Dean *Anthony Vidler to receive ACSA Centennial Award The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) announced today that Anthony Vidler will receive a special Centennial Award at next week’s 100th ACSA Annual Meeting in Boston. Anthony Vidler is Dean and Professor at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, where he has served since 2001. The Centennial Award was created by the ACSA Board of Directors in recognition of Dean Vidler’s wide ranging contributions to architectural education. Says Judith Kinnard, FAIA, ACSA president: “Anthony Vidler’s teaching and scholarship have had a major impact on architectural education. We invited him to receive this special award during our 100th anniversary and give the keynote lecture because of his extraordinary ability to link current issues in architecture and urbanism to a broad historic trajectory. His work forces us to question our assumptions as we engage contemporary conditions as designers.” Anthony Vidler received his professional degree in architecture from Cambridge University in England, and his doctorate in History and Theory from the University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands. Dean Vidler was a member of the Princeton University School of Architecture faculty from 1965 to 1993, serving as the William R. Kenan Jr. Chair of Architecture, the Chair of the Ph.D. Committee, and Director of the Program in European Cultural Studies. In 1993 he took up a position as professor and Chair of the Department of Art History at the University of California, Los Angeles, with a joint appointment in the School of Architecture from 1997. -

The number of recorded sales, 1,020, rose a great deal from the 862 recorded in the preceding month. Interest rates, while rising, are low, many prices are down off their (asking) highs, sellers are more inclined to negotiate on price and there are more options to choose from……although in some areas there are shortages. But yes, there are some reasons to explain why the luxury market is not faring as well as it ought to be: • Pricing escalated too far too fast. Buyer fatigue caused markets to pause and when they did, some sellers blinked causing more downward price adjustments. • Sellers were spoiled by the speed of sales: now that has normalized, yet it still feels very slow compared to the Studio-54-style pace of 2014-2016. • Most buyers between 2012 and 2015 saw an almost certain upside in buying…..these same people don’t want to take a loss buying now in case they can buy later for less. • Many buyers between 2010 and 2015 were buying purely for investment purposes: who wants to buy an investment apartment in a market where there are many price drops? Which investor likes buying in a market where rental returns are a bit depressed, especially if they can wait? The few smart, non-herd-mentality investors though are buying now because they have better choices and can negotiate. -

Sales of new condominium units included in this report are expected to aggregate between $27.6 and $33.6 billion in sales through 2019. The average price of these new development units is expected to reach a record of $5.9 million per unit in 2015. At the same time, far fewer units are being built than during the last development boom, in the mid-2000s, therefore the number of closed sales is expected to increase more modestly than their prices. 2013 2014 2015-2019* TOTAL NEW DEVELOPMENT SALES $2.7B $4.1B $27.6B-$33.6B+ Pricing information for the 4,881 new development units covered in this report comes from active and in-contract listings, offering plans, and projections based on listing prices. Ultimately, sales of these apartments will total roughly $27.6 to $33.6 billion through 2019. Sales in new developments totaled $4.1 billion in 2014, up 50 percent from 2013. The 2013 total, $2.7 billion, also represented a significant increase from the $1.9 billion recorded in 2012. While total sales volume has increased in recent years, it is still substantially less than at the height of the market, in 2008, when new development sales totaled $10.4 billion.
