Weasel, Short-Tailed
Short-tailed Weasel Mustela ermine Other common names Ermine, stoat Introduction The short-tailed weasel is one of the smaller members of the weasel family. In winter, their coat turns pure white to help them blend into their surroundings. This white pelt has been prized by the fur trade for hundreds of years, and it was even considered a symbol of royalty in Europe. Physical Description and Anatomy Short-tailed weasels change their fur according to the season. From December to March or April their coat is pure white and the tip of the tail is black. This allows them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Only the white individuals, as well as their pelts, are referred to as ermine. In warmer seasons, the upper part of the body is brown, and the lower parts are cream colored, while the tip of the tail remains black. The change in coat is triggered by day length as well as ambient temperature. Like other members of the weasel family, short-tailed weasels have a long, slender body and short legs. Adults are 7 – 13 inches (17.8 – 33.0 cm) long, and only weigh 1 – 4 ounces (28.4 – 113.4 g). The tail is less than 44% of the length of the head and body, giving this species its name. Short-tailed weasel pelt. Identifying features (tracks, scat, calls) Short-tailed weasels are easily confused with long-tailed weasels, as they have very similar proportions and coloration. The most reliable way to differentiate between the two species is to measure the length of the tail.

The colour, shades and texture of their fur and the gracefulness and beauty of their movements have a strong favourable influence on human emotions. American mink Ž.Mustela Õison was adapted to ranch rearing at the beginning of this century, and nowadays this species has the highest economic value among mustelids as a fur producer. Sable Ž.Martes zibellina was introduced into farming more recently and is used as a farm animal almost exclusively in Russia. The third Mustelidae species, which is used as a farm-bred fur bearer is the European polecat Ž.Mustela putorius . An albino form of European polecat, known as the domestic ferret Ž.Mustela putorius furo has a long history of domestication, and there are evidences of this history.

This cooperative effort by USDA Forest Service Research and the National Forest System assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of four forest carnivores in the western United States: American marten, fisher, lynx, and wolverine. The conservation assessment reviews the biology and ecology of these species. It also discusses management considerations stemming from what is known and identifies information needed. Overall, we found huge knowledge gaps that make it difficult to evaluate the species’ conservation status. In the western United States, the forest carnivores in this assessment are limited to boreal forest ecosystems. These forests are characterized by extensive landscapes with a component of structurally complex, mesic coniferous stands that are characteristic of late stages of forest development. The center of the distrbution of this forest type, and of forest carnivores, is the vast boreal forest of Canada and Alaska. In the western conterminous 48 states, the distribution of boreal forest is less continuous and more isolated so that forest carnivores and their habitats are more fragmented at the southern limits of their ranges.

The ana- lysis of scats revealed a very important interspecific trophic niche overlap in the mesic habitat. In the xeric habitat the differences were significant and the overlap moderate. Seasonal variations ex- isted in the degree of overlap, which reached its highest level in winter in the mesic habitat and in spring in the xeric habitat. The results indicated that the availability of food in each habitat was important in determining the divergence of the diets. Thus, in the mesic habitat, competition could be possible, although it was not important enough to cause a habitat segregation. Martens seemed to be more adaptive than foxes, probably due to their smaller size and arboreal life, allowing them to exploit fruit which is not as profitable for the fox. Foxes based their diet on small mammals, car- rion and cultivated fruit in both habitats.

Statement of support for the proposed inclusion on the American mink (Neovison vison) on the list of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern On behalf of the Fur Free Alliance (FFA), an international coalition of 40 animal protection organisations, I am writing with regard to the proposed inclusion of the American mink on the List of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern. The FFA strongly supports the inclusion of the American mink on this list given that it is one of the most invasive alien mammal species present in Europe and decisive action is necessary to prevent the further spread of the species and to protect biodiversity. Below we outline why we believe that American mink should be listed. Impact of the American mink on biodiversity The American mink was first introduced to Europe for the purposes of fur production during the 1920s. Feral populations of American mink, which have become established as a result of animals escaping or being deliberately released from fur farms, are widespread and abundant in Europe. The species is now believed to be present in most EU Member States. American mink is an invasive mammal species, which has a significant impact on native fauna in Europe, affecting at least 47 native species negatively. 1 Through competition for resources, the American mink has been implicated in the displacement of the European mink and European polecat.2 In the UK, predation by the American mink has been identified as the main cause for the near extinction of the water vole.3 Local studies across Europe have shown that the American mink can have a significant impact on ground-nesting bird populations, rodents and amphibians.4 To prevent further damage to native biodiversity a number of EU Member States have already implemented preventive measures to avoid new introductions and the further expansion of feral American mink.

STOATS 1. Description of the problem (a) Location of the case-study New Zealand’s mainland and some islands. (b) History (origin, pathway and dates, including time-period between initial entry/first detection of alien species and development of impacts) of introduction(s) Stoats, ferrets and weasels were brought here in the 1880s in a desperate attempt to halt the rocketing increase in rabbit numbers, despite the protests of bird experts. Stoats were implicated in the decline of some native bird species soon after their introduction, and understanding is continuing to grow about the extent to which they contribute to the decline of native birds. Their introduction is commonly regarded as one of the worst mistakes ever made by European colonists in New Zealand. Stoats are now by far the most common of the mustelids and are widespread in forest and on farmland. They are widely regarded as the most significant predator of a number of New Zealand’s most threatened and endangered native bird species. For example, the extinction of the kakapo from the Mainland and the probable extinction of the South Island kokako are attributed to stoats.
