. His fielding was outstanding. Josh possesses great reflexes, good hand eye coordination and commitment. Parents and supporters led by Club President Steve Jones were treated to a fantastic dismissal in round 8 against Caringbah where the opposition batsman square drove a ball like a bullet towards the boundary only to be snapped out of the air by Josh. Great effort mate. Josh’s 34 runs with the bat against Miranda in round 6 was a great innings to watch. Josh can only get better and we look forward to him returning to the Dragons next year. Well done mate. JOSH KENNEDY: Josh although in his first year of cricket showed good natural ability. It must be in the genes. Josh improved in all aspects as the season progressed. He often fielded in the deep and saved many boundaries using his speed and agility. He took 2 great catches and pulled off a great runout against Aquinas in the last round. Josh scored 33 runs off the bat and took 4 great wickets. Josh will return to the under 12’s next season and will no doubt be very competitive. Well done buddy see you next year. EDEN MURPHY: Another player with good natural ability playing in his first year Eden improved out of site in the second half of the year. In particular his bowling accuracy and speed have increased. Eden finished the season scoring 9 runs and taking 8 wickets. Eden is the deserved winner of the best bowler award. Eden is a natural sportsman who possesses great speed over the ground which was highlighted by the many fours he saved fielding at backward square leg. We look forward to your return to the Dragons next season. Great year mate. CHRIS PENDERGAST: Another one of our big hitters with the bat was Chris. Chris finished the season scoring 52 runs highlighted by a great 26 in round 6 against Miranda which included six boundaries. Chris was the second highest wicket taker snaring 5 for the season. Chris’s bowling accuracy improved this year and he consistently performed well throughout the year. Well done and congratulations on being named most consistent player. See you next season. The awarding of the 2 subjective awards proved to be quite difficult for the coach and manager this year with any one of 6 players worthy of consideration. To get a result and to be fair to the boys we used the statistics to settle the matter. Rob, Sue and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Dragons committee for their support throughout the year and we look forward to another Summer of cricket with a great club. AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN Nathan Loder BOWLER Joel D’Imperio TEAM PLAYER Jordan Dow FIELDING AWARD Ryan Almond ALL ROUNDER Joel D’Imperio

THE TEAM: - Ryan Almond, James Barnes, Joel D’Imperio, Jordan Dow, Blake Duncum, Ben Dwarshuis, Liam Herne, Matt Hobden, Matthew Launt, Nathan Loder, Hayden Morton, Hayden Smith

With 9 first year Under 14’s in the squad, it was always going to be a tough slog for the boys to go all the way this year. As the aim for the year was to make the final, the coach was fairly ecstatic when the boys went all the way through the comp undefeated to become Minor Premiers and Premiers. This was a huge effort by all of the boys, beating St.Pats comfortably……..that’s what I’ll say anyway….in all three outings. The Final was the game that will stick in everyone’s memory as it was an absolute nail- biter. After only scoring 79 batting first and St.Pats working their way well to 1-29 at lunch, the boys came out firing……rolling the favoured St.Pats side for a paltry 60 runs. This makes it three U/14A premierships on the trot with a good hope next year to make it four. Congratulations also goes to 6 of the boys who were involved in the premiership winning Gee Shield side in the rep comp this year.

RYAN ALMOND (Moondo): Ryan was one of our opening bowlers who bowled without luck on many occasions. He ended up with 11 wickets but deserved many more, beating outside edges on countless occasions. He was solid with the bat a few times with his highest score being 45 against Bosco. Ryan finished the season with averages around 15 with both bat and ball, a strong all round season.

JAMES BARNES (Barnsey): Barnsey had a solid season this year…..and if we can get him moving his feet, we might be able to take out the 4 or 5 LBW’s he ended up with…..a good top score of 17 was a good finish to a tough year with the bat. In round 10 Barnsey knocked off the St.Pats gun bat so we had no doubt he would step up in the final……Bowling first change he had the figures of 5 overs 5 maidens 2 wickets for 0, amazing figures for the young fella, knocking off two guys that had scored over 800 runs between them this year. Well done Barnsey…..match winning performance.

JOEL D’IMPERIO (Dimpy, JD): I don’t mind saying that this kid is an absolute freak…..What he can do with a ball at this age is amazing. A right arm leggy who can spin the ball a long way, Joel finished with 19 wickets at 10.86 to go with his 190 runs opening the bat. As a first year U/14, I’m looking forward to seeing what Joel will do in the same grade next year. Joel is a big game player and he showed it this year in the final, top scoring with 20 and coming up with the figures of 11.3 overs, 4 maidens 5 for 17. We are a lucky club having this bloke around.

JORDON DOW (Jordy, Cheeza): Jordy is a quality player, just ask him…..Another one of our many first year 14’s, Jords had a very strong year with the gloves, finishing with 8 dismissals for only 14 byes. He also scored 134 runs at an average of 22.33, which is awesome considering that he was batting at 7 or 8 most of the year. An outstanding bowler, he finished the season with 6 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets for 30 runs…..Ok he cant bowl but the rest he’s good at!

BLAKE DUNCUM (Dunny): Dunny was our Master Blaster who pulled us out of trouble a few times. Any time the strike rate needed a boost….Dunny was the man for the job. 120 runs at an average of 24 along with a few wickets and a couple of catches meant that Dunny enjoyed a good all-round season. Two cracking catches in the final capped off a strong year. Well done Dunny….Good luck in the 16’s.

BEN DWARSHUIS (Benny, Blacky): Kid can play…..Benny scored our only century this year, a chanceless 101* against our mates over at Bosco. Ben finished with 257 runs at 37 and 14 wickets at 10 for a cracking first year of 14’s. Strong 49 and quick in the field, batsmen soon learnt not to run on his arm….till the Final where Benny got a crucial run out for the 9th wicket. Another year of 14’s next season…..I’m tipping a big one.

LIAM HERNE (Herney): Liam had a good year with the ball, claiming 10 wickets for an average of round about 14. He cleaned up plenty of opposition bats coming in to bowl in the middle overs and didn’t go for many runs in the process. Struggled a little this year with the bat but batted in a vital partnership in the final, helping us to victory. Well done Herney.

MATT HOBDEN (Hobbo): An absolute Giant and a classy all-round cricketer, Hobbo was again unlucky with the ball this year, with opposition players not being able to hit the ball…..or refusing to play shots from his bowling. Lightning fast by the end of the season, Hobbo claimed 8 wickets. His economy rate was under 2 from his 65 overs this year which is huge for an opening bowler. Add to all of this his respectable batting average of 11 made for a great season. Well done Hobbo.

MATTHEW LAUNT (Matty): Matt was a great team player who was always giving 100% effort into anything he did. A strong hitter of the ball and a good, accurate bowler, Matthew contributed well on many occasions to help us win this comp. Batting at number 11 in the final, Matty hit the first 4 of our innings while batting in a crucial 10th wicket partnership. He also fielded like a demon in the final…..not letting anything through. Good season mate.

NATHAN LODER (Nathanamax): Nathan was our captain this year and managed to rack up his third consecutive U14/A premiership. Nathan led from the front, scoring a team best 277 runs at 35 this season in the opening position. A strong keeper and a good tactician, Nathan managed to lead his team to a well deserved premiership. Good luck in the 16’s Nathan.

HAYDEN MORTON (Morts): The stats speak for themselves with Hayden Morton. With a batting average of 47 and a bowling average of 11, Hayden was the fear of many opposition. Unfortunately we lost Hayden to soccer for a lot of the season but any chance he got he was there to help out. His 16* in the Final proved to be very important runs in the context of the match and helped us scrape over the line. See you next year Hayden.

HAYDEN SMITH (Haydos, Gaydos): Hayden was eligible for U/12’s this season but answered the call-up to 14A’s with an amazing first year. Batting at 3 and bowling in the middle overs, Hayden finished with 142 runs at 24 and taking 7 wickets at 12. This competition is hard for a second year 14A….but for a kid who still should have been in the 12’s….He made it look easy. He also ended up with 5 catches this year plus a good catch in the final to dismiss their best bat…….Absolute Gun!

