Life Magazine coined the phrase “teen idol” after him and he is credited with pioneering the country rock sound. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson’s life and music touched millions, and now his twin sons, Matthew and Gunnar, relive the music and memories in their multi-media event. The show features hit songs like “Travelin’ Man” and “Hello, Mary Lou,” as well as never-before-seen interviews from the artists Ricky Nelson influenced, including Paul McCartney and John Fogarty. Ricky Nelson left a legacy of 53 hit singles. Relive the nostalgia of his sound with his sons in this very special concert. MARSHALL TUCKER BAND Friday November 13, 2015 8:00 PM “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. With its definitive blend of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and gospel, MARSHALL TUCKER BAND earned seven gold and three platinum albums and scored four hit singles on Billboard’s country chart and one on Billboard’s gospel chart. Doug Gray continues to lead the current band with hit singles like “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “Can’t You See,” “Desert Skies,” and “Take The Highway.” “They called us Southern rock, but we have always played everything from country, jazz, blues, rock & roll and all things in-between.” JOHNNY RIVERS April 23, 2016 Saturday8:00 PM With 17 Gold records, 29 chart hits, two Grammy Awards, and more than 30 million records, JOHNNY RIVERS continues to perform his big hits like “Secret Agent Man,” “Memphis,” “Maybelline,” “Mountain of Love,” “Midnight Special,” “Seventh Son” and so many beloved others. Rivers grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and met Shreveport guitar legend James Burton in 1958 on the Louisiana Hayride. Burton took one of Rivers’ songs, “I’ll Make Believe,” to Ricky Nelson, who recorded it. By 1966, with numerous hit albums and singles on Imperial Records, Rivers founded Soul City Records and Rivers Music Publishing. Over the years he has produced many groups and top hits. OFFICIAL BLUES BROTHERS REVUE May 13, 2016 Friday 8:00 PM Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi and Musical Director Paul Shaffer present THE OFFICIAL BLUES BROTHERS REVUE. This live concert show combines the comedy and hits from the original movie and pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, gospel, and soul music. Hear all of The Blues Brothers classics such as “Soul Man,” “Rubber Biscuit,” “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Rawhide,” and “Gimme Some Lovin’.” Upbeat and uplifting, The Official Blues Brothers Revue is fun for all ages. Featuring Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! On July 3, 1925, Saenger-Ehrlich Enterprises opened The Strand Theatre in Shreveport. It was a grand palace, with a massive main chandelier 8 feet in diameter. On the walls, set into the ceilings 65 feet high were ornate plaster figures filigrees gleaming with gold, colorfully-painted panels, huge columns and hand-painted murals of Greek muses. Thanks to a loving restoration of much of the theatre in the 1980s, the Strand still stands today, as much of a jewel of downtown as it was in 1925. Happy 90th birthday to this grand old lady of Shreveport! Season Sponsors DOWNTOWN SHREVEPORT.

  • Against Expression?: Avant-Garde Aesthetics in Satie's" Parade"
Against Expression?: Avant-garde Aesthetics in Satie’s Parade A thesis submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies and Research of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC In the division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2020 By Carissa Pitkin Cox 1705 Manchester Street Richland, WA 99352 [email protected] B.A. Whitman College, 2005 M.M. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate.

  • Download Urinetown Theatre Program
From the Director Welcome to the UAH campus and thank you for joining us tonight. Now that the cold dark days of winter are fading, we are here to celebrate the coming of spring with a fun Broad- way musical. This talented and devoted cast of players, artists, directors and technicians have been toiling through the winter months to prepare this wonderful piece of theatre to share with you, our humble audience. UAH Theatre is proud to be a part of this rich artistic community and privileged to offer this creative study to our students. Please enjoy the show and be sure to tell your friends that we are here producing live theatre at Huntsville’s own University. David Harwell - Director About the Musical Winner of three Tony awards and one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Greg Kotis had the idea for Urinetown while traveling in Europe.
