This time of year is always filled with a sense of excitement as the season begins to change and we enter into the RCIA journey. We are blessed this year to have 9 catechumens and candidates who are beginning the RCIA journey along with their sponsors. I will be introducing and sharing more about the catechumens and candidates as the year unfolds, so that you will be able to journey with them too. As the RCIA class goes deeper into discovering the Catholic faith, many foundational concepts will unfold further and help them come to know Jesus Christ, the person, more and more. Your prayers, witness and example are essential to helping the catechumens and candidates understand the sacred truth, beauty and vibrancy of the Catholic faith that flows from a deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Most importantly, the authentic living out of the Gospel truth and message will serve as a catalyst not only to them, but to our entire parish and surrounding communities. I ask our parish family to please keep the catechumens and candidates in our RCIA class in your prayers, so that we may all draw deeper into the love of Christ. May our Blessed Mother, the Seat of Wisdom, pray for us and guide us ever closer to her Son. What is RCIA? The Holy Spirit draws all people toward Jesus Christ and his Church. Whether you already have a relationship with Christ and you are seeking his fullness or you really do not come from a religious background, the Church welcomes all people. The method by which people are welcomed is called RCIA, which stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a time to ask questions. It is a rite or ritual that welcomes all persons who wish to know more about Jesus Christ and His Church. Modeled after how the Early Christians brought people into the faith, RCIA offers those discerning the Catholic faith a season of consecutive courses and liturgies that slowly draw the person into a fuller and deeper understanding of the mysteries of the Christian life. -© St. Peter’s List, 2017 “Scarcely can we guess the things on earth, and only with difficulty grasp what is at hand; but things in heaven, who can search them out? Or who can know your counsel, unless you give Wisdom and send your holy spirit from on high? Thus were the paths of those on earth made straight, and people learned what pleases you, and were saved by Wisdom.” Wisdom 9: 16-18 Denise Gorski, Pastoral Minister 734-283-1366 x112 ■ [email protected]

IGNITE THE GOSPEL — Introduction When Archbishop Allen Vigneron issued his pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel on Pentecost 2017, he established some plans, dreams and standards for the in the Archdiocese of Detroit. He called for a change in the DNA of the archdiocese and urged us to become a joyful band of missionary disciples. This desire to send us outside the church walls to be evangelists who “unleash” the gospel is a huge responsibility. Because our 220 parishes have their own history, character and culture, many factors differ, so how a parish incorporates the archbishop’s letter will vary. Here at St. Cyprian, we spent the past year studying the archbishop’s letter at our Parish Pastoral Council meetings and the meetings of the Worship, Education, Christian Service and Stewardship Commissions. Each gathering studied parts of the pastoral letter and asked two questions: What are we already doing that can be enhanced or improved? Which new areas for spreading the gospel are available to us? I collected these thoughts, comments and ideas and have developed this pastoral letter to the people of St. Cyprian to guide us for the next three to five years. My hope is that we can work together on these commendations and recommendations to remain a dynamic, reverent, welcoming church community that continually seeks to grow in its relationship to Jesus Christ and be a model of that encounter for others. I see the gospel, the Good News of Christ, as a fuel which has been poured upon us, just as water washed us in baptism, and is ready to be ignited thereby moving us forward in faith.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 5 September 16, 2018

IGNITE OUR WORSHIP & MUSIC The first and most important thing we do is give God praise and worship for the blessings we receive every day. This is done during our celebration of the Eucharist (a word which means “to give thanks”) and in the many ways we pray as God’s holy people.

Commendations: ▪ People are welcomed warmly at the entrance to our church. ▪ Music is uplifting and inspiring, drawing from the wealth of chant, contemporary songs and traditional hymns and using a variety of instruments. ▪ Our level of participation in singing is always at a high. ▪ Liturgies are offered with dignity and sensitivity, using the prescribed ritual books. ▪ Homilies are biblically-rooted, memorable and reported to have broad application to the daily lives of parish members. ▪ Opportunities for community-building after liturgies are provided regularly. Recommendations: ▪ Offer Mass on one weekday evening to accommodate the diverse schedules of our parish members, many of whom cannot attend a morning liturgy. ▪ Create opportunities for Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration that can provide times for quiet reflection and the excitement of praise/worship. ▪ Introduce some devotional prayers on a seasonal basis. ▪ Consider help for private prayer after Communion. ▪ Develop an Intercessory Prayer Team that will receive formation and then pray for the general and specific needs of the parish.

IGNITE OUR SERVICE & OUTREACH During worship we are exposed to the wisdom found in the Sacred Scriptures and then motivated to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Such service is often directed toward the least, lost and last of God’s people. It may address material needs, injustice, , health and wellness or hospitality.

