Abstract: In today’s society, consumers’ food needs can be satisfied by catering e-commerce platforms. However, the plastic pollution of tableware and packaging caused by a large number of catering orders every day has always been an unsolved environmental problem. (1) Background: At present, China’s three largest catering platforms, Meituan, Eleme and Baidu, receive 20 million takeout orders daily and consume about 60 million plastic products. Plastic pollution will have a sustained impact on the environment. (2) Methods: In this study, we use literature research and case analysis. We use Meituan’s takeout food as an example. We studied the takeout business growth, status of online takeout in the treatment of plastic packaging, harm to environment, humans and animals, as well as specific solutions. (3) Results: There are four main reasons which contribute to the plastic packaging pollution (i.e., high recycling cost, difficulty to deal with mixed plastic packaging, low Citation: Guo, M.; Wu, L.; Peng, J.; effectiveness of collecting plastic packing, and immature technology and treatment to incinerate Chiu, C.-H.

In Germany, as in other countries, litter from take aways and picnics is increasingly common in the country side – especially on the North Sea and Baltic coasts and on riverbanks – and municipal street and park cleaning services can no longer keep up. But even the vast major ity that ends up being incinerated or, ideally, recycled, represents a waste of natural resources, considering the availability of reusable alternatives. NABU has commissioned the first study since 1994 to investigate how much of Germany’s waste is caused by disposable tableware and takeaway packaging. The study also shows which materials are the most wide spread, and who puts them into circulation. 2 2. Marine litter Marine conservation meets resource conservation The oceans are suffering from increasing levels of litter pollution. Studies show that up to 13 million tonnes of land-based plastic waste ends up in the oceans each year.1 In Germany too, we have long been aware of the problem in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Green Event Policies at the Garden We ask you – our program leaders and participants, users and visitors – to please help us to pursue our mission and honor our LEED Platinum Certified Education Center. In an effort to conserve natural resources, we request that you hold sustainable, trash-free events when you rent our facility. We propose the following practices – some are required while others are suggestions – while preparing for your event. REQUIRED GUIDELINES The NCBG prohibits the use of any individually-sized plastic bottles or containers. For example, you may not provide your guests with bottles of water, but you may provide water in pitchers or bulk coolers. You can also encourage your guests to bring their own water bottle that they can refill in the water fountain! Also, distributing individually wrapped items (granola bars, bags of chips, snacks) is prohibited, and we ask that you serve food in bulk instead to event attendees to avoid contamination of our compost bin. Any disposable tableware that you use MUST be compostable – from plates to utensils to cups to coffee stirrers! The NCBG Events Manager will be happy to provide suggestions of where to buy these items in bulk. Please check which best green event practices you plan to implement at your event! Provide beverages in pitchers or bulk coolers Recycle! However, ensure that your plastic or other items can be locally recycled. Although many plastic products have a recycling logo, many cannot be locally recycled. Aluminum and steel can be recycled if they are clean of any food residue. Paper, newsprint and paperboard are all standard recycling items.

While it appears that disposable plastic tableware brings much convenience to our lives, it also poses unprecedented challenges to our ecosystem. “Disposable plastic tableware for a meal creates harm for hundreds of years”. Not only is used disposable plastic tableware difficult to decompose, much of such tableware entering the ocean will also have adverse impacts on our environment and ecology. For instance, if marine plastic waste is ingested accidentally by marine animals, it can cause intestinal blockage in these animals that may lead to death. During coastal clean-up events, it is common to find that disposable plastic tableware, such as plastic straws, spoons, forks, knives, cups and plates, scattered everywhere. Countless waste plastics enter the natural environment, including the ocean, each year. They will eventually be fragmented into microplastics and enter the human food chain.
