Douglas Rushkoff The Simpsons are the closest thing in America to a national media literacy program. By pretending to be a kids’ cartoon, the show gets away with murder: that is, the virtual murder of our most coercive media iconography and techniques. For what began as entertaining interstitial material for an alternative network variety show has revealed itself, in the twenty-first century, as nothing short of a media revolu tion. Maybe that’s the very reason The Simpsons works so well. The Simpsons were bom to provide The Tracey Ullman Show with a way of cutting to commercial breaks. Their very function as a form of media was to bridge the discontinuity inherent to broadcast television. They existed to pave over the breaks. But rather than dampening the effects of these gaps in the broadcast stream, they heightened them. They acknowledged the jagged edges and recombinant forms behind the glossy patina of American television and, by doing so, initiated its deconstruction. They exist in the outlying suburbs of the American media landscape: the hinter lands of the Fox network. And living as they do—simultaneously a part of yet separate from the mainstream, primetime fare—they are able to bear witness to our cultural formulations and then comment upon them.

Modelling Suspicion as a Game Mechanism for Designing a Computer-Played Investigation Character Nahum Alvarez1 and Federico Peinado2 1 Production Department, Gameloft Tokyo 151-0061 Tokyo, Japan [email protected] 2 Departamento de Ingeniería del Software e Inteligencia Artificial, Facultad de Informática, Universidad Complutense de Madrid 28040 Madrid, Spain [email protected] Abstract. Nowadays creating believable characters is a top trend in the video game industry. Recent projects present new design concepts and improvements in artificial intelligence that are oriented to this goal. The expected behaviour of computer-played characters becomes increasingly demanding: proactivity, au- tonomous decision-making, social interaction, natural communication, reason- ing and knowledge management, etc. Our research project explores the possibil- ity for one of these characters to investigate, solving an enigma while dealing with incomplete information and the lies of other characters. In this paper we propose how to manage trust issues when modelling suspicion in the artificial mind of a Columbo-like detective, considering that our desired gameplay is a murder mystery game in which the player plays the role of the culprit. Keywords. Interactive Digital Storytelling, Video Game Design, Artificial In- telligence, Believable Characters, Epistemic Modal Logic, Trust Systems 1 Introduction Computer simulations allow a high grade of realism; however, computer-controlled characters in virtual worlds still feel like mere automatons: the user gives an input and receives a response. Advances in intelligent behaviour are changing the user experi- ence, improving these characters’ performance and expanding the scope of their po- tential uses. One aspect that refrain us from believing such characters are “alive” is that they seem completely “naive”: they will believe without doubts all the infor- mation received from other sources.

Comprehensive calendar ISSUE 30 Table of Contents Cover Story — Finally here? Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, work on the much ballyhooed Mayberry Man movie has continued, working around delays, postponements, and schedule changes. Now, the movie is just a few months away from release to its supporters, and hopefully, a public debut not too long afterward. CHAPTER XIII Rebel Ladies I will not attempt to describe [my] first interview with my family since the commencement of my exile in August.1 I was now with them at the house of my son-in-law Dr. B. B. Lenoir. But how altered that house, how changed his interesting family. Lenoir's is a principal and important sta tion and depot on the E. T. & G. R. R. twenty miles below Knoxville. In some respects it is the most valuable property in Tennessee or the West. It contains between two and three thousand acres of land, much of it island and river bottom. Upon it have been erected a cotton spinning fac tory, planing machines, mills and other large improvements of several kinds. When I last saw it before there were in its barns, cribs, meat houses, any extent of these supplies necessary for the subsistence of an army. The cellars were filled with groceries of all kinds. The forests on the property were scarcely excelled anywhere for their extent or their value. These extended to and embraced the dwelling house and the out buildings. The outstanding crop in August before promised a yield of _ About September I, the enemy came and took whatever of supplies they chose to of all kinds. They exhausted the smokehouse and cellar of all the necessaries of life, cut down the forests as they pleased, and erected in their fertile fields villas of cabins for their soldiers. They took possession of Dr. Lenoir's office and established in it their headquarters for General James M.

