    THE GAME Compton's own Game (aka the Game and Hurricane Game) isued his debut LP, The Documentary, in 2004 through Aftermath/G-Unit/Universal. With everyone from Dr. Dre and 50 Cent to Nate Dogg, Kanye West, and Just Blaze contributing to the album, The Documentary made it clear from the outset that geographic squabbles weren't a part of Game's agenda. Rapping hadn't been at first, either. Having gotten involved in the drug trade after a rough childhood, it took being shot during a home invasion to cause an epiphany in Game. Inspired by N.W.A, The Chronic, Doggystyle, and classic albums from 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z, Game began rapping in 2001 and never looked back. His barbed and bold freestyles caught the ear of Dre, who signed him to Aftermath in 2003 and executive-produced his debut. It was delayed a few times, but The Documentary finally dropped in January 2005. Doctor's Advocate Soon Game and 50 Cent were at war over the former's reluctance to beef with any and every enemy of G-Unit. Freestyles and mixtapes were spawned in amazing amounts from both sides, and every time a truce seemed possible, things fell apart at the last minute. It seems Eric does not get the full credit and admiration he deserves nor is he remembered for his accomplishments in the music and entertainment fields. From the streets of Compton to NWA to Ruthless Records,, Eric ‘Eazy–E’ Wright made his mark. And it is sad that he is not remembered in the way that some other artist are remembered. Ruthless Records brought us many gangsta tracks. Eazy paved the way for the gangsta rap movement. He had Dr. Dre, he discovered and brought us the Bone Thugs. He added so much to the ‘rap’ game with his street savvy and business skillz.     The Identity Joke 123 The Identity Joke: Race, Rap, Performance in CB4 Daniel Traber Since their birth in the 1970s, hip-hop music and culture have repeatedly been framed as black cultural forms that give “urban” youth a voice in American society to speak the truth of their lived experience and feelings of political anger. Steven Best and Douglas Kellner are representative of this approach. They note: Rap is thus at once a formidable form of musical expression, a subcultural means of opposition, a cultural idiom of counter- hegemonic anger and rebellion, and an indicator that existing societies are structured according to a system of differences between dominant and subordinate classes, groups, races, and genders. Rap can force white audiences to reflect on their own racial construction, on the ways that whites oppress blacks, on the ways that their own subject positions are con- structed in opposition to an Other who is often presented in a negative light. Davis ABSTRACT This thesis shares interactive, performative stories regarding the intersection of gang culture and gangsta rap music. For a total of twenty-one days in a nine month span, I conducted ethnographic participant observation and in-depth interviews with sixteen former gang members and gangsta rap artists. While there I encountered, rode around, and hung with countless gang members belonging to both Crips and Bloods in South Central, Long Beach, Compton, and Inglewood. Although focusing on historic influences, this thesis travels through the present and positions itself as a future, utopic plot. The time period discussed in the thesis, 1986-1996, coincides with the first wave of gangsta rap and the years of active gangbanging and/or music training for these men. In the time discussed, the narratives and interviews have collectively shared one story: music was used to resist oppression while also reinforcing the oppressed mindset. By categorizing gangsta rap as a dystopian performative, I provide insight on the reality of music through reception and resistance of the LA Black Community. Through my journey to Los Angeles, I discovered that the reality of the music is deeper than the subculture; instead, it is planted in the larger community.
