Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, Inc (World Hindu Council Of America) Tax Exemption Id: 51-0156325 Media Relations Office Tel. 954-559-7969 E-Mail: [email protected] To Date: March 18, 2013 H. E. Mr Mayankote Kelath Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal Rajbhaban, Kolkata 700 062 India fax 011 91 3322002444 Re: Act on the politically motivated arrest of Hindu Samhati leader Tapan Ghosh Honorable Sir, The World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) is deeply concerned at the internment of Hindu Samhati leader and social activist Tapan Ghosh, along with many other volunteers. On March 14, 2013, Mr Ghosh was arrested from his residence in Kolkata, West Bengal, India under P.S. Case No. 52/dt 05.02.2012 u/s 295 A, 298 and 120 B (IPC). More than thirty- seven other activists including Bikarna Naskar have also been arrested, over the next few days. Given the proclivity of political parties in Bengal, to play “vote bank” politics, the timing of the arrests, just before the upcoming Panchayat elections, cast serious doubt on the legitimacy of these arrests. The recent inability of the State Government in containing unabated Jihadi violence that engulfed Nalaikhali and surrounding villages in Canning also raises serious questions on the State Government’s intentions. Over the past five years, Hindu Samhati has worked to reach out to the downtrodden population in the rural areas of Bengal, especially in the North and South 24 Parganas, Burdwan, Birbhum and Midnapore. They have organized youth at the village level, agitated against land grabbing, forced conversion and other atrocities by extremist groups.

  • John Dayal Interim Report
3 0 0 DAYS Interim Report John Dayal 300 DAYS Documenting Hate and Communal Violence under the Modi Regime JOHN DAYAL (With inputs from Kiren Shaheen, Liris Thomas, Mansi Sharma, Shabnam Hashmi, Shahnaz Husain, Tehmina Arora, and Vijayesh Lal) Executive Summary: The rape of a 70 year old Nun in West Bengal in an attack ona convent and school in February 2015 sent shockwaves throughout India, and the world. “Protect not just Cows, but human beings also,” said Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference. At least 43deaths in over 600 cases of violence, 149 targeting Christians and the rest Muslims, have taken place in 2014 in India till March this year, marking 300 days of the National Development Alliance government of Mr. Narendra Modi. The number of dead is other than the 108 killed in Assam in attacks by armed tribal political groups on Muslims. Desecration and destruction of churches, assault on pastors, illegal police detention of church workers, and denial of Constitutional rights of Freedom of Faith aggravate the coercion and terror unleashed in campaigns of Ghar Wapsiand cries of Love Jihad. Since May 2014, there has been a marked shift in public discourse. There has been a relentless foregrounding of communal identities, a ceaseless attempt to create a divide between ‘us’ and ‘them’. The BJP leaders guaranteed to abuse, ridicule and threaten minorities. Hate statements by Union and state ministers, threats by Members of Parliament, state politicians, and cadres in saffron caps or Khaki shorts resonate through the landscape. But most cases go unreported, unrecorded by police.

Despite a proliferation of political parties and militant organizations eager to take or at least share power in a new Iraq, the Ba’athists, who once held a monopoly on power and remain convinced they are the only legitimate government in Iraq, are still active and reorganizing. The Iraqi Ba’athists, however, have split into two factions, one based in Iraq and the other in Syria. The latter group is led by General Muhamad Yunis al-Ahmad, a once relatively obscure member of Saddam’s general staff who has emerged as a claimant to the leadership of the Iraqi Ba’ath party.
