Next, Polly Dahang placed first in the 25 meter speed walk. We were off to a roaring start! The Maui Chapter spontaneously invited us to compete in the 400 meter relay race. We tore across the finish line in first place. Next was a softball throwing event. When Jonas nailed his first place throw, the announcer asked if he was throwing the ball all the way to Lanai! In different divisions, Cooper Riley, Polly and Kealohi also placed first in throwing competitions, and Mateo placed second. Our final event was the Long Jump. Also in different divisions, Jonas and Mateo placed first, while Cooper and Kealohi placed second. At the end of the meet, we learned about the traditional Friendship Tunnel, in which all of the coaches, families, Cooper and Kealohi friends and volunteers cheer and join raised hands to form a tunnel, while all of the athletes run through. It was an extraordinarily fun and inspirational experience to cheer on our team at the official ceremony as our athletes were awarded their ribbons. Then, on the ferry ride home, the Captain announced our sixteen ribbon victory. It was a proud moment for both athletes and parents. Team I’iwi’s outstanding performance has qualified them for the State Summer Olympic games on Oahu on May 28-30. At this time, we do not have enough funds to fly our families to these games. Several stores, including Blue Ginger Cafe and Richards, are hosting fundraising jars, and we are also participating in the May 2nd Charity Walk to raise funds for our team. Thank you for your support. We would like to thank our sponsors, Island Air who flew coach Dylan from Maui every week for practices, Expeditions Ferry who sponsored our trip to Maui, and Nature’s Bakery who supply our team with yummy fig Mateo bars. Our Lanai Special Olympics team is brand new, and we are open to all athletes on our island with special needs, including ADHD, and Autism. If you have an IEP, you qualify. We would love to recruit enough players for a softball team. We practice every Wednesday after school in Dole Park. You are welcome to drop by and say hello. When parents and students first walked in they had their family pictures taken. Parents then had a wonderful and delicious dinner which was personally served to them by their child. After dinner, Noel Nakao provided a slideshow that added a nice touch to show students’ true appreciation to their Noe Eskaran, Noel Nakao and Leimari Bacalso parents. There were song performances by the group of Ezekiel Bolo, Chavis Cabanting, and Jessica Bugtong, plus dance performances by Noelani Eskaran and Caroline Stuck. Then everyone had fun playing games; one of the most hilarious was the spin the wheel game where parents had to act out charades to their child. Then came a very moving moment when mothers had their special dance with their sons and fathers danced with their daughters. It was a night filled with great joy and happiness. Kolen Faye Taal and Kim Viloria Enjoy Life at the Blue Ginger Cafe

Comfort food; we all have certain foods we enjoy eating and at Blue Ginger Cafe, a bowl of steaming hot saimin noodles garnished with vegetables and slices of fi sh cake hit the spot at any time of the day, from an early morning breakfast to a late dinner. An island favorite with students on their way to school is fried rice with a fried egg on top of it. After a day of hunting or fi shing, nothing beats an old fashioned Loco Moco - two scoops of rice, one scoop of mac salad and two hamburger patties topped with an egg and smothered with brown gravy! Some of Blue Ginger Cafe’s regulars come in for breakfast every morning and order the same thing every day. Who says you can’t eat a pancake every morning? If you’ve got a busy day ahead of you, nothing is quite as good to get you up and going as Blue Ginger’s pancakes! Don’t forget their pastries though. All the cafe’s pastries and breads are made fresh daily. If you’re camping at the beach or planning a cookout, order some of their hamburger buns. Grill up some burgers at Hulopoe Beach and enjoy!