Only a few more things to go through. Congratulations to Jordan Dow who was named as the best Keeper in the Gee Shield this year and to Hayden Smith who received the Cawsey Shield’s Player of the Year award. Two excellent performances boys - well done.

We would like to thank all of the parents who helped out this year - both the management and the boys appreciated your help.

This is one of those seasons where the coach sits back at the end of the season and shakes his head in saying….How did that happen….The reason this happened is because the way these boys have gelled as a team was unlike any other that I have seen as a coach. They were out there playing for each other rather than themselves and this all culminated in what we saw down at Jannali Oval in the Final. Champion team. Well done!

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Alex Teuma BOWLER: James Loughran FIELDING AWARD: Mark Kidd TEAM PLAYER: Mitchell Cox

THE TEAM: - Robbie Farnan (Capt), Scott Boyton, Mitchell Cox, Conor Ellem, Andrew Hoff, Jarryd Holmes, Mark Kidd, James Loughran, Matthew Reynolds, Alex Teuma, Luke Tisdell, Jordan Townsend and Brent Wallis

Another season is over with some wins under our belt and a near final berth. Firstly I would like to thank all the parents for their participation and their attendance at the boy’s games- well done. I would like to thank Janet for her commitment to scoring and being my manager. Thanks again to everybody.

Well from a coach’s point of view it has been great to be a part of this team. It has been a successful year for every player in the side. Well done to Robbie as Captain. He led the team well on and off the field and it’s a credit to him. They all scored runs, picked up wickets and we all got to see some of the best catches ever seen.

To Conor and Robbie congratulations on getting a hat trick. Alot of great bowlers still haven’t achieved this feat - like me and ………..

I am not going to write a story about each player, as it’s hard to write something different for all the boys. What I can say is they have all finished the season in the same way, as better players whether it’s in batting, bowling or fielding. Their attitude towards the game and the spirit in which it was played and to each other as team mates has been fantastic. Thank You.

Minor Premiers and Premiers. Another great year from the boys in the U/16A competition, a season that saw us Minor Premiers and premiers in what is deemed the flagship of junior cricket. 51 Continuing on as the side to beat as a second year team and defending our previous titles in the 10A, 12A, and 14A our U/16A took on a new look with the addition of three classy players, thus making a strong side perhaps even stronger. With ten of the team second year U/16 players and the other two seasoned representatives a year younger our pre season expectations for a successful year were well justified. Rain reduced our first game to a 30 over game against our old foes Illawong. We quickly stamped our authority and their 63 was far short of being enough. Our batting thereafter took on Bradman like proportions with successive totals of 3-295, 7-265, 6-289, 5-199, 9-251, 5-203 & 2-139 (off 13 overs!) a game we lost to our Engadine Red brothers chasing an outright for club championship points (poor decision Pendo) and 5-293. A problem, albeit a good one was how to rotate our batting and keep batsmen in form whilst giving everyone a fair go, not all that easy when knocking up big scores for the loss of minimum wickets. While our batting was ferocious our bowling and fielding was only so-so. After round 8 we were two wins in front of the competition and cruising. Round 9 and 10 saw our cruise ship take on leaks in Titanic proportions with successive defeats to Caringbah and Gymea. Our 119 against Caringbah was just plain foolhardy and immature cricket with most batsmen trying to hit the cover off the ball on a big field against their spinners. From 2-89 to all out for 119 in what is considered the best batting side in the competition says it all. Gymea was just too hot on the day and their dangerous rep quick was devastating with a four-wicket haul late on the first day. It was a great bowling display and at 4-19 overnight we never pulled back, fair cop. While our batting lost its way in the final two games our bowling and fielding lifted and produced real fighting qualities in narrow defeats, it is always the hallmark of a very good side when one facet will compensate for another. Still definitely not the ideal way to approach a final. U/16A FINAL. Engadine Dragons V Illawong at Waratah. 17/03/07. No final is legitimate without its share of pre match dramas, and ours was no exception. Andrew Jones continues to find bones to break, this time his thumb, ruling him out of the opening batting position. Bryce Daenell's soccer commitments meant him going and coming through the days play. Sean Garton from our 16A Reds filled the breach well - thanks Sean. Skipper Ward whose toss/calling skills rate around a healthy 75% (for the opposition!) calls right this time to our joy, our first dig. Adam Dow who unselfishly raised his hand to open the innings with Sammy Newman falls early to a straight one, 1-5. Bryce and Sam add a solid 20 before Bryce almost belts the cover off a drive only to be snapped up in the covers, 2-25. Sam whose batting deeds have been one of our lynch pins this Summer loses his middle peg, caught on the crease, 3-33. Our rock this season Ben Marciante hooks one of the rare fours and is looking the goods until his castle is also knocked over, ouch. 4-42. Our keeper Mitchell Floyd is a hard nut and a gritty fighter tailor made for this, he digs in hard, no worries, plenty to come! Grant Johnson reaches double figures before lifting one to square leg, 5-67. Andrew Herne enters the arena. Thinking back a few months ago we were privy to his maiden century, another today Herney will do! 100 short of a ton. 6-69. At 96 Floyd misses a full toss; the ball is on line, 7-96 oh mother! Who's the terrier at the other end swinging like a gate in a gale? It's Bubbles Rice. Fielders begin to scatter, the scene is set. Mark has always liked the aerial route, more room up there perhaps. Michael Dumbrell strides to the crease, strides back one run later, 8-97. Skipper Ward's captain's knock comes to an abrupt end 9-103. Daniels addition to our ledger is the same as Michaels, Andrews and Adams, 0000- two pair of spectacles. Not much pressure on Sean batting at 11 promoted from the second side for a final! Stay with Mark at all costs comes the cry from the ever-aging coach going greyer by the minute. Bubbles' bubble is not ready to burst just yet. Finally we see some batting that has made us the scourge of all bowlers this season. One huge shot carries the longest boundary on the full, amazing. Our supporter’s cheers resemble a sell-out crowd at the M.C.G. (well almost). Finally Mark tries to make a difficult three out of an easy two from a long shot into the deep, run out for 45 magnificent runs. Sean at the other end has the red ink for 10* a great partnership of 35, giving us at least a defendable score. Cameron Heard took the decision as the non-batsman well, "that’s o.k. As long as I get a bowl” Cammy's time is very close. The start we want, 1-5 from a run out. Michael Sharkey joins Dylan Dule; their two most talented batsmen who we have played against since the first final way back in the U/10A's. Dylan appears to want an early finish, throwing the bat at everything, caught behind, 2-14, Ben's first of three wickets. Game on. Tommy Aggett is beautifully set up by skipper Ward falling to a mistimed hook for a globe, 3-18. Sharkey is still there though holding tight, a hard boy to shift. Two wickets fall, 5-32, pressure on them continues to mount. Cameron's time comes; catching a screaming one handed caught and bowled from Dylan Nash, one of their top guns. Then the break we were after. Cameron's last ball in junior 52 cricket traps Michael on the crease for an L.B.W. 6-39. A little "hey, you beauty". Heavy rain sends everyone scattering, a frustrating period. Resuming, their lower order is reduced by one when a parent suddenly informs their coach her not out batsman/son has to leave for work, perhaps a very costly decision for flipping burgers or stacking shelves? Their tail enders fight hard and ever slowly grinding out valuable runs defying us to the last. The end comes in a mix up run out off Sam Newman's bowling with his accurate left arm throw hitting the stumps. The good guys 138 and our worthy opponents all out 100. Some oddities to come from this final are: Both last wicket partnerships, our 35 and Illawong's 24 were the highest from both sides. Daniel Ward's poor average in winning the toss didn't carry on in finals, four wins in four finals, result four premierships, U/10A, U/12A, U/14A and now the flagship of junior cricket, the U/16A’s. A wonderful win, a great team of boys and families and never a better way to end junior careers for 10 of the 12 lads. Well-done team! Engadine Blue 138: (Mark Rice 45, Mitchell Floyd 17, Sam Newman 15). Defeated Illawong 100. (Ben Marciante 3-27 off 12, Cameron Heard 2-7 off 6). A short critique on the boys who will remain in junior cricket next season: SAM NEWMAN: Another good year. Opening batsman with 207 runs and 13 wickets with his left arm wrist spinners. A tough little character, he works hard on all facets of his game. Top score of 64 and took 4-10 against Illawong. Will go a long way in this sport. MARK RICE: Our little dasher. Just under 200 runs and 11 wickets. We’re never beaten until “bubbles” is out. A coach’s dream in finals. His century last season and his 45 this one helped us get there. A top score of 57, he took wickets when it counted. The boys advancing to the senior levels next season: BRYCE DAENELL: Hard hitting batsman who equalled his top score for the Dragons (that score again 87) since the U12’s. Figured in a huge partnership with Andrew Herne to decimate the Sports spinners. Totaled 184 runs. ADAM DOW: A new Dragon, Adam is great motivator who never let the opposition forget who they were playing. A real team player that compiled 161 runs normally in the middle order. Opened in the final when asked of him. Top score 54* MICHEAL DUMBRELL: A quiet achiever. Michael scored 129 with a top score of 57* with half of his innings not out. Batting anywhere asked of him but preferring the lower order where his big hitting was most valuable. Picked up 9 wickets with his mediums. MITCHELL FLOYD: Another new Dragon who’s keeping and batting skills were a great asset to the team. With a never say die approach to cricket, Mitchell scored 209 runs and snared 8 catches and 5 stumpings. His top score was 56. CAMERON HEARD: Not as many innings as he would have liked but Cameron’s job was always as our first change left arm swing bowler. His 11 wickets were at a low average. A finals specialist his 2-7 included two of their best batsman. Has kept his best now for the past four finals. ANDREW HERNE: A mixed year for Andrew. His savage hitting saw his first century 100* against the Sports hapless spinners. He finished with 180 runs and 10 wickets. Normally opened the bowling or came on first change. Always “puts in”. GRANT JOHNSON: Another new Dragon. Grant opened the batting but preferred the middle order. A classy all rounder he left most of his better deeds to the final rounds. Took 13 wickets at a low average and scored a couple of mid twenties when needed. ANDREW JONES: Andrew missed the first 3 games and final 2 games with bone breakages, unbelievable! He still managed to stamp his class with a 52 retired against Gymea’s quickest and still totalled 124 runs. Picked up a few wickets off only 2 overs. BEN MARCIANTE: Had a wonderful year. Two centuries 101 (ret), & 160 were among his total of 464 runs @ 58. If not enough he also picked up 19 wickets @ 14. Scored most runs in the competition and took equal top wickets. Took a great 3 scalps in the final to set up a win. DANIEL WARD: Our skipper elected the lower order with the bat as to rotate. Dan was our spearhead with the new ball bagging 16 wickets @ 15. He kept his best for Illawong in round 6 with 4-22, 12 overs of real fire. Top score of 26*. Daniel has been our captain from the U/10A’s. 53 OUR FEARLESS LEADER: Daniel Ward and I go way back to the U/10’s. It is imperative that the captain and coach work together in harmony and understanding, this liaison I am proud to say was never threatened. While on occasions Daniel changed things from our pre-planned tactics, it only proves the skipper has to lead from the field of play where he has the “feel” of the game at close quarters. After all his record speaks for itself, four titles for as many finals as our captain. It has been a joy working with you Dan. Thanks for mountains of great memories. Again our great support crew contributed everything required of them and more in the running of a smooth team. Steve Jones our manager, Peter Ward, Paul Johnson (PJ), Ken Newman and Craig Rice were always available to do anything required of them in the running of the team. Thanks again for everything men. On a personal note this season marks the completion of the junior level for all but two of the boys. I have been associated with the core of this team dating back to the 2000/01. It has been seven years full of great cricket, unbelievably funny moments, and it has forged wonderful friendships for Barbara and myself. Whether you play park cricket or go on to achieve test honours I will watch all your careers proudly and will follow your achievements with equal enthusiasm. Thanks again boys and parents.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Brent Woodley BOWLER: Sean Garton TEAM PLAYER: John Watson FIELDING AWARD: Christian Haynes

