Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips November 23, 2018 Defenseman Lawrence Pilut hoping to help Sabres extend winning streak By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News November 22, 2018 Lawrence Pilut had just stepped off the ice at Bill Gray's Iceplex, the practice rink for the Rochester Americans, when he was pulled aside by his coach, Chris Taylor. Pilut, a 22-year-old rookie defenseman, wasn't sure what to expect. Then, Taylor said that Pilut had been recalled by the Buffalo Sabres and he would need to be at KeyBank Center in time for Wednesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Pilut participated in warmups and headed to the press box, where he watched as a sold-out crowd cheered on a 5-2 victory, the Sabres' first seven-game win streak since 2006-07. Now, he's hoping for a chance to play in front of those fans, sooner rather than later. "Here is where I want to be," Pilut said after an informal skate Thanksgiving morning at KeyBank Center. "Here is where I want to play. I’m just happy right now to be up here. Now I just want to get into the action." It's unclear when he will get the opportunity. Pilut was recalled when Patrik Berglund was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury, leaving the Sabres with 13 forwards and eight defensemen. Marco Scandella was scratched Wednesday night and remains day-to-day with a lower body injury suffered Monday in Pittsburgh, though he was one of 10 Sabres to participate in an informal skate Thanksgiving morning.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips February 9, 2019 Casey Nelson takes a hit and keeps on going in Amerks' conditioning assignment By Bill Hoppe The Buffalo News February 9, 2019 ROCHESTER – Casey Nelson couldn’t even finish one shift Friday. Just 39 seconds into the defenseman’s American Hockey League conditioning assignment, Springfield’s Dryden Hunt checked him from behind, knocking his throat into the dasher board. “Not how you want to start off,” Nelson said after the Americans throttled the Thunderbirds 7-1 in Blue Cross Arena. “It woke me up a little bit.” After spending a few minutes in the dressing room, Nelson, 26, returned and kept taking his regular shift beside Brendan Guhle. Nelson hadn’t played since suffering an upper-body injury with the Sabres on Dec. 4. Waiting 66 days for some game action – “Very antsy,” he acknowledged – was difficult. “I’ve been out for two months,” Nelson said. “It feels like years.” Nelson said his first couple of shifts “felt a little weird.” “But it’s definitely coming back pretty quick,” said Nelson, who has compiled one goal and five points in 22 outings with the Sabres this season. Nelson said his conditioning stint will likely be reevaluated after a few games. The Amerks play a road game against the Utica Comets on Saturday. “He played very well for his first game,” Amerks coach Chris Taylor said. Of course, having played 98 games with the Amerks over the past two seasons, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Nelson knows the AHL well. “Very physical, a lot of speed,” he said.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 14, 2019 As Sabres' slide continues, Jeff Skinner trying to 'work through' recent slump By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News March 13, 2019 When the Buffalo Sabres' season reached its apex, Zoom Copy in downtown Buffalo placed a sign outside its Main Street storefront that read, "Jeff Skinner for Mayor." At the time, the 26-year-old winger was the toast of Buffalo, captivating the Sabres' long-frustrated fan base by scoring 10 goals during their 10-game winning streak in November. He was the leading goal scorer on the best team in the NHL through the season's first 25 games. Now, Skinner is only three weeks away from continuing his run as the league's longest-tenured player yet to appear in a Stanley Cup playoff game and will carry a 12-game goalless drought into Thursday night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The talk of his pending unrestricted free agency, and a possible long-term contract extension, has been replaced by questions about his unprecedented bad luck and the Sabres' historic slide. "We’re not where we want to be," Skinner said following practice Wednesday in KeyBank Center. "That’s not a great feeling. Again, we can only control what we do from here on." Despite the recent slump, Skinner's 36 goals in 69 games are 10 behind Washington's Alex Ovechkin for the league lead and rank ninth overall. Skinner became the fifth player in franchise history to score at least 35 goals in his first season with the Sabres and his next goal will match his previous career high, which was set in 2016- 17.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 4, 2018 Fiala leads Predators to 2-1 win over Sabres By Jim Diamond Associated Press December 4, 2018 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Nashville Predators credited their defensive effort after their latest win. Kevin Fiala scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period and the Predators beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 Monday night. Ryan Ellis also scored and Pekka Rinne stopped 21 shots to help Nashville win its second straight. “I thought we were really good defensively tonight,” Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. “They’ve got a lot of tools over there, a lot of people that can hurt you, certainly that top line and they’ve got some guys from the back end that can really move the puck and add to the rush.” Rinne stopped eight shots in the first, five in the second and eight in the third. Five of the eight Rinne turned away in the third came in the final 1:17 with Hutton lifted for an extra attacker — including a stop on a slap shot by the Sabres’ Jack Eichel with 15.4 seconds remaining. “That was one of our better defensive games all year,” Rinne said. “Guys did an extremely good job just staying with it. ... They have a lot of team speed and they’re top couple of lines are pretty dangerous.” Sam Reinhart had a goal for Buffalo, which is 0-2-1 since a 10-game winning streak — with each loss coming by one goal. Carter Hutton had 23 saves. “It seems like we’ve been having trouble for a little bit here,” Reinhart said.
