An audience of 1,200 people packed the auditorium at Temple (Texas) High School for the event. The crowd included students, teachers, the marching band, cheerleaders, and the Wildcat football team. In addition, Greene was joined by his mother, sister and daughter. Hometown Hall of Famer™ is a national program that honors the hometown roots of the greatest heroes of the game with special ceremonies and plaque dedication events in local communities. “The plaque is for Temple and that is so wonderful,” commented Greene who was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. Greene brought one of the Temple football players, Ryan Bing, on stage with him during the presentation and shared, “If you put forth the effort, luck usually follows effort and you can probably do anything that you would like to do.” Friday’s event was the 94th Hometown Hall of Famer™ ceremony. Greene, 1968 consensus All-America at North Texas State, was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ No. 1 pick in the 1969 draft. The 6-4, 275-pounder was a cornerstone of Coach Chuck Noll's program that produced four AFC titles and four Super Bowl victories in the 1970s. COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE Playing at left defensive tackle in the Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” defense, Greene was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969 when he received the first of his 10 Pro Bowl invitations. Greene was armed with speed, quickness, strength and great determination and, at the peak of his career, could dominate a game almost single-handedly. His durability was demonstrated by the fact he played in 181 of a possible 190 regular-season games. Greene was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1972 and 1974 and named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s. On the day after Christmas, 1976, the Pittsburgh Steelers saw their run at an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title end in sunny California with a 24-7 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Some 33 years later, the defeat still stings members of a team many believe was the greatest in Pittsburgh's proud history. “I've never played in a game where our two star running backs were out," middle linebacker Jack Lambert said once. “I’ve made the comment a couple of times, ‘Give us a six-pack, and we’ll go out and play (the Raiders) again.'” Injuries suffered the week before in a playoff win over Baltimore sidelined Steeler backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier for the AFC championship game against the arch-rival Raiders. The loss was crushing, since Bleier and Harris had become just the second backfield tandem in NFL history to each rush for more than 1,000 yards, joining the Larry Csonka-Mercury Morris pairing in Miami, who had accomplished the feat in ‘72. To compensate for the absence of his starting backfield, Pittsburgh head coach Chuck Noll installed a three-tight- end offense featuring Larry Brown, Bennie Cunningham and Randy Grossman, with fullback Reggie Harrison as the team's lone setback. The result was disastrous, and seemed to confuse Steelers' quarterback Terry Bradshaw more than the Oakland defense. Noll tried to simplify Bradshaw’s assignments by calling plays from the sideline, but the Steelers still didn't get a first down until midway through the second quarter.

The Pioneers This section looks at the early days of the sport when a very unorganized, rough and tumble game was played in empty lots and other makeshift venues. It captures the moment when the NFL was born, when the rules of the game were created anew on every field and when one player of staggering ability, Red Grange, “barnstormed” across America to drum up fan support for a sport in its infancy. The Cowboys failed to win an NFL game until the beginning of their second season, when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers. It took six seasons before the Cowboys finally had a winning season. In 1966, however, the Cowboys would begin a streak of twenty consecutive winning seasons, which is still an NFL record today. In 1969, after the rival Dallas Texans of the AFL (a competing football league) left for Kansas City, the Cowboys began work on Texas Stadium in nearby Irving, Texas. It was completed in 1971 and could hold over 65,000 fans. That same year, the Dallas Cowboys made it to their first Super Bowl, Super Bowl V.

    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 18, No. 1 (1996) MINI-BIO: L.C. GREENWOOD By Bob Carroll The Pittsburgh Steelers were fined for uniform violation every game L.C. played. While his teammates wore the standard black shoes that went with the uniform, Greenwood's were always a shiney gold. His nickname, "Hollywood Bags," referred to his oversized, golden shoes. The Steelers never complained about the fines; L.C. was worth it. One of nine children, Greenwood was a good student at Rogers High School in Canton, MS, and received several academic scholarship offers. He chose Arkansas AM & N (now U. of Arkasas, Pine Bluff) where he earned a bachelor's degree in vocational education. A three-year regular at defensive tackle and end at, he was named an Ebony magazine All-America in his senior year. Nonetheless, "Bags" was not drafted until the tenth round in 1969. For two seasons, he served as Pittsburgh's fifth defensive lineman. In 1971, he became a regular, combining with All-Pro Joe Greene to form a nearly impregnable duo on the left side of the Steelers' defensive line. The right side -- Ernie Holmes and Dwight White -- was nearly as strong. Together, the "Steel Curtain" formed the heart of a legendary defense that took Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl victories and six division titles. A nightmare for quarterbacks, Greenwood used his 6'6" height and quick reflexes to bat down numerous enemy passes. In Super Bowl IX, he smashed down three of Fran Tarkenton's attempts. He had unusual speed and quickness for a man his size, and though his pass-rushing style was often described as "free-wheeling" and "reckless," he was remarkably consistent and undeniably effective.