THE TEAM: - Jordan Duncan (Capt), Brent Woodley (V/Capt), Clinton Allen, Sean Garton, Christian Haynes, Matthew Hoff, Ben Latham, Ryan Marlow, Alex Sambuco, Brayden Sharp, Blake Sutcliffe, John Watson

Well as the 2006/07 season draws to a close the 16A Red boys can hold their heads up high as proud cricketers and fantastic sportsmen. Brought together from a combination of 14A, 16B and 16C players from the previous season, the boys were drawn a tough card, being graded in the 16A comp as the second Engadine team. Up against experienced opposition, we knew the season was going to be tough, however the association stuck firm to their grading. When the boys were told that they were in ‘A’ grade, their immediate reaction was not to complain but to accept the challenge head-on, so that is exactly what we did! Although our season was not so successful on the scoreboard, the boys were always competitive and caused some headaches for the opposition. As well as this, they formed some fantastic friendships and coaching them was hassle-free. Some of the highlights for me were not always in a game situation, but also the great times we had at training. Our attendance at training was phenomenal and we saw some great individual and team performances throughout the year on the park, capped off with our hard-fought and satisfying victory over the previously undefeated Engadine Blue team. Another highlight was our nail-biting victory over Como, which was the positive turning point in our season. It was great to see some of the lads developing their leadership skills throughout the season, and some of our losses taught the boys the importance of bowling a consistent line and length and to value their wicket. A massive thank-you must go out to our faithful supporters, who came along through thick and thin to support the team. Also, from a coaching perspective the assistance throughout the year from Phil Alterator (manager), Ian Latham, Peter Duncan and others was invaluable and ensured that the administration side of things was taken care of. I would like to mention our team members below and outline their contribution to the team. So congratulations lads for the mettle you showed in ‘A’ grade, and I look forward to seeing every one of you in Dragons colours next season!

Jordan (Jordy, JD, Jords, Dunco) Duncan © 52 runs 57.3 overs 10 wickets Av: 20.2 B.B 3/50 3 catches

Team Captain, Jordy is our equivalent of Mike Hussey – Mr. Cricket! Although he didn’t have the greatest year on the scoreboard, and was hampered at times by injuries, this season in the 16A’s benefited him immeasurably. He earned the respect of his team-mates and worked hard in every game. Two of his three catches were screamers, with the most important being his reflex catch against Como. His bowling was among the most consistent in the team, and he dismissed some of the Shire’s best young batsmen throughout the year. Well done mate!

Brent Woodley (vc) 223 runs H.S 60 Av: 15.92 15 overs B.B 1/7 2 catches

Brent was a fantastic asset to the team this year. As a hard-hitting wicket-keeper batsman, he started off the year batting the only way he knew how, slogging. This paid off once or twice, but we knew his innings weren’t going to last for all that long. However, an opportunity to lead the team brought with it extra responsibility, and Brent began to value his wicket. To everyone’s surprise, he began respecting the good balls and building an innings rather than trying to make it happen immediately. His innings of 60 against Engadine Blue can be described in one word, “dominating”, and it was this innings that won us the game. His power did not go away, however, because in just one over against Gymea, Brent hit 16 off one of the competition’s best bowlers, on one occasion losing the ball on the Princes Hwy at Waratah. His total of 44* in this game was achieved in just 19 minutes! Brent is an excellent cricketer and is well-placed for the transition to men’s next year.

Clinton Allen 65 runs H.S 26 29 overs 4 wickets B.B 3/12 2 catches

First of all, what a great bloke to have in your team! Juggling representative footy commitments, Clinton made an awesome effort to make himself available this season, and weren’t we grateful when he did! A solid middle-order batsman and reliable bowler, Clinton was one of the only players in the team who kept the ball consistently straight! The highlight of Clinton’s season was probably his bowling effort against Como, where his figures of 3-12 helped to clinch our first victory. He was also a solid fieldsmen, with not much getting past him. It will be great to see you in Dragons colours again next year champ!

