This river is the longest river which located just inside Iran and Ahvaz Metropolis drinking water supplied from Karun River as well (fa.alalam.ir). Karun River as the main source of water treatment plants in Ahvaz, like most surface waters affected by various contaminants which caused changes in water quality of the river (www.aww.co.ir). Causes such as constructing several dams at upstream river, withdrawal of water from the upstream to the needs of other regions of Iran, exposure of various industries along the river and discharge of industrial and urban sewage into the river, seen that today this river is deteriorating rapidly, qua today is the depth of river reach to 1 m with a high concentration of pollutants (www.tasnimnews.com).

  • PROTESTS and REGIME SUPPRESSION in POST-REVOLUTIONARY IRAN Saeid Golkar
THE WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR NEAR EAST POLICY n OCTOBER 2020 n PN85 PROTESTS AND REGIME SUPPRESSION IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY IRAN Saeid Golkar Green Movement members tangle with Basij and police forces, 2009. he nationwide protests that engulfed Iran in late 2019 were ostensibly a response to a 50 percent gasoline price hike enacted by the administration of President Hassan Rouhani.1 But in little time, complaints Textended to a broader critique of the leadership. Moreover, beyond the specific reasons for the protests, they appeared to reveal a deeper reality about Iran, both before and since the 1979 emergence of the Islamic Republic: its character as an inherently “revolutionary country” and a “movement society.”2 Since its formation, the Islamic Republic has seen multiple cycles of protest and revolt, ranging from ethnic movements in the early 1980s to urban riots in the early 1990s, student unrest spanning 1999–2003, the Green Movement response to the 2009 election, and upheaval in December 2017–January 2018. The last of these instances, like the current round, began with a focus on economic dissatisfaction and then spread to broader issues. All these movements were put down by the regime with characteristic brutality. © 2020 THE WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR NEAR EAST POLICY. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. SAEID GOLKAR In tracking and comparing protest dynamics and market deregulation, currency devaluation, and the regime responses since 1979, this study reveals that cutting of subsidies. These policies, however, spurred unrest has become more significant in scale, as well massive inflation, greater inequality, and a spate of as more secularized and violent.

  • Biofacies, Taphofacies, and Depositional Environments in the North of Neotethys Seaway (Qom Formation, Miocene, Central Iran)
Biofacies, taphofacies, and depositional environments in the north of Neotethys Seaway (Qom Formation, Miocene, Central Iran) Mahdiyeh Mahyad, Amrollah Safari *, Hossein Vaziri-Moghaddam, Ali Seyrafian Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Isfahan, Isfahan, 81746-73441, Iran *Corresponding author E-mails address: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract: This research attempted to reconstruct the sedimentary environment and depositional sequences of the Qom Formation in Central Iran, using biofacies and taphofacies analyses. The Qom Formation in the Andabad area with 220 m of thickness is located at N 3°48’12.6” and E 47°59’28”. The thickness of the Qom Formation in the Nowbaran area (N 35°05’22.5” and E 49°41’00”) was found to be 458 m. In both areas, the formation mainly consists of shale and limestone. The lower boundary between the Qom and Lower Red formations is unconformable in both areas. In the Nowbaran area, the Qom Formation is covered by recent alluvial sediments. In the Andabad area, the Qom Formation was unconformably overlaid by the Upper Red Formation. A total of 122 limestone and 15 shale rock samples were collected from the Andabad area, and 94 limestone and 24 shale rock samples were collected from the Nowbaran area. Analysis of the collected samples resulted in the recognition of nine biofacies, one terrigenous facies, and five taphofacies within the Qom Formation in the both areas. Based on the vertical distributions of biofacies, the Qom Formation is deposited on an open shelf carbonate platform. This carbonate platform can be divided into three subenvironments: inner shelf (restricted and semi-restricted lagoon), middle shelf, and outer shelf.

