According to officials, the animal was hanging by the snare wire by the Saving Liberal Democracy time rescuers reached the scene. The death was caused by asphyxiation due to the pressure exerted by the snare on the leopard’s diaphragm. A Wildlife official said that locals and estate managers have been constantly warned against the use of snares and their risk to wildlife, especially the leopard. The official added that estate management usually conducts daily checks to remove snares but it was difficult to do the same with locals because they think and act differently. The Sri Lankan Leopard, scientific name Panthera Pardus Kotiya, is a leopard subspecies endemic to the island. The Sri Lankan species has a tawny or rusty yellow coat with dark spots and close-set rosettes, which are smaller than in Indian leopard’s. The subspecies has allegedly adapted to become rather large, because it is an apex predator without competition by other large wild cat species in the country. Sri Lankan Leopards are found in all habitats throughout the island. In the Central Hills where the animals are mostly at risk, leopards have been found in forest patches, tea estates, grasslands, home gardens, and pine and eucalyptus plantations. They are lone hunters, with the exception of females with young. Both sexes live in overlapping territories with the ranges of males overlapping the smaller ranges of several females, as well as overlapping the ranges of neighbouring males. Sri Lankan leopards are usually nocturnal hunters, but are also active during dawn and dusk, and daytime hours. They rarely carry their kills onto trees like leopard subspecies in other parts of the world, which is likely because of the lack of competition and the relative abundance of prey. As the leopard is the apex predator in Sri Lanka, it does not By CHRIS PATTEN were threatened by the idea of freedom. independence, civic participation, and need to protect its prey.