Sean Garton 109 runs H.S 23 73 overs 13 wickets Av: 26.3 B.B 4/47 5 catches

Sean improved out of sight as a cricketer this season! As a top order batsman and lethal spin bowler, his year in the 16A’s will do him the world of good for next season. Coming into the team as a relative unknown, Sean immediately impressed with his obvious love for the game, as well as his energy and enthusiasm at training. More often than not Sean was the winner of our training games, and worked hard all year. Sean always looked solid with the bat, and his season aggregate does not reflect his ability. In this area, he needs to work on respecting the good ball and avoiding premeditated shots. His bowling, however, was the area which showed the biggest improvement. At the start of the season the batsmen were given too many loose balls to hit away, yet to his credit Sean worked diligently on improving his length. By the end of the season, his economy had improved phenomenally and every ball looked like it would take a wicket. Be proud of your efforts this year mate, you have done well!

Christian (Haynesy, Magnet) Haynes 44 runs H.S 15 48 overs 3 wickets 11 catches

Another great bloke we had in our team this year was Christian Haynes. Although he didn’t say much on the field, he let his actions do the talking. Now the highlight of Christian’s season was not so much his batting or bowling (although these were quite good also!), but his uncanny ability to attract the batsmen to hit catches to him! After each game, if Christian hadn’t taken a catch something was wrong! At the fall of these wickets, his teammates were left shaking their heads. On one occasion the batsmen was dropped to quite a simple chance, and the very next ball went straight down Christian’s throat! As a lower order batsman he didn’t score too many runs, although his boundary against Engadine Blue was perhaps the most important shot of the season, finding the gap between third man and fine leg! He has a very natural bowling technique, and if he can maintain his consistency he will develop into a very fine bowler! Well done mate.

55 Matthew (Hoffy, Hospital) Hoff 103 runs H.S 25 40 overs 5 wickets B.B 3/25 1 catch

An experienced U16 campaigner, Hoffy’s season was probably not as successful as he would have liked. A hard-hitting and gifted timer of the ball, Matt came in lower in the order and got himself off to a start on every occasion. However, his tendency to get out playing across the line prevented him from amassing the amount of runs he is capable of. However, he is the proud recipient of ‘shot of the season’ – an immaculately timed lofted on-drive off Wardy which bounced once before disappearing from the Woronora Heights playing field. He also won our training tournament, hitting 72 runs from 4 overs on small Anzac (we were playing 6’s!). Matt’s bowling is consistent, although he needs to concentrate on pitching the ball up! Good luck in mens Hoffy!

Ben Latham 131 runs H.S 22 5 overs 3 wickets B.B 1/9 4 catches Ben’s season was perhaps not as good statistically as he would have liked, although like the others, his experience in the 16A’s will benefit him immeasurably. Probably the most technically correct batsman in the team, Ben was asked to bat in a number of pressure situations, although he would often get himself out after doing all the hard work. He played some cracking shots throughout the season, with his favourite being the bottom-hand jab to mid-wicket. Solid in the field, not much got past Ben, and he was often placed in first-slip by his captain. It was great to see Ben pick up a couple of wickets during the year, although he needs to PITCH IT UP! Best wishes for mens next year Benny!

Ryan Marlow 145 runs H.S 40 74.1 overs 9 wickets B.B 3/24 3 catches

As an established ‘A’ grade player, Ryan found the transition to 16A’s a challenge. A technically sound batsman, Ryan often found himself back in the pavilion before he had troubled the scorers too much, a fact that troubled both him and his coach. To alleviate this problem, Ryan spent a lot of time training and concentrating on not wasting his wicket with silly shots, and as a result he played some fantastic innings in the second half of the season. His innings of 40 against Caringbah showed determination, as did his partnership with Brent against Engadine Blue. His bowling was always consistent, although he does need to concentrate on variation to unsettle opposition batsmen. Like some others, Ryan lives and breathes cricket in the Summer, and his enthusiasm and dedication made him a pleasure to coach.

Alex (Bucco) Sambuco 95 runs H.S 30 7 overs 1 wicket 2 catches

Bucco’s season was perhaps not as productive as he would have liked, although like everyone else his season in the 16A’s will do him the world of good. With the bowling a lot straighter than what he would have faced in previous seasons, Alex struggled a little bit to play his natural game, although when he connected BOY did he connect! The look on the face of the Illawong opening bowler was priceless when Alex smacked one back past him to the boundary! To reach his significant ability, Alex needs to build his innings and avoid premeditated shots by respecting the good balls. If he can do this, he will develop into a fine batsman. Best wishes in mens next year Bucco!

Brayden (Braydo) Sharp 34 runs H.S 8 12 overs 2 wickets

Although his season was cut short by work commitments, Braydo was a great asset to the team this season. Unfazed by any opposition, Braydo frustrated bowlers by his rock-solid defence. Projected to opener mid-way through the season worked a treat, with Braydo seeing off the new ball on almost every occasion. His bowling is also deceptive and accurate, and he was unlucky not to pick up more wickets. Well done mate!

Blake (Kenny) Sutcliffe 29 runs H.S 8 28 overs 2 wickets 1 catch

As one of the youngest players in the team, Kenny found the going a bit tough this season but to his credit he kept working hard and never gave up. Perhaps overawed a little by the opposition, Kenny struggled a little bit with his line and length, although his bowling in the last game against Caringbah was back to the Kenny we have come to expect, accurate and deceptive! A quiet achiever with the bat, he showed immeasurable improvement this year, often called upon by his coach to bat high in the order during pressure situations. His defensive strokes are amongst the most technically correct in the team, and he knows how to respect a good ball! Kenny was no easy wicket for the opposition, they always 56 had to work hard! Kenny has another year in the 16’s which will help him to develop into a strong and consistent cricketer!

John (Johnny, Trotson) Watson 60 runs H.S 17 78.3 overs 7 wickets B.B 1/4 2 catches

As one of the younger players coming up from the 14A’s, wickets and runs were hard to come by for Johnny this year. As one of our opening bowlers, John was always aggressive and dangerous with the new ball, and bowled some fantastically economical spells throughout the season. Like Ryan, John also needs to work on variation in his bowling to continue being a lethal wicket-taker. His batting was always solid, and consequently he was asked to open our innings on a number of occasions. His batting in the death against Engadine Blue was exciting to watch, and his boundaries helped to get us over the line.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Jason Gilmore BOWLER: Daniel Tench MOST CONSISTENT: Dean McMillan FIELDING AWARD: Jeremy Forshaw ALL ROUNDER: Dean McMillan ALL ROUNDER: Daniel Tench

THE TEAM: - Michael Bedford, David Bell, Anthony Crisafulli, Daniel Dwyer, Ryan Emerson, Jeremy Forshaw, Matthew Fraser, Jason Gilmore, Dean McMillan, Russell Meyer, Bradley Price, Daniel Tench, Daniel Walsh