Chamran University, Ahwaz, Iran The Gotvand reservoir dam is located at SW of Iran where the Karun River orients from the Zagros Mountains. The nominal volume is 5,500 million cubic meters. It is a rock-fills dam with clay core. The height of crown is about 180 m with 130 m normal water depth. Depth from bottom (0-30 m), the water layer’s electrical conductivity (EC) will be as 150,000 to 85,000 mµ/cm. Also the EC will decrease from depth (85-30 m) corresponding the water layer’s EC between 85,000 to 20,000 µm/cm. Finally, at depth (30-0.0 m) the EC is controlled with values (15,000-1,000 µm/cm). The salty domes will produce unexpected salty sediments into reservoirs. Consulting engineering said that more than 8,000,000 tons of pure salt sediments were interned into the Gotvand Lake reservoir from 2011 through 2015. If this regime of salty material continues, downstream agricultural lands will completely disturb and disuses.

  • The Middle Cretaceous – Lower Miocene 3D Petroleum System Modeling of Kupal Oil Field, South West of Iran, Dezful Embayment
Archive of SID Geopersia 10 (1), 2020, PP. 165-194 DOI: 10.22059/GEOPE.2019.281259.648477 The Middle Cretaceous – Lower Miocene 3D petroleum system Modeling of Kupal Oil Field, South West of Iran, Dezful Embayment Mousa Zohrabzadeh1, Hossain Rahimpour–Bonab2*, Mohsen Aleali1 1 Department of Earth Sciences, Science and Research Branch, Islamic Azad University (IAU), Tehran, Iran 2 Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran *Corresponding author, e–mail: [email protected] (received: 13/05/2019 ; accepted: 11/12/2019) Abstract The Middle Cretaceous–Lower Miocene petroleum system of the Kupal oil field, located in the Dezful Embayment has been studied. The Kazhdumi and Pabdeh are main source rocks, the Sarvak, Ilam and Asmari formations are reservoir and the Gachsaran formation is the seal rock. According to geochemical analysis, the Kazhdumi and Pabdeh contributed to oil generation and feeding the Asmari and Bangestan reservoirs. Also, the lateral migration from the Kupal to other fields is ruled out but vertical migration led to feeding the Asmari and Bangestan reservoirs. Considering burial history diagrams and modeling of 3D petroleum system in the syncline area between the Marun and Kupal fields, oil generation phases from the Kazhdumi and Pabdeh formations were about 9 and 6 million years ago, respectively. Also in the syncline area between these structures (about 7 and 3 million years ago), the hydrocarbon expulsion started from the Kazhdumi and Pabdeh formations, respectively. Based on 3D hydrocarbon system modeling, in the drainage area of the Kupal oil field, about 51% of the hydrocarbon composition of the Kazhdumi source rock transformed into coke and consumed during the geological periods; but the Pabdeh source rock is remained intact, and only about 18% of the hydrocarbon composition of this formation is transformed into coke.

Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Shahrekord University, Shahrekord, Iran; E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Animal droppings constitute an ephemeral habitat where specialized invertebrate communities including significant abundance of mites live together. In order to study the Mesostigmata mites associated with manure, samples were taken from different manure types of domestic animals and poultry in Ahvaz and its vicinity in Khuzestan Province, southwestern of Iran, over a period of two years (2015-2017). Here we report 20 species belonging to eight families of Mesostigmata, among which 14 species are new records for the fauna of Khuzestan Province. The genus and species Leitneria pugio (Karg, 1961) is newly recorded from Iran. The genus and species were previously only recorded in Europe. Also, Uroobovella varians Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1962 is recorded for the first time from Iran based on deutonymph stage. We further provide collection data for each species along with a key for known Iranian species of the genus Uroobovella. KEY WORDS: Mesostigmata; Manure-inhabiting mites; Uroobovella; Ahvaz; Iran. PAPER INFO.: Received: 9 May 2018, Accepted: 10 August 2018, Published: 15 October 2018 INTRODUCTION Animal manures possess a rich fauna of arthropods including significant abundance of mites.