Abstract (Limit: 200 words) A laboratory-based linear loading pavement test stand, the Minnesota Accelerated Loading Facility (Minne-ALF) simulates the passage of heavy traffic loads moving at speeds up to 65 kph (40 mph) over small, full-scale pavement test slabs. Hydraulic actuators control a rocker beam, which simulates loads. Researchers simulated the passage of 40-KN (9-kip) single-wheel loads at a rate of 172,000 per day, although wheel loads up to 100 kN (22 kips) can be simulated at varying speeds. Full-axle simulations are possible with frame modifications. Concrete slabs were cast and dowels were installed in slots across crack/joints. Test variables included joint fact texture, repair backfill material, and dowel material and length.

Performance Testing for Superpave and Structural Validation PUBLICATION NO. FHWA-HRT-11-045 NOVEMBER 2012 Research, Development, and Technology Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center 6300 Georgetown Pike McLean, VA 22101-2296 FOREWORD This final report provides the comprehensive findings from two Transportation Pooled Fund (TPF) research projects, TPF-5(019): Full-Scale Accelerated Performance Testing for Superpave and Structural Validation and SPR-2(174): Accelerated Pavement Testing of Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt Pavements. The research identified candidate purchase specification tests for asphalt binder that better discriminate expected fatigue cracking and rutting performance than current SUperior PERforming Asphalt PAVEment (Superpave®) tests. Full-scale accelerated pavement testing and laboratory characterization tests on mixtures and binders provided the basis for the recommendations. This report documents a historical review of the development of asphalt binder performance specifications, experimental design, test pavement construction and performance, statistical methodology to rank and identify the strongest candidates, and all pertinent laboratory characterization of binders and mixtures that supplemented the recommendations. The research also provided a detailed case study of pavement evaluation using falling weight deflectometer and objective means to evaluate two emerging technologies; the asphalt mixture performance tester and the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide.(1) This document will be of interest to highway personnel involved with Superpave®, materials selection, performance specifications, and pavement design and evaluation. The bill is named after Peter Falk, the actor who played Columbo on TV. What it does seems basic — it simply allows families to see their loved ones when they become incapacitated. It’s about the power of guardians and the rights of some of the most vulnerable Coloradans. Peter Falk was known to TV viewers as the disheveled, endearing detective Columbo. Catherine Falk knew him as “Dad. “He was exactly the same on screen as off screen,” Catherine Falk said. “He was just this tender, really funny, goofy person.” But Peter Falk’s life would take a tragic turn when he developed Alzheimer’s disease. His second wife isolated him, forcing his daughter to go to probate court just to see her father before he died.

  • Crossroads Film and Television Program List
Crossroads Film and Television Program List This resource list will help expand your programmatic options for the Crossroads exhibition. Work with your local library, schools, and daycare centers to introduce age-appropriate books that focus on themes featured in the exhibition. Help libraries and bookstores to host book clubs, discussion programs or other learning opportunities, or develop a display with books on the subject. This list is not exhaustive or even all encompassing – it will simply get you started. Rural themes appeared in feature-length films from the beginning of silent movies. The subject matter appealed to audiences, many of whom had relatives or direct experience with life in rural America. Historian Hal Barron explores rural melodrama in “Rural America on the Silent Screen,” Agricultural History 80 (Fall 2006), pp. 383-410. Over the decades, film and television series dramatized, romanticized, sensationalized, and even trivialized rural life, landscapes and experiences. Audiences remained loyal, tuning in to series syndicated on non-network channels. Rural themes still appear in films and series, and treatments of the subject matter range from realistic to sensational. FEATURE LENGTH FILMS The following films are listed alphabetically and by Crossroads exhibit theme. Each film can be a basis for discussions of topics relevant to your state or community. Selected films are those that critics found compelling and that remain accessible. Identity Bridges of Madison County (1995) In rural Iowa in 1965, Italian war-bride Francesca Johnson begins to question her future when National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid pulls into her farm while her husband and children are away at the state fair, asking for directions to Roseman Bridge.