The boys were a formidable side all year and this was a result of the hard work they put in at training. Though going all the way to the final to be outplayed by Caringbah, the boys should take credit for the manner in which they played all season. The most memorable match was during round 9 when we needed to win both our last matches including one of them outright and in this particular game against Illawong the boys managed to get the outright on the last ball of the game. After rushing to get the last 3 wickets within 15 minutes to allow us time to bat, the boys managed to get the 22 runs to win in 3 overs and with 2 runs needed off the last two balls a wicket fell and Bedi ended up smashing the last ball for 3 to get us over the line. Overall though each and every player contributed to the team’s success and all should walk away knowing they are better cricketers for it. JASON (HAPPY) GILMORE: In only his second year, the coaches for some reason decided to nominate him co-captain along with Dean. He led from the front opening the bat and during the season taking over wicket keeper duties. He was our highest run scorer and his blazing style of batting ensured we consistently got off to good starts. DEAN ( DEANO) MCMILLAN: Along with Happy, Dean showed he was true value to the team leading with vast experience and a great cricketing brain as well as scoring three 50’s as well as taking 21 wickets. Dean should be most impressed with his bowling where he had never bowled regularly to taking on the new ball. MICHAEL ( BEDI) BEDFORD: Another intelligent cricketer in the side, Bedi was unplayable with his very controlled off and leg spin. Also very technically correct batsman, Bedi would have been disappointed with his lackluster efforts with the bat but he certainly made up for it in the field and with the ball. His most outstanding efforts came when we needed it most, well that was twice, firstly in the aforementioned last ball outright victory then again in the final when in his first spell bowled 8 overs for a measly 1 run. DAVID BELL: Playing in only his first season David showed he had the ability to play the game. He impressed immediately with his ability to bowl decent medium fast deliveries and also being handy with the bat when scoring a 50 against Caringbah. David bowled exceptionally well all year and with more practice could become a quality player. ANTHONY CRISAFULLI: Anthony was one of our standout fielders. He continuously was throwing himself around in the field and cutting off runs. Hard work at training saw him improve all round and 57 became a handy bowling option. In the final when defeat looked probable, Anthony gave everyone something to cheer about when he cleared the ropes with a big hit. DANIEL DWYER: Daniel worked hard at training all year and he was very impressive with his ability to catch anything at training but was unfortunate not to take that form into the game. He was also very impressive with the way in which he improved his bowling which was the result of hard work at training, good work Daniel. RYAN (EMO) EMERSON: Another rookie in the team and all those years of baseball made him a demon outfielder. Not only was he a very tidy fielder but he showed a lot of promise with the bat and is very technically correct. He had a few good knocks and this prompted him to become our number 3. My only tip is to not bowl side arm, it doesn’t always go straight ok! Great season mate. MATT FRASER: Bowled very consistently all year and his accurate bowling reaped with rewards when he bagged a hat trick in the opening rounds. Another person who consistently showed up to training and the hard work paid off. Also during the season Matt was called up to play for the A side and he apparently performed well there so he should be pleased with his efforts this season. JEREMY FORSHAW: Well his big mouth always came in handy when he annoyed the hell out of opposition batsmen. Jeremy could talk the talk and for his own sake could walk the walk, scored heaps of runs and took heaps of wickets as well as having the safest pair of hands. Jeremy is a fine all round player who will have a massive head after reading this wrap on himself. Great effort this year. RUSSELL MEYER: Russell was another excellent fielder and was also handy with the bat and ball. Like Anthony, Russell continuously fielded well and stopped many runs and was a safe ground fielder. Some work on his catching and he could be a force in the field. He also showed signs that his batting was coming along and his continuous efforts at training resulted in his improvement over the season. BRAD (PRICEY) PRICE: Brad has a good batting technique and could block out any attack. His most outstanding performance was his rearguard 23 in the final which brought some hope back into the side where he played out most of the overs to try and steer the side to victory. His bowling and fielding were also decent and with a bit more practice Brad could become a handy cricketer. DANIEL (TENCHY) TENCH: Daniel was a class bowler all year traumatising batsmen with his sheer pace and bounce. He was intimidating and at times unplayable and this resulted in him being the top wicket taker and our front line bowler. He was pretty handy with the bat as well making the highest score for the side with an 81 in the second round. DANIEL (WALSHY) WALSH: Daniel had a good year all round taking a few wickets and making a few runs at the bottom of the order. Walshy worked hard at training and his fielding came on really well with a great improvement in his catching. He was a great bloke to coach - good work Walshy.

THE TEAM: - Colin Berry, Greg Brosens, Greg Heffernan, Glen Hickey, Andrew Kelly, Greg Knowles, Chris Lake. Drew Lake (Capt), Adam Logan, Ben Marciante, Chris Reeves, Matt Sambuco, Rob Smith, Will Wooster

I would like to thank everyone in the team for a great year. I enjoyed the season and I hope everyone else did as well. Everyone contributed well throughout the year and if we all could become a little more consistent I believe that next year we can go all the way. This year we had a few guys come back who haven’t played for a while, a few part timers and the regulars from last season. When we had our strongest team on the field we were pretty hard to beat. Which we proved by making the final. I would like to thank David McMillan and Mitch Davis from the B2’s Andrew Jones, Andrew Herne, Mark Rice, Alex Sambuco, Dean McMillan from the 16's and Hayden Smith for helping us out throughout the year.

I would like to give a special thank you to Colin Berry whose task it was to organize the side every week. Which was no easy task when out of all of the six teams below us in the club only two guys put their hands up for one game. Thank you Colin.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Stewart Vella BOWLER: Stewart Vella ALL ROUNDER: Stewart Vella

THE TEAM: - Nathan Alterator (Capt), Mark Rice, David McMillan, Scott Wimble, James Stone, Jeremy Vickers, Joel Manns, James Galbraith, Mark Mitchell, Dane Logan, Matthew Carroll, Mitchell Davis, Brennan James, Stewart Vella, Daniel Harkins

All in all it was a good year. We finished the season as Minor Premiers and it would have been a great year if we had won the final. The team was a mix of youth and experience and the combination seemed to work quite well. Bowling was always the team strength and we managed to roll teams for very small totals on three occasions, and get the runs for outright victories. Our batting was solid at the start of the year, but fell away. I believe we just got into the habit of relying on Stewart to get us over the line. Stewart had an exceptional year with both the bat and ball. Scoring two 150’s and finishing the year with 903 runs. With the ball he was equally menacing taking a total of 30 wickets at an average just over 11. Throughout the year the team was always sharp in the field and there were a number of great run outs, the most memorable being Mitchell Davis’s at Anzac. Other great performances throughout the year were Matt Carroll, 29 wickets and James Stone first 50 in men’s cricket, and I am sure there are more of them to come. Other notable achievements included Joel Manns’ bowling in the final, scoring over 300 against Heathcote and then rolling them for 33 and 66, Bubbles’ classic catch at silly mid-on, Mitch’s big hits into the atmosphere and Dane Logan’s inaugural season as Kit Manager, easily eclipsing the (low) benchmark set the previous season by Kenno. Accolades must also go to Flash for his single-handed demolition of the golf tournament, slightly edging out the challenge by Nato and Vickers. I must say a public thank you here to Galby for organising this event – not an easy thing to do! Well done lads!

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Spencer White BOWLER: Nabeel Chaudhry ALL ROUNDER: Lee Bailey ALL ROUNDER: Jonathan Wright

THE TEAM: - Wade Horsnell (Capt), Rob Knight, Ryan Salakas, Lee Bailey, Jonathan Wright, Stuart Slack, Michael Smith, Spencer White, Tom Teuma, Peter O’Reilly, Ryan Bird, Nabeel Chaudhry, Jeffrey Fiess, Michael Ibbotson, Clive Beardow, Geoff Morriss

There were about half a dozen new faces in the side this season bringing experience and class to the team that already had an abundance of skill anyway. Wado continued his reign as skipper with Robert Knight (Mr Cricket) his deputy. We started the season pretty optimistic about our chances of taking the title simply because we had all bases covered in terms of all-round ability, but obviously the hard work still had to be done. Our Round 1 performance was a big confidence booster, absolutely ripping the heart out of the Loftus top order after they batted first in a rain reduced 30 over aside match. Loftus started OK but their innings soon stagnated rather rapidly with debutant Nebeel (Monty Panesar) Chaudhry skittling the opposition snaring 8/18 in a heroic display in dismissing them for a moderate 110. That score was never going to be enough on a smallish field at Heathcote with us cruising to a 9 wicket win with another of the debutants S C Slack making 51 not out (yes you heard it right) and wicket keeper batsman Joff making a solid 46. We managed to win our first 5 out of 6 games to put us on top by as many as 13 at one stage but unfortunately our second half of the season wasn’t as successful only winning 2 of our last 6 with a draw in the middle of that. Still finishing 2nd at the end of the final round wasn’t too bad as long as we made the semis to give ourselves a chance to win. We played St Pats in the semis with our head to head for the season at 1 apiece. Wado won the toss and batted, but after about 7 overs Captain Horsnell was dead set wishing that what he was watching was some sort of bad dream because we were 4/15 then 5/31, in extreme strife, while St Pats were organising which one of them was hosting the party that night. A couple of the early wickets that we lost were rather unlucky. Firstly with Stuart’s dismissal skying a pull shot in the first over out caught which looked to be a no ball with the bowler over stepping and then Joff extremely unlucky with the ball swinging late and taking the edge when replays showed he was no where near it. Wade joined his good mate Spencer in the centre needing to consolidate to give us any hope of posting a decent total. Spencer’s net session during the week leading up to the match was nothing short of abysmal, getting cleaned bowled numerous times. Mind you big Stu was nipping them around everywhere with an oldish ball so you could hardly blame him getting out, the other boys bowled OK as well. Can you believe we made 7/237 with the out of form Spence making 129no his highest score? What a match to do it in an extraordinary partnership with Wade worth 80 odd. Nabeel chipped in with 30 odd to give us the total. Spence’s innings was one of concentration, skill and determination which got him to his landmark along with extreme power. He hit the ball as clean as a whistle on most occasions with spectators and motor vehicles being in danger when ever the ball protruded into the air. I’m led to believe he was the recipient of an awesome massage on the morning of his innings and congrats must go out to the deliverer of that massage it must have loosened him up no end. Day 2. We weren’t out there too long at all dismissing them for a score of 69 with Tommy the pick of the bowlers taking 4, well supported by our tireless skipper Wado while Bails and Monty bowled well also. The Final Caringbah, who finished Minor Premiers was our opponent in the decider. They beat us both times during the season but we certainly didn’t play as well as we could have in those 2 clashes. Once again we won the toss and batted although I think Wado needed a week to think about it after the events of our semi final. Our openers Stu and Joff got off to a slightly better start than the previous week with a wicket not falling until the 6th over that of the big man for 5 caught at cover and what a screamer it was, full width to his left plucking it out of the air. Unfortunately Joff followed soon after for 2, caught behind, with once again replays showing he was nowhere near it. 60

