Approx. 12.5 Hours • Unabridged When Lane Coolman’s car is rear-ended on the road to the Florida Keys, this accident is no accident. Behind the wheel of the offending car is Merry Mansfield—the eponymous Razor Girl, so named for her eye-popping twist on an otherwise unexciting scam. But this is only the beginning of a series of events that spiral crazily out of control while unleashing some of the wildest characters Carl Hiaasen has ever set loose. There’s Martin Trebeaux, the owner of Sedimental Journeys—a company that steals sand from one beach to replace erosion on another . Buck Nance, a Wisconsin accordionist who rebrands himself the star of a redneck reality show called Bayou Brethren . a street psycho known as Blister who’s more Buck Nance than Buck could ever be . Brock Richardson, a Miami product-liability lawyer who’s getting dangerously—and deformingly—hooked on the very product he’s litigating against . and Andrew Yancy—formerly Detective Yancy, first introduced to fans in Bad Monkey. Busted down to the Health Department after accosting a girlfriend’s husband with a DustBuster, Yancy believes that if he can solve a high-profile murder case, he’ll win his police badge back and leave the roach patrol behind forever. That Razor Girl is the key to his future will be as startling as anything else he encounters along the way—including the giant Gambian rats that are haunting his restaurant inspections. was born and raised in Florida. He is the author of thirteen previous novels, including the bestsellers Bad Monkey, Star Island, Nature Girl, Skinny Dip, Sick Puppy, and Lucky You, and five bestselling children’s books, Hoot, Flush, Scat, Chomp, and Skink. His most recent work of nonfiction is Dance of the Reptiles, a collection of his columns from The Miami Herald. • Many Readers Have “Go-To” Authors, Writers They Turn to When No One Else Grabs Their Attention
SUMMER READING GUIDE 2018 Many readers have “go-to” authors, writers they turn to when no one else grabs their attention. This summer we’d like to help you find a “go-to” writer of your own. Below is a list of authors who have many titles to their credit. Some have written a series with recurring characters; some have written books with similar themes; some have written exclusively within one genre (mystery, fantasy, and so on); and some have just produced lots of good, lively writing over the years. In addition, we have included some individual titles, recommended by students, by faculty, and by the library staff. THE HEADMASTER’S CHOICE THIS YEAR IS BEARTOWN BY FREDRIK BACKMAN, WHICH BEGINS LIKE THIS: “It’s a Friday in early March in Beartown and nothing has happened yet. Everyone is waiting. Tomorrow, the Beartown Ice Hockey Club’s junior team is playing in the semi-final of the biggest youth tournament in the country. How important can something like that be? In most places, not so important, of course. But Beartown isn’t most places.” Backman’s novel explores the hopes that a small community pins on a group of teenaged athletes, and it explores the secrets that can tear a small town apart. Backman’s characters—coaches, athletes, parents, and local fans—are often flawed, often heroic, and always fully human. In addition to Beartown, you are to read two other books from the list below. You may choose two books by the same author, or two books by different authors.

Although more muted than in some of the preceding ten, Nature Girl’s barely concealed subtext expresses Hiaasen’s outraged concern over the diminishing natural environment in his home state. Hiaasen’s chosen form, the popular crime novel, has enabled him to reach a wide audience with his ecological message. Working within the generic confines of the crime novel, however, produces a number of intriguing challenges to Hiaasen’s radical tendencies.

ScottStar Island or Skink were the last novels by Carl Hiaasen I read. Can't really remember when that was. Up to that point I read all his novels on their release starting w/Tourist Season and became an avid fan. He didn't fall out of favor so much. It's just I quit reading as much as/or changed the genre and substance of what got my time. Then like a flash I remembered, "what has Carl been up to". Razor Girl seemed a better pick than Bad Monkey so here I arrive............ the story took a little bit to hook me since so many cast were being introduced early on as fast as they could. I trudged on and once they seemed to settle in or get sifted off, the story settled down and I really liked the madcap comedy and interaction of the reaming dozen or so characters. Merry Mansfield as Razor Girl seemed as hip a chick as you would be lucky to meet.
