Market Resources for Recycling Industries is a comprehensive compendium of Web- based resources that support the recycling industry. This reference tool is intended to save recycling entrepreneurs time in identifying available markets for recyclable materials. The document includes listings of brokers, collectors, processors, end-users, recyclers, and material recovery facilities.

ABOUT NERC

The Northeast Recycling Council, Inc. (NERC) is a regional non-profit organization that leverages the strengths and resources of its member states to advance an environmentally sustainable economy in the Northeast by promoting source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and the purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services.

NERC accomplishes this task by working with state agencies, trade associations, and other interested parties. NERC’s members are state recycling and economic development agencies, as well as solid waste authorities. Advisory members include utilities, trade associations, private businesses, state and regional recycling organizations, consultants, and other interested parties. A comprehensive directory of the recycling industry—from collection through end-users—that serves New York and the Northeast region is available: The New York State Recycling Markets Database (http://appcenter.nylovesbiz.com/esdrecycling/). This Database, which is maintained by NERC, is an online, searchable database of recycling markets. It includes information from collection through end- users.

The New York Recycling Markets Directory should be a first stop for anyone trying to locate brokers, collectors, Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs), processors, and recyclers.

The following table provides links to Web-based directories and listings that identify brokers, collectors, processors, end-users, recyclers, and MRFs. These directories cover many material areas. In the table, the directories that cover a variety of materials are identified as “multiple.” The categories included in the table below are:

The table is organized by material type, focus area served, and the types of recycling businesses and activities reflected in the directory. While many resources are focused on one or more states, rarely will the markets identified within that document be unique to the state in question. Rather, the document was prepared on behalf of that state or region.

The definitions used in the table are as follows: • Brokers are individuals, organizations, or companies who act as agents in the marketing of recyclables, for a fee or commission. Brokers negotiate a price for the materials and set up transportation to a buyer. They are not processors.

• Collectors are businesses or public sector sites that collect recyclables but may or may not process the materials, or sites that accept recyclable materials.

• Processors are those that transform materials into finished materials.

• End-users are companies that use recyclables as a raw material (feedstock) to make new products, or to supply a raw recycled material to another end-user.

• Recyclers are loosely defined as collectors, handlers, or processors of various materials.

• Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) are processing facilities where recyclables (typically paper, glass, metal, and plastics) are sorted and baled before being marketed to industries which use recycled materials.