I must say our opening partnerships in the early rounds were excellent, batting for 12 to 15 overs and getting the team off to good starts, but both struggled to put the big runs on the board in the second half of the year. Getting back to the match, again early wickets cost us and at drinks we were 5 for about 40 odd. Spencer again came out and looked good but unfortunately hit one on the splice and got caught for 26 from memory. Our highlight from the batting department was certainly Tubba and Robbie’s 9th wicket partnership of 37 which gave us all some encouragement watching from the sidelines. Robbie was out caught behind for 16 and quite clearly didn’t hit it and boy did he erupt letting the umpire know what he thought of the decision in more ways than one. It was a side that I hadn’t seen to Robbie but that’s understandable because he is never normally in those situations with the bat. We were all out 117 which gave us at least a chance when it looked like 70 was going to be the target. We bowled 12 overs at them before stumps finishing at 2/23 and unlucky not to have a couple more. Day2 - They batted well, to their credit and didn’t loose a wicket until they were about 20 shy of the runs. Our bowlers tried their guts out bowling a good line and length, without any luck. Robbie came on and bowled very well taking 2 late scalps with 12 to win but it wasn’t quite enough with Caringbah winning by 6 wickets. Man of the match went to Robbie for his good innings and couple of wickets. Well done guys, great year, this result just makes us hungrier than ever for next year. To Bails, who wanted me to mention him - sorry mate I tried but you know you were an important cog in the team. Get that damn run up sorted out and you might take more wickets. Next year is your turn to fire with the bat. Awards Our player of the year went to Joff with his batting scoring 240 runs and great keeping with around 21 dismissals being a major influence to us making the final. Rookie of the year Nabeel was the recipient of this one taking 25 wickets including hauls of 8/18 and 6/35 in 2 games this year doesn’t say much though for the other games. His batting was quite elegant at times with that sub continent look about it playing same handy innings throughout the year. Catch of the year Ibbo took these honours taking an absolute screamer at Heathcote in the early rounds which left us all clutching at straws trying to figure out how on earth he got to it. Well that’s about all from me guys this was a brief summary of the season played there were obviously other moments of excitement through the year that just cannot be written in this letter.

B4 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Brett Adams BOWLER: Michael Turner

THE TEAM: - Brett Findley (Capt), Paul Waddell, Brett Adams, Matt Witney, Michael Turner, Graham Price, Greg Betts, Lance Cochrane, Daniel Slade, Beau Knowles, Michael Daly, Dylan Andrews, Richard Katon, Damien Collins We had a season of ups and downs but any season where you come equal second and make the semi finals has to be reasonably good. But before I get into the season I need to thank a couple of people for their help this season. Paul Waddell - Every club has players that make the club operate. It was true of Kenthurst CC where I've spent most of my time playing and it's true of the Dragons. Wal is one of those guys. This season he carried the kit nearly every game, represented the B4s at more meetings than I did and did most of the paper work for the team. There is no doubt I couldn't have captain this year without him. Graham Price - There were only 2 games during the season that I had to stand players down, in fact, more often than not I was begging for players or playing one man down. There was only one guy who was available every game and that was Pricee. 61 Brett Adams - I was unavailable for one game and Hubba stepped up to captain the team (to a courageous loss.) Beau Knowles - For generally being there; for counsel on the local rules, the club, the players or whatever I needed. Greg Betts - For picking up the newsletters (most of the time). Now to the cricket.... Generally speaking we had a great year with the ball and in the field. There were a number of outstanding performances from our bowlers. Mick Turner picked up a "5 for" on three occasions although the best individual match figures of the season went to Wal with 5/16 vs Illawong. Matt Whitney and Beau Knowles rounded out the main attack for the year with Mick Daly providing good leg spin support for half the season. The main surprise with the ball for the season was Richard Katon with a match winning 4-36 in his first spell for the year in round 10. In addition to the 4 x 5 wicket hauls there were 2 x 4 wickets and 6 x 3 wicket hauls for the year - well done to the guys who got amongst the wickets. We also held most of our catches this season and made some key run-outs. Without tallying the results for most catches I have to commend Dylan Andrews for having the most reliable hands. I can't think of any he put down and I can remember a number he made look very easy fielding in his standard covers position. Having said this I think the catch of the season would have to go to Greg Betts for a diving "blinder" he took in a loosing game against St Pats in round 4. Where bowling was our strength for the year, unfortunately batting was the weakness. We had a couple of abysmal results with the bat - starting with round 1 where we were bowled out (by the to-be premiers) for 41. Mmmmm not a good start. However, to have made the semis we must have improved. Our top team score for the year was 273 in round 4 vs Miranda RSL. We also had 6 players score 50 at least once for the year (Dylan Andrews - 69, 58 &50* ; Brett Adams - 57 ; Beau Knowles - 59 ; Richard Katon - 75 ; Brett Findley - 65 ; Mark McManus - 54 & 50). On many occasions the tail wagged for us with Paul Waddell, Mick Turner and Greg Betts all providing solid runs during the year at the end of our innings. In a season of ups and downs there has to be the odd great result and the odd bad one. For us the best result for the year was round 10 vs Miranda RSL. We batted first and were in all sorts of trouble early on at 4 for not much. Mark McManus stabilised the innings with a 50 and was very well supported by Brett Adams batting unusually low in the order with 33*. We did remarkable well to recover to finish 8/137. However this was unlikely to be enough on the “ball destroying” pitch at Sutherland No 2. With the normal strike bowlers not making a significant dent in the order it was left to an unlikely 4-35 from Richard Katon and a solid 3-35 (after 2 forgettable overs) from Mick Daly to rip through their line up. Mark McManus chipped in with the wicket of their best batsman and Beau Knowles came back to rifle on through their last batsman to seal a great win for the boys with a handful of runs to spare. On the flip side our lowest moment (apart from the games we only scored 42 and 70) was an agonising loss a Sutherland No 2. After losing the toss we were forced to chase a ragged ball around for 245 runs against Caringbah Sports Inn. Mick Whitney and Mick Turner bowled valiantly to each return 3 but on a stinking hot day on Sutherland it was always going to be hard work. We batted second in the 1-dayer and started well with a solid partnership from yours truly (65) and Dylan Andrews (58) setting us up for a great run chase. The lower order fought hard but a fantastic lower order 43* from Wal Waddell was not quite enough with the game ending on the last ball with us all out for 242 - just 3 runs short. I think we spent about 45 minutes checking the books for the scoring mistake that *had* to be there. Unfortunately it wasn't. Every player in the team contributed to our success this season - whether it was some of the performances mentioned above; the valuable lower order runs that got us across the line; the solid “handful” in a match winning partnership of 60-something; the figures of "1 for" that made the much needed break though, or the steady hands in the field that took the catch when we had no runs to play with. In all it was a very enjoyable season for me and I would like to thank everyone in the team for the opportunity to captain them. I look forward to the end of season trip and going a couple better in 2007/8.

