  • Storming the Gatekeepers: Digital Disintermediation in the Market for Books
Storming the Gatekeepers: Digital Disintermediation in the Market for Books JoelWaldfogel Carlson School of Management, Department of Economics, and Law School University of Minnesota and NBER Imke Reimers Department of Economics University of Minnesota December 21, 2012 Digitization is transforming the market for books. Lower marginal costs have reduced prices by 10-15 percent in the past four years, and digitization has given creators the ability to circumvent traditional gatekeepers and publish their work directly. The number of self-published works has grown by almost 300 percent since 2006 and now exceeds the number of traditionally published works. Given the inherent difficulty in predicting the ex post appeal of creative products at the time of investment, a growth in available new products can substantially expand the appeal of available products. While e-book data are not systematically available, we are able to document that falling prices have increased consumer surplus by $2-3 billion per year. Using bestseller lists in conjunction with title-level data on physical sales and our best estimates of e-book sales, we document that many self-published books have substantial ex post appeal to consumers. Works that began their commercial lives through self-publishing began to appear on bestseller lists in 2011 and by late 2012 such works accounted for a tenth of both bestseller listings and estimated unit sales. In romantic fiction, self-published works account for almost a third. These changes challenge the role of gatekeepers while benefiting consumers. 0 Introduction Technological change has transformed content industries such as recorded music, newspapers, movies, television, and books.

PULLING BACK THE COVERS ON A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY THIS DOCUMENT INCLUDES: 1. Synopsis 2. Director Bio 3. Main Characters 4. Project History 5. Romance Statistics 6. Crew Bios 7. Credits 1. SYNOPSIS Love stories are universal. Love stories are powerful. And so are the women who write them. Love Between the Covers is the fascinating story of the vast, funny, and savvy female community that has built a powerhouse industry sharing love stories. Romance fiction is sold in 34 languages on six continents, and the genre grosses more than a billion dollars a year -- outselling mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined. Yet the millions of voracious women (and sometimes men) who read, write, and love romance novels have remained oddly invisible. Until now. For three years, we follow the lives of five very diverse published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love—while empowering others to do the same. Romance authors have built a fandom unlike all others, a global sisterhood where authors know their readers personally and help them become writers themselves. During the three years we’ve been shooting Love Between the Covers, we have witnessed the biggest power shift that has taken place in the publishing industry over the last 200 years. And it’s the romance authors who are on the front lines, pioneering new ways to survive and build communities in this rapidly changing environment. lovebetweenthecovers.com Laurie Kahn facebook.com/lovebtcfilm 112 Bailey Road twitter.com/lovebtcfilm Watertown, MA 02472 lovebetweenthecovers.tumblr.com (617) 924 6633 [email protected] 2.

Interview with Jeremy Greenfield, Editorial Director Digital Book World For podcast release Monday, December 10, 2012 Q: We’re in the offices of F+W Media, joined by Jeremy Greenfield, editorial director of Digital Book World. Jeremy, great to see you. A: Good seeing you too, Chris. Q: We wanted to chat today about what we’re calling the year of self-publishing. It really seems to be the dominant story in publishing, led of course by the tremendous success of 50 Shades of Grey, but so much more has been going on when it comes to self-publishing. It’s an area you’ve been covering a lot this year. So, tell us about what you feel are the high points on that subject? A: Well, I think that the biggest thing to note for both the industry and people, in general, is that we are going through a golden age, a renaissance for writers and authors. Never before have they been able to have so much access to distributing their stuff to such a wide audience. And I think for people who have something inside of them that needs to come out that they want to bring to the world, or who want to make a living off of their writing, this is really a wonderful time for them to be working. On the flipside, I think what this means is that for the publishing industry, there’s new competition. There’s new competition from these self-published authors to sell their books to readers. I think most publishers are looking at what’s happening in self-publishing as more of an opportunity, though, than a challenge.
