One enigmatic montane taxon is Glaucidium [gnoma] cobanense, which occurs in highland forests from northern Chiapas state, Mexico, through Guatemala to central Honduras. Its voice remained unknown into the 1990s, and its taxonomic status thus remained unresolved. Clark ,1 Krista LePiane and Lori Liu Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, University of California, Riverside, CA, 92520, USA From the symposium “Bio-Inspiration of Silent Flight of Owls and Other Flying Animals: Recent Advances and Unanswered Questions” presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology January 3–7, 2020 at Austin, Texas. 1E-mail: [email protected] Synopsis Two hypotheses have been proposed for the evolution of structures that reduce flight sounds in birds. According to the stealth hypothesis, flying quietly reduces the ability of other animals (e.g., prey) to detect the animal’s approach from its flight sounds. This hypothesis predicts that animals hunting prey with acute hearing evolve silencing features. The self-masking hypothesis posits that reduced flight sounds permit the animal itself to hear better (such as the sounds of its prey, or its own echolocation calls) during flight. This hypothesis predicts that quieting features evolve in predators that hunt by ear, or in species that echolocate. Owls, certain hawks, and nightbirds (nocturnal Caprimulgiformes) have convergently evolved a sound-reducing feature: a velvety coating on the dorsal surface of wing and tail feathers. -

N. Kashin during the period 1978-1982. The first of these (Kashin 1978) contains several issues of relevance to the AOU Check-list. Following the recommendations of Gregory and Dickinson, I propose the following: (a) replace the genus name Nyctanassa Stejneger, 1887, with the prior name Nyctherodius Reichenbach, 1852. According to Gregory and Dickinson, “Nyctanassa was introduced as a new name on the grounds of presumed homonymy of Nyctherodius with Nycterodius MacGillivray 1842, but the one letter difference is no longer considered a homonym.” According to the ICZN (1999), Nyctanassa can be retained if Nyctherodius has not been used since 1899, but a late edition of Studer’s Birds of North America (Studer 1903) used this name. -

INTRODUCTION* It has long been a practice among ornithologists to study the dis tribution, variation, and ecological relationships of birds in areas characterized by diverse physiographic features. Such studies are m o t i v a t e d usually by the desire to aid in finding solutions for the many problems concerning the distribution and variation of birds. Following this custom and with this objective in mind, the writer has attempted to make a contribution to our knowledge of the birds 0f western North America in general and those of Utah in particular by selecting the highly diversified southwestern part of the state for an avifaunistic study. The area chosen includes the Pine Valley Mountains, the Beaver Dam Mountains, the Beaver Dam Wash and the valleys of the Santa Clara and Virgin rivers. -
Southern Mexico Tour Report 2019
The perky, endemic Sumichrast’s Wren obliged very well in its karst habitat (Mark Van Beirs) SOUTHERN MEXICO 26 FEBRUARY/3 – 19 MARCH 2019 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: SOUTHERN MEXICO www.birdquest-tours.com The enigmatic Horned Guan posed beautifully at El Triunfo (Mark Van Beirs) The fabulous, rare and truly enigmatic Horned Guan was without a doubt the BIRD of the TOUR on our recent Southern Mexico jaunt. The exquisite Pink-headed Warbler and the ever so endearing Bumblebee Hummingbird were other highlights and we were also very much enchanted with our encounter with the uniquely coloured Rosita’s (or Rose-bellied) Bunting. The closely related, sprightly Nava’s and Sumichrast’s Wrens both gave terrific performances full of character in their attractive karst habitat. The tour started under a bad omen, as a nasty bug, picked up with our first picnic lunch caused virtually the whole group to suffer Montezuma’s revenge for more than a week. We were also marred by unusual weather systems that caused a cold front on both of our visits to the Sumidero Canyon, dense mist on our 1,5 day stay in the Valle Nacional and extreme storm winds on our nocturnal foray near San Cristobal. Despite these setbacks we enjoyed a productive tour through the varied habitats of southern and central Mexico. Bird families that performed particularly well were the Corvids (11 species out of 21 Mexican residents), Wrens (24 species out of 34) and Parulid Warblers (34 species out of 66). A group of birds that, sadly, didn’t cooperate at all on this tour were the owls, although we sure tried. -

Western Mexico
The fabulous, range-restricted, endemic Tufted Jay definitely is one of those must see birds! (Dani Lopez-Velasco) WESTERN MEXICO 5/9 – 23 MARCH 2018 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS and DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO Our well-established Western Mexico tour, which has been so very well fine-tuned over the years by Pete, is a delightful celebration of the many fantastic and often colourful and gorgeous specialities and endemics of this much underrated and little-known part of the New World. Mexico sadly struggles with a rather bad reputation, but on our visit we stay far away from troubled areas and enjoy good food, great hospitality and spectacular landscapes. We visited the scenic states of Baja California, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima and had great looks at almost all of the goodies. The bird of the trip was the extremely attractive Orange- breasted Bunting, that we admired at several sites, but the superbly attractive Tufted Jays of the Durango Highway also scored very well. The posing male Red-breasted Chat that enlivened our last morning was another highlight and the rarest observation of the tour was without a doubt the scarce, very infrequently encountered Eared Quetzal! Nobody will forget our smashing encounter with the singing Eared Poorwill that sat in the open for tremendous looks. In fact, we did very well for nightbirds as next to more widespread nocturnal species we had eye-ball to eye-ball views of the recently described Cinereous Owl, of a cracking Stygian Owl, of an adorable Balsas Screech Owl, of an angry- looking Cape Pygmy Owl, of a minute Elf Owl and of a fabulous Buff-coloured Nightjar. -
Birding Arizona & California
BIRDING ARIZONA & CALIFORNIA April 15th –27th 2019 Introduction This trip report is the result of a two-week trip to Arizona and central & southern California. The first week was spent in SE-Arizona, Grand Canyon (one morning) and Las Vegas (one evening); the second week was spent in Central-California (3 days) and in and around Los Angeles. The first week I, Sjoerd Radstaak, was joined by Martijn Hammers and for the second week also Rob Gordijn, Helen Rijkes and Bas Garcia joined. For Rob & Helen, this week was part of their year-long world birding trip. Bas has lived in Los Angeles for a couple of years now with his wife Blanca and their daughter Ada. Bas really knows his spots and we prepared very little for the California part. Most of the information shared here is thanks to him! For Arizona we focused mainly on my personal targets, though we still managed to see almost all possible targets. As for the targets, we dipped on Rufous-capped Warbler, Blue-throated Hummingbird, and Tufted Flycatcher. We didn't try for Rose-throated Becard as we ran out of time. In total we recorded c. 270 species. In this report I will share some general information and then zoom in on both birding in Arizona and California. In case a target bird was only seen once or twice, it is usually in CAPITALS and underlined. Spots in [] are not necessary to visit, only if time allows.