B6 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Stuart Dibb BOWLER: Tim Russell ALL ROUNDER: Tim Russell

THE TEAM: - Stuart Dibb (Capt), Nathan Dibb, Tim Russell, Sam Russell, Bradley Dewar, Stewart Lumsden, James Andrew, Dean Griffith, Leighton Wright, Troy Abbot, Ken Hyde, Andrew Hyde, Chris Jackson, Blake Cole, Chris Moreland One-day boys we will win a comp. Luck will favour us soon. We started the season with a bang, annihilating arch-rivals St Pats, but ended the season with a massive let down. After coming close last season, losing the final, we lost the semi final this year to the eventual premiers, after leading the points table the whole year until the last round when Miranda won outright on our duty round to leap frog us into 1st place. With pretty much the same side as last year, with Dr Jones and that bloke called A.P.E Turvey not playing, we picked up Turkey’s husband tricky Troy Abbott, virgin cricketer Blake Cole and we made room in the salary cap for star off season signing Chris Moreland. Also a change of captain with the last captain having a heartilage injury, commonly diagnosed as pea heart syndrome, meant Dibby was the captain for the first time in his career. With all the boys starting to go through the phase from teenage life to adulthood, many issues arose from this. Such issues such as alcohol use and gambling were issues. As well as the issue of activities the night before a game, with over half the team having a missus. This last issue was the most interesting, providing mixed results throughout the season. With some players you could tell more easily than others. This topic was a point of discussion between players down at Scylla Bay, and provided very interesting feedback throughout the season. I think Timmy Russell was the most successful the day after though. Timothy ‘Showbags, Brother of Sam & Matt’ Russell Was the top player for us this year, taking most wickets and making 2nd most runs. But enough about that. This is probably because he had a very high sugar intake before the games. He was definitely the biggest pest of the team, and he doesn’t like the fact that he is the only Russell boy not to hit a century, but he will tell you otherwise. Timmy was the former captain, and if you read last years report, you could sense a little bit of jealousy about a certain player. It’s alright though, he can’t control this, as this jealousy has been around since these two meet in Year 2 at Marton Public. All jokes aside, he can be a decent bloke if he puts his mind and 100% concentration to it. In about 10 years time, you will probably hardly see him, as he will be retired, living off Monique. James “Jimmy, Jim-Jim’ Andrew This kid can field, can bat, and can occasionally bowl, but not at Loftus Oval. Was our Andrew Symonds at cover, with the opposition always struggling to get the ball past him. He did get his maiden half-ton at Gwawley East this year, thus cementing a spot up the top of the order. Jimmy provided two of the funniest incidents ever seen at a cricket game this year. The first one was round 2 at Gwawley West, when he fell out of that tree on to the garbage bin holder, luckily not ending up in intensive care. The second incident was in round 5 at Canberra Street, when talking about birthday parties he attended when younger. He tried telling the boys how much he loved getting ‘franga’s’ at parties. With everyone wondering what he was going on about, he corrected himself and said frankfurts, but did provide a very funny conversation afterwards. Stewart ‘Stewy, Dominic Thornely’s best mate’ Lumsden Had a solid year with the bat being our 4th highest scorer. Had a top score of 61 at Boystown off about 25 balls. He was handy with the ball, getting wickets towards the end of the year with his quick balls off a short run up. Season highlight would have to be that over of 14 balls at Canberra St, closely followed by the way he turned up to play 15 minutes late against Heathcote, in the 1st game back after the Christmas break, after a wild and restless night down the ‘Burgh. His biggest ambition would have to be to beat Dibby in the total runs made in the year. He thrives on the rivalry that these two have. Ken ‘Kenny’ Hyde Blossomed with the bat this year, often being the only player to hit runs in an innings. He moved up and down the batting order, mainly opening in Adam Gilchrist fashion. He was the 3rd highest run scorer for the year with a highest score of 46, but regularly made decent starts. He was a top mid-on stopping and catching everything that went his way. Kenny loved encouraging the bowlers and getting 63 under the batters skin. In 10 years time, you will regularly see him on Fox 8 or ESPN playing poker, earning millions each week. Stuart ‘Dibby, Dibey’ Dibb Dibby was the captain for the first time in his career, and from all reports, was better than the previous one. There are some myths about this player circulating the team. No, he did not write a letter to the Engadine District News last season with a picture of himself with a larger head on it. The player who started this rumour is jealous. The other myth that he likes the closeness in the team and compares it to Brokeback Mountain sort of closeness, is also false. Dibby’s favourite hobby is beating Stew at whatever game or challenge they have. He doesn’t go looking for the challenge, he just happens to get involved, because Stew lifts to another level when playing him, and Dibby doesn’t want to lose to him. Chris ‘Jacko’ Jackson Jacko was one of our most consistent bowlers this year, having the lowest average and best strike rate out of the team. He was regularly picking up 2, 3, 4 wicket hauls, with his best being 5/20 against Illawong. He was a great team player, always moving up and down the order wherever the team needed him, and driving players to Sutherland Hospital whenever required. Did a magnificent summersault pirouette with half pike whilst trying to stop a pretty firm cut shot one day at Gwawley West. It might of hurt, but it did look good. Nathan ‘Clarkey’ Dibb Some people say he is the better of the Dibb brothers. But the captain definitely disagrees. Nathan was unlucky to miss the semi final this year, doing nothing wrong. He would have to be the best square leg in the business, catching any full-blooded pull or hook shot that comes his way. He also did pick up his maiden wicket this year, against the team that ended up winning the comp. He has got a strong technique whilst batting, a bit like Jason Gillespie, often leaving the fielding side very frustrated. Just like Jason Gillespie Nath, you’ll hit a decent score pretty soon. Leighton ‘Laytona, Hewitt’ Wright To put it simply, this kid is a freak. Most people would think that he couldn’t surprise us anymore with his bag of tricks, but every season brings in new skills for Leighton to show his team-mates and the opposition. Whether it is catching any ball that comes his way with his bucket hands, or hitting a straight drive off his pads by hitting it between his legs, Leighton can do it all. Leighton played a few handy knocks in the year with his best being 28 n/o against St Pats, and putting a good 60 run partnership to help the team to a good score. He was also the highest catch taker this year, usually in gully or at point. There are rumours around he might be the first white man to play with the Harlem Globe Trotters, because he is that good Chris Moreland It was Chris’ first season playing men’s with us, and his experience was very valuable. He did a good job with the gloves behind the stumps, taking 11 catches (although he thinks its 12) and often added vital runs down the order when needed. He added to the team camaraderie with his custom groping and grabbing during a wicket celebration, and his willingness to show parts of his body to the team, much to Abbott’s delight. His season highlight would have to be when he got 3 ducks in a row, with 2 of them being goldens. From all reports, he doesn’t mind drinking a few breezers up the pub on a Friday night. Brad ‘Belta, Big Man’ Dewar Belta’s season was cut short due to uni commitments and a little cut that he sustained on his finger whilst fielding against Caringbah at Kareela earlier in the season. Only joking mate, the injury was very impressive and if someone had thought quickly enough, we should have had a photo of it. But the captain, being a mean bloke that he is, is still disappointed that you didn’t take that catch off his bowling. Sam Russell Sammy had a great, but sometimes unlucky year. He and Hydey had a great combination with the shiny red platypus. Although Sam did not take a great number of wickets, his accurate bowling really tied down the opposition at times and probably helped Hydey at the other end pick up a few scalps. He started off the year with a bang, hitting an unbeaten 56, and getting us out of trouble against St Pats, and followed it up with 2 more scores, which were our highest scores both times. Sam got the opportunity to captain the side when the captain was living the high-life in the Pacific. We won that game comprehensively and there were calls from some (mainly Nathan Dibb) for Sam to replace the current captain, as they felt he would do a much better job and put a certain batter from 11 to 3, which the current captain wouldn’t have a bar of. 64