Commendations: • The Pantry serves 75-100 households weekly who suffer with food insufficiency. • The Giving Tree provides Christmas gifts for children and adults living in poverty, health care facilities, and families at risk. • Our parish is the point of service for the USDA supplemental food program for qualified Riverview residents. • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion bring the Eucharist to the sick in five Riverview health care and senior living residences each week. • Guests and first-timers are greeted at their seat, given a gift and an interest card. • New parish members receive a welcome package with an assortment of items including a St. Cyprian logo t- shirt. • Blood Drives and other health-related events are regularly offered.

Ignite the Gospel page 2

ST. CYPRIAN PARISH PAGE 6 RIVERVIEW, MICHIGAN

Recommendations: • Develop new ways to participate in events or activities that support the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, including the life and dignity of the human person, care of creation, rights of workers, and human solidarity. • Consider regularly scheduled gatherings to introduce new members to the parish staff, services, and facilities. • Inform recipients of pantry and other acts of generosity of church support and invite them to attend events at St. Cyprian. • Use available direct mail and social media resources to contact all homes in Riverview (and all Downriver) for invitation to Christmas, Holy Week and “shallow entry points.”

IGNITE OUR FORMATION & EDUCATION Education helps us know about Jesus Christ and Formation helps us to encounter him. Education and formation in the faith is a lifelong process. We raise our children in faith. We seek our opportunities to grow in adult faith. We hope to create individuals and families that are witnesses to Christ in the neighborhood and the world.

Commendations • Our religious formation efforts have a variety of programs that fit different ages of children and varying family schedules. • Preparation for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist are family-based and allow parents to fulfill their role as the first and most important catechists of their children. • Children’s Liturgy of the Word (Sunday morning dismissal) enables youngsters to hear the Good News at their own level while parents can remain in church for the Scripture readings and homily. • Middle-School and High School students are welcomed into Confirmation preparation and Youth Ministry events where they are accepted without questions or judgement. We accompany them on the journey of faith through educational, worship and service opportunities. • The Family Faith Committee hosts several gatherings each year that bring families together in the context of faith for an educational, creative or service event. • RCIA welcomes adults into a comprehensive process of becoming Catholic or completing one’s initiation. The full RCIA journey consists of periods of awakening, growth and formation to generate new life and members for the church. Recommendations • Develop a family Task Force to ensure that current and future efforts aid parents and children and youth to grow together in faith. • Assess the effectiveness of sacramental (Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage) preparation and make any changes that would deepen participants’ encounters with Christ and the church. • Seek experienced catechists to become involved in adult formation such as RCIA, Bible Study and other growth opportunities to deepen their ministry and assist parish formation efforts. • Strengthen and expand our Bible study and theology offerings for adult formation. • Identify people and issues that might be easily overlooked or marginalized, then build new opportunities to encounter Christ. • Develop new video presentations for website and mobile app as tools for evangelization. • Discover tools for evangelization that can be applied by parish members.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 7 September 16, 2018 IGNITE OUR STEWARDSHIP & FINANCES Care of Creation is the most basic element of stewardship. At the parish level, we are responsible for the property, buildings, facilities, and funds which have allowed us to serve the faith community from this location since 1955.

Commendations • 60+ year old parish complex is maintained in excellent condition. • Parking lot is regularly patched and was recently seal coated and re-striped. • Substantial funds saved for improvements and unexpected costs. • Parish budgets are always submitted to and approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit. • Meet our Catholic Services Appeal target each year. • Exceed goals for annual summer raffle. • Lease of classrooms to Creative Montessori and Riverview Community School District provide over $5000 monthly income. • Offer personal stewardship and financial planning for parish members. Recommendations • Ensure sufficient budgeting for mail, video production and online media. • Plan for and execute social hall renovations to improve utility, comfort and accessibility. • Expand efforts toward energy efficiency across parish complex. • Provide funding for participation in local events that will expose parish to public. • Develop new opportunities for members to steward their limited resources.

IGNITE OURSELVES & OUR PARISH — Conclusion Recently, we have observed a Year of Mercy declared by and a year drawing our attention to Encounter, Grow and Witness to Christ in preparation for the Archdiocesan Synod in 2016. These have helped us focus on the needs of others and our own thirst for a deeper, more meaningful relationship to Jesus. This means that on the parish level, we must regularly review our programs and processes to make sure they still meet our need to encounter, grow and witness. Because our worship and music must be pure. Our service must be humble, heartfelt and fitting. Our formation and education must draw us closer to Christ and the church. Our stewardship of resources must respect both the needs of the parish, physically and spiritually, and the limitations of financial supporters. I believe that we do all of this very well but can always do better to be faithful witnesses and become missionary disciples who live and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to a world which is hungry for it. If we allow the fuel of baptism poured upon us and the fuel of the Eucharist shared with us to be ignited, then we can surely set Riverview and all Downriver ablaze with faith that is grown and nurtured at St. Cyprian. This is the challenge and prayer I offer on this feast of our parish patron and the occasion of the parish picnic and summer raffle. All the Lord’s best
