The “Medical ID” Feature on Apple's Health
The “Medical ID” Feature on Apple’s Health app For most people -- especially young adults -- a smartphone is everything. It’s a way to talk, text, take photos, play games, listen to music, read the news, and more. Now, the new iPhone Health app features a helpful medical tool: the Medical ID. The Medical ID shows important health-related information from the user. It is easy to set up and can be accessed by anyone in the event of an emergency. (NOTE: the “Medical ID” feature is only available on iPhones that have been updated to iOS 8. All photos are from Guiding Tech [http://www.guidingtech.com/33678/iphone-medical-id/].) Setting Up Your Medical ID 1. Open the Health app on your iPhone. At the bottom of the screen, tap the bottom right where it says Medical ID to get started. 2. On the next screen, you will be asked to create your own Medical ID. Once you do so, you will see the Show When Locked option. This will let anyone access your Medical ID even if your phone is locked and password-protected. This is important to do, so that your info can be viewed in case of an emergency. Check out www.GotTransition.org for health care transition tools and resources 3. Add your relevant health information into the app. You can add your name, photo, and all the information you would want others to know about your medical condition. This includes allergic reactions, medications, blood type, and if you are an organ donor. You can even add an emergency contact with his/her name and relation to you. -

Crowd Cycling: Understanding Cyclist Behaviour Using the Mobile Tracking App Strava
Crowd Cycling: Understanding cyclist behaviour using the mobile tracking app Strava Mark Dunleavy A research paper submitted to the University of Dublin, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Interactive Digital Media 2015 Declaration I declare that the work described in this research paper is, except where otherwise stated, entirely my own work and has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other university. Signed: ____________________________ Mark Dunleavy 14 May 2015 Permission to lend and/or copy I agree that Trinity College Library may lend or copy this research paper upon request. Signed: ____________________________ Mark Dunleavy 14 May 2015 Acknowledgement I would like to thank my research supervisor Professor Glenn Strong for his guidance and encouragement during this research. I would also like to thank my wonderful wife Jennifer for her support and amazing MS Word skills. Summary Concerns over traffic congestion, climate change and increased morbidity and mortality due to the rising rate of obesity have led to the promotion of cycling as a means to address all these issues simultaneously. Governments and city planners have created policies, and reserved significant funds, to promote cycling as a mode of transport. Many cities, however, have evolved for motor vehicles with little consideration for cyclists. In order to ensure that the cycle- friendly policies are implemented as efficiently and effectively as possible, planners need to understand how cyclists behave, both as individuals and as a group. Current information on cyclist behaviour is derived mainly from surveys and bicycle counting studies, providing a very limited snapshot of cyclist behaviour in cities. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2016 i Abstract Smartphones today are more advanced than they have ever been before with hardware sensors built into them to detect location, motion, as well ways to com- municate with third party hardware through bluetooth, and the internet through cellular or wifi. With the introduction of Apple’s App Store, and the Google Play store smartphone devices have been given features one would not think possible on a cell phone. One of the target categories for app developers is health, due to the sensors provided in current smartphones an application can be developed to track a user’s health. The apps currently on the market motivate users through mostly goal based challenges between themselves or their friends. HeartMate is an iOS mobile application that utilizes the sensors in the iPhone, and the use of a Bluetooth LE connected heart rate monitor to create a new competitive, motivational, real time social experience using heart rates as a performance measure. -

Technology Applications Center for Healthful Lifestyles Quarterly Report in Remote Patient Monitoring Report 1. Peripheral Devices for Blood Pressure Management This report is intended to serve as a quick guide for clinicians, researchers, and innovators who are interested in using mobile-based blood pressure monitoring devices in their research or practice. Access to key references and information relating to FDA clearance, validation data, Bluetooth capability, and other parameters is helpful toward navigating decisions about what devices may have the most utility. Devices are typically developed for iPhone (iOS) users but data suggest that 65% of MUSC patients are Android users, indicating a need for devices that function well with both operating systems. For more information on how these devices could be used in your clinic/research, please feel free to contact the Director of TACHL, Dr. Frank Treiber, at [email protected]. Our next report, which we will make available in January 2017, will address Remote Patient Weight Monitoring.