Blake ‘Chopper’ Cole It was Blake’s first time playing cricket, and enjoyed every bit of it. Blake proved to be a good recruit, adding to the field, either being quick on his feet at mid-wicket or taking good catches in the deep, and adding quick runs at the end of an innings. He added humour to the field with his interactive commentary with the batsmen, and added to the team spirit off the field, providing the boys with lots of laughs with words and lines you could never imagine being said. It was good to see that he lost his virginity in our last game of the year, claiming his first career wicket against one of the comp’s top batsmen who played for the eventual premiers. Hope to see you playing next season buddy. Troy ‘Boat, Bow-at, Boaty Boy, Bott, Botswana, CB’ Abbott Abbott was playing cricket for the first time in 4 years, and the fact that it was a new captain and he really dislikes the previous captain has got nothing to do with his return to the game. Being a part- timer, boaty boy didn’t get many opportunities to impress, but when he did play, he was a standout performer. What signifies his brilliance is the fact that he batted against the eventual premiers and runners-up throughout the year, and remained not out both times. He also always put his body on the line when fielding and took great catches through out the year, 2 of them in the same game. He sends chills through the opposition when they see him turn up to the game in his shiny red car, making them think that he is some kind of superstar. Dean ‘Deano, Dribbler’ Griffith Deano was in and out of our side throughout the year, but when he was there, I think we won most games. He provided plenty of enthusiasm in the field and good laughs for the team, because he is a battler, but a good bloke. Deano probably bowled the spell of the season when taking 4-26 off 9 against the minor premiers, and probably won the game for us with his left-arm round arm style, when they were 0/126 off 28 chasing 187. He struggled with the bat but that’s always been the case. See you next season, or probably before that at Woolies, or at any of Engadine’s licensed premise’s any day of the week, and Deano, please wear the same shoes to a game, not 1 jogger and 1 skate shoe. Andrew ‘Hydey’ Hyde Hydey was our express, down-wind opening bowler, never taking a backward step. Hydey was from the old Mervyn Hughes school of opening bowler; letting the batter know how he was playing and what he thought of him, and huffing and puffing at anything that slightly didn’t go his way. Hydey took the second most wickets for us this year. His best innings of the year would have been going for quick runs against Heathcote, when he hit 22 off about 6 balls, hitting the ball into the streets of Sylvania. He is a big chance to represent the Australian Army cricket side against a foreign side within the next 10 years, probably the East Timor Invitational XI. Thanks to all the committee for their efforts during the year. A special thanks to Craig Rice for his help during the season, it was a big help. The club is easily the best in shire, and it is no wonder when you see everyone’s effort and the work that they put in, especially behind the scenes. A special mention to the Hyde boys, Leighton and Jacko for taking the kit to games, training and home during the year. It was a massive help and was something less for the captain to worry about. Also thank-you to all the parents, girlfriends, friends and Turkey for their attendance at games, and help and support during the year, either being lifts to the game or making lunches for the boys to take. A special mention to that great sort that bought ice blocks for all the boys on that hot afternoon against Illawong. Whoever your boyfriend is, he is a lucky bloke. I hope to see you all next year, fighting fit and healthy, and staying out of trouble during the off-season.

A good bunch of blokes too!! The final as a total game, whilst not as intense with the commitment, none the less still a fantastic effort by the team against Aquinas, whom I might add, demolished us in all three previous games throughout the season. So it was only fitting we returned the compliment in the only game that really mattered. Just to remind all, the Dragons scored 7 –225 off 60 overs after being invited to bat by the Minor Premiers. Glenn Caukill (79) top scored, ably assisted by Ian Mitchell (38) and Jaryd Duncan (36no). Matt Russell (24), Paul Dixon (15) and Tim Martin (15) whilst not big scorers managed to see off the new ball and frustrate their attack for the late onslaught. When it came to bowl, good bowling by Reece (4 – 40), Ian (3 –21) and Paul (2 –2) stifled their “gun” batsman to the point of only conceding five boundaries in 43 overs (The Dragons scored 25 off 60 overs) and rolled them all out 121.A truly marvelous effort. Catches went to Rowan, Brad Young and Ian (who took a fantastic caught and bowled) plus Rowan had a colossal run out of their “class” opener. Jaryd also achieved a classic stumping of their last batsman off Paul’s medium pace bowling to seal the victory.

TO SUMMARISE THE SEASON : - It was a bit up and down throughout three rounds of games (a five team comp). We achieved three outright wins, four 1st Innings wins, five 1st innings losses, three duty rounds and Captain’s points for a total of 83 points to finish in second place. On behalf of the team, as Captain, I would like to thank Bill Ziegler (V/C), whom unfortunately only managed three games due to serious Achilles tendon injury, but where possible, still managed to attend and give moral support to the team. To Paul Marsh for arranging with his employer, to kit the team out with Club shirts with their names (nicknames) on them. To Brad Young for supplying the Gatorades whenever he could (they were especially appreciated on those days when the temperatures were extreme, particularly the Final). To my loving wife for once again being the “best” scorer in the game and for managing the team. Also for taking on the duties of the Club Registrar, this making my job that much easier. I must not forget Katie for being our assistant scorer whenever Judy or myself couldn’t do the job. Last but not least, I would like to thank the lads in the team for all their efforts with duties when required and for their Team commitment when needed to stand down. With nineteen registered players it was hard to ensure all got a fair go, regardless of ability. Every player of the nineteen that played did something throughout the fifteen rounds towards the team’s total success, that culminated in the ultimate goal, that of being the “Premier Team” in the C1 competition in the Shire.

CAPTAIN – ALLAN LOFTHOUSE (A very proud captain)

C2 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Paul Bremner BOWLER: Corey Davis

THE TEAM:- Craig Townsend (Capt), Kevin Bryan, Paul Bremner, Dean Fenner, Colin Kidd, Cameron Beck, Corey Davis, Kurt Mitchell, Kristian White, Peter Kingsley, Brendan Townsend, Matthew Jones, Dale Bates.

With a total of 62 points, and finishing 3rd on the table, the C2’s can certainly consider this a successful season. The team was constructed from 10 boys that came up from the U16’s for their first year of men’s cricket, a couple of last years’ C3’s, and 2 oldies out there to try and keep things generally under control. It was always going to be an uphill battle, with the selectors putting together a team where only 2 of the boys had a batting average in double figures, and only 3 scoring an aggregate of more than 50 in the prior year. I simply had to hope they could bowl! The excitement began from the very first ball of the season, bowled by Dale Bates, which slipped out of his hand and became a fast full toss hitting the opposing captain square in the kidney’s after he turned his back on it. The opposing captain then proceeded to walk down the pitch and carry on like a complete pork chop for the next 5 minutes, demanding Dale be taken out of the attack, before settling down to face ball 2. Obviously Dale continued to bowl. Round two saw us get smashed outright, scoring only 25 in the second dig, but at least we were home on time to watch the Swans in the AFL Grand Final. Round 4 saw us face Heathcote, who at this stage, unknown to me, was made up of ex- Engadine players, no longer welcome at the Dragons due to their behavioral issues in the prior season. Given the foul mouth sledging, drinking, and loading the team with unregistered players, it soon became obvious why! Round 5 resulted in our first victory of the season, missing an outright by only 1 run, we were now underway. We were beginning to mould as a team, and everyone was improving. Congratulations to Corey Davis who took the teams’ only hat trick in this game (5-36), and to Paul Bremner who scored his highest result for the season with an excellent 70. Round 6 saw the winning streak continue and our first outright win. Congratulations to Dale Bates on scoring his first ton (102 not out), having never scored a 50 before. Paul’s batting streak continued with a quick-fire 51 and taking 5-42 with the ball in the second innings. The remaining rounds had mixed results, with many of the boys taking personal best bowling figures, and steadily improving their batting. An unfortunate semi final result ended the season one week short of our hopes. I think we had our moments, and quite a few laughs along the way. The experience will hold all in good stead for next season, when we can hopefully go 2 better. I would like to thank all the players for their efforts during the season, and special thanks to Kevin Bryan who helped a very inexperienced captain with field placements and tactics. Many thanks also go to Jason (Happy) Gilmore and Dean McMillan for filling in successfully when needed. Thank you also to the parents who showed their support throughout the season. Thanks boys

CAPTAIN – CRAIG TOWNSEND
