Increasing Use of Antenatal Care Services NIGERIA Among Women in Sokoto State The Breakthrough RESEARCH project conducted a behavioral surveillance survey for health among women who had a pregnancy or birth in the previous two years. Survey Findings for Sokoto State The behavioral surveillance survey identified three important factors for improving women’s attendance of antenatal care four or more times (ANC4+) during pregnancy. M. Agaie, A. Salisu and A. A. Ebbo* Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, P.M.B 2346, Nigeria. Accepted 19 December, 2006 Through structured questionnaire, two hundred livestock farmers and veterinary attendants were interviewed on various aspects of poisonous plants in Sokoto State. Forty one (41) poisonous plants were reported to exist in the state. They include Ipomea asarifolia (Duman kada), Sorgum bicolar (Bahuri), Erythrophleum africana (Samberu), Calotropis procera (Tumfafiya) and Mannihot esculenta (Kunnen rogo). Majority of the plants are found in the grassland and are shrubs. Leaves stem and bark are the major parts of the plants that are poisonous when consumed by livestock. Politics and Influence in Northern Nigeria Summary points • Northern Nigeria is witnessing an upheaval in its political and social space. In 1999, important shifts in presidential politics led to the rebalancing of power relations between the north of Nigeria and the more economically productive south. This move triggered the unprecedented recalibration of influence held by northern leaders over the federal government. Goodluck Jonathan’s elevation to the presidency in 2010 upended the deal made by the political brokers of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to rotate power between the north and south, from which the party had derived much of its unity. • The decisive role played by the power shift issue in 15 years of democracy raises important questions about the long-term effectiveness of the elite pacts and regional rotation arrangements that have been used to manage the balance of power between the north and the south. It also highlights the fragility and uncertainties of Nigeria’s democratic transition, as well as the unresolved fault lines in national unity as the country commemorates the centenary of the unification of the north and south in 2014. • The significance and complexity of challenges in northern Nigeria make determining priorities for the region extremely difficult. Yet overcoming the north’s considerable problems relating to development and security are crucial to the realization of a shared and prosperous future for all of Nigeria. Strong economic growth in the past decade has provided the government with the opportunities and resources to pursue thoughtful strategies that can address the development deficit between the north and the more prosperous south as well as creating greater political inclusion. -

Department of Agricultural Technology, College of agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study examined the change in vegetation cover (land use cover) of Kebbe forest reserve, Kebbe local government area of Sokoto state. The research was divided into phases comprising satellite image sourcing; corrections of the images and classification of the land cover types based on the result from the ground truthing of the Kebbe Forest reserve. Two research hypotheses and research objectives were formulated for the study. Satellite images of 5 thematic mapper (TM) of 2003 and 8 operational land imager thermal infrared sensor (OLI-TIRS) of 2018 were selected for this study. The data were haze corrected using pancroma software with the Dark Object Subtraction (DOS) algorithm. The highest increase in area among the LUC between the dates is the shrub land with about 20.42% increase, which is from 138.42 to 881ha and the least being the sparse forest with 1.35% increase, also from 1309.59 to 1359ha of the reserve.
