13 ONE FIT PADDED HURDLES

One Fit Padded Hurdles were first introduced on British racecourses back in June 2013. Newton Abbot were the first course to use them and now another seven courses have followed.

The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed by the BHA’s Senior Inspector of Courses, Richard Linley, in consultation with relevant industry bodies, with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall.

The statistics show that the faller rate has reduced, and injury occurrence and the severity of injury is also reduced. From when they were first used in June 2013, up to January 10th 2018 there had been 9352 runners to 161 fallers. This equates to a faller rate of 1.72% which is considerably lower than the ten-year average of 2.18%.

We are pleased to be introducing One Fit Padded Hurdles to our track at the beginning of this year’s Jumps season.
