What Are Carnivorous Plants?
What are carnivorous plants? The famous historical naturalist, Charles Darwin described carnivorous plants as “The most wonderful plants in the world”. The Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus is quoted on carnivorous plants, “to think that plants ate insects would go against the order of nature as willed by God”. Against God’s will or not, we now know that Carnivorous plants are plants that eat small insects and animals. They thrive in wet, humid and nutrient poor environments. They trap and digest small invertebrates as a source of nitrogen to com- pensate the lack of nutrients in their habitat. Scientists believe that the carnivory gave them the evolution- ary advantage to grow in such nutrient poor environments where most other plants cannot survive. Most of you may naturally think that carnivorous plants are from warm tropical rain forests. However, they grow all over the world except antarctica. In fact, we do have 3 genera and 14 species of carnivorous plants in Rhode Island! They can be found in bogs, ponds and wetlands all around RI. Sarracenia The genus is also known as American pitcher plants. As the name suggests, they grow in North America and Canada. They employ pitcher shaped pitfall traps to capture their prey. The underside of the lid as well as the lips of the traps produce nectars that attract many insects such as fl ies and wasps. The prey falls into the trap because these parts of the plants are slippery. The prey won’t be able to get out of the trap easily, because the hairs inside the trap grow downWArds, and they will eventually be digested. -

Species Within the Genus Utricularia, Family Lentibulariaceae, Are Carnivorous, Herbaceous Aquatic Plants Commonly Known As Bladderworts
Species within the genus Utricularia, family Lentibulariaceae, are carnivorous, herbaceous aquatic plants commonly known as bladderworts. The common name refers to traps, or urn-like bladders borne on finely dissected leaves of the branches. The trapping mechanism consists of a bladder, a hanging door, and four stiff bristles attached to the lower edge of the door. Tiny animals, particularly crustaceans brush against the bristles causing the door to spring open. Water then rushes into the bladder and carries the animal with it. Once the bladder is filled, the door snaps shut. The prey is then digested by enzymes secreted by the plant. Bladderworts are perennial plants that are either aquatic free-floating plants without roots, or are terrestrial. Terrestrial in the sense that they are anchored to the substrate by underground creeping stems. Utricularia inflata and U. radiata are examples of species that are free-floating. These species have distinctive swollen branches that look like “floats” that radiate from a node of the flowering stem like spokes of a wheel. Utricularia resupinata and U. juncea are examples of species that are terrestrial. The lower portions of their stems are subterranean and form mats of branched slender rhizomes, usually in saturated sandy soils. The flowers of bladderworts are either yellow or purple. The flowers are 2-lipped, the upper lip is erect and the lower lip is usually 3-lobed with a spur, or tube-like projection. Flowers are borne on a leafless stem, or scape and are one to several flowered. Fruit is a pod with several seeds. Bladderworts can be identified when flowering without too much trouble, but they are often found only in their vegetative state. -

Remembering Frank Hirst and His Recollection of the Discovery of Utricularia Olivacea in New Jersey
BartoniaNo. 65: 112-114, 2011 Remembering Frank Hirst and His Recollection of the Discovery of Utricularia olivacea in New Jersey WILLIAM A. MCAVOY 1291 Fords Corner Road. Hartly, Delaware 19953 Frank Hirst (1928-2009), well-known field botanist and master plumber, passed away on August 3, 2009, at the age of 81 (see pp. 121-122 for obituary by Ronald Wilson). Frank was a New Jersey native and Pine Barrens botanist, but he and his wife, Jean, and two daughters moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland on the Delmarva Peninsula in 1971. Frank was a plumber by trade and a self-taught botanist. He was a member of the Philadelphia Botanical Club for 50 years and made many significant botanical discoveries, both in New Jersey, with his brother Bob Hirst (1925-1963; Evert 1964) (e.g., Hirst and Hirst 1962), and on the Delmarva Peninsula (e.g., Hirst 1983, 1990; Boone et al. 1984). During a conversation with Frank prior to his passing, he entertained me with a story about the discovery by him and his brother Bob of Utricularia olivacea Wright ex Griseb. in New Jersey back in 1958. I found his story to be very interesting and thought that this was a tale that others should know. Furthermore, what better way is there to remember Frank than to relive one of his many noteworthy botanical discoveries? Utricularia olivacea (dwarf bladderwort, minute bladderwort) is a diminutive, aquatic bladderwort no taller than 1 cm. It is usually found in ponds and depression wetlands, and often forms mats on the surface of the water. -
