Endurance Compassion 2018 ANN 2018 ANNUAL REPORT Compassion Endurance from Tina’s letter In reality, the process of “emotional healing takes time, just like physical healing. - Tina Cloer “ Dear friends, It brings me joy to know that we were able to help 40,777 children across the state in 2018. Each year I am amazed at how many children and families’ lives we collectively have the opportunity to impact. Last year, we stood beside 71 youth who graduated from high school and helped 51 of them begin some form of higher education. We supported 656 men in their journey to establish relationships with their kids and experience the joy of being active Dads. We celebrated beside each child who met their forever family through adoption. We saw countless women move forward by taking steps to break the chains of addiction and domestic violence in order to give their children safety and stability. We saw many of the youth served through our shelters and in foster care begin to heal from the effects of traumatic childhood experiences. I always tell our new employees that it would be wonderful if In reality, Children’s Bureau had the ability to wave a magic wand to make the recovery process for the children and families go more quick- the process of ly. But, in reality, the process of emotional healing takes time, much like physical healing. Because each person and each pain heals at a different rate, we must have compassion and provide hope to each Mom, Dad and child that we serve. I am especially proud of our staff who stand beside these families as they over- come their challenges, each at their own pace. just like physical I am thankful to see many examples of compassion endurance, not only in our staff but also in our volunteers, donors and community healing. partners. It would be easy to become overwhelmed with the need in our communities, but we continue to witness the positive impact of the compas- sion that drives us and renews our capacity for the next person in need. In the coming year, I look forward to implementing new strategies to help children and their families move forward toward well-being and self-sufficien- cy. I am grateful to each Auxiliary member, donor, volunteer, corporate partner, community leader and staff person who helps us better our communities one life at a time. I appreciate you for finding it in your hearts to show enduring compas- sion to the children and families in our community who so desperately need it. As someone whose family was served by Children’s Bureau and shown life changing generosity, I am living proof of the lasting impact of a caring community. • Coastal Erosion in the Intertidal Zone
Wesleyan University The Honors College Coastal Erosion in the Intertidal Zone by Marguerite K. Weisman Class of 2009 A thesis submitted to the faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Departmental Honors in English Middletown, Connecticut April, 2009 1 Introduction As legend would have it, when asked how he created his sculptural masterpiece, Michelangelo responded, “I could see David within the block of Marble. All I needed to do was chip away everything that was not David.” I believe that this logic applies to the formation of people as well. We are all born relatively formless. We go throughout life, allowing the world to crash against us, rub us away, and file us down. We find who we are, not through addition, but through what is left of us after life has had its way with us. All aspects of life have the capacity to mold us: places, people, and experiences. I lived exactly one half of my life on the Western coast of this country, in Los Angeles, and exactly one half on the Eastern coast, in Boston. I believe this dichotomy has had a profound effect on me; not only as a person, but also as a writer. In this thesis, I use the medium of short fiction to explore the concept of formation as erosion rather than development. All of my protagonists are experiencing formative periods and coming of age in there own way, whether they are twelve years old or twenty-two. They are also all experiencing loss, in the same way that are coast lines are using a few inches every year, shaping the ever-changing American landscape.

  • Gathered View
The Gathered View National Newsletter of the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) IMPORTANT: New School Discipline Resource for Parents and School Professionals By Evan Farrar, M.A. Crisis Intervention and Family Support Counselor, PWSA (USA) Due to behavioral issues, students with PWS are at risk for suspensions and even expulsion. Preliminary results from PWSA (USA)’s national school survey indicates that 25% of students with PWS have been suspended at least once and 5% of students with PWS have been expelled. Tis experience is not unique to students with PWS. A 2014 report from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights reported overall: t Students with disabilities are more than twice as likely to receive an out-of-school suspension than students without disabilities. t With the exception of Latino and Asian-American students, more than one out of four boys of color with disabilities (served by IDEA) – and nearly one in five girls of color with disabilities – receive an out-of-school suspension. t Students with disabilities (served by IDEA) represent a quarter of students arrested and referred to law enforcement, even though they are only 12% of the overall student population. t Students with disabilities (served by IDEA) represent 12% of the student population, but 58% of those are placed in seclusion, and 75% are physically restrained at school to immobilize them or reduce their ability to move freely. t African-American students represent 19% of students with disabilities served by IDEA, but 36% of these students are restrained at school through the use of a mechanical device or equipment designed to restrict their freedom of move- ment.

2018 Edition JCC Ranch Camp, 21441 North Elbert Road, Elbert, CO 80106 Summer Office: 303-648-3800 [email protected] www.ranchcamp.org Rav todot, many thanks, to Carly Coons for recognizing that it was time for an update to our Ranch Camp songbook. With popular hits of its time becoming less familiar, and newer favorites missing, a new compilation was in order. Our songbook nonetheless provided an excellent foundation upon which to build. We would be remiss not to credit Matt Cohen, Polly Hall, and Dan Yolles for their work, which remains the single largest contribution to the current edition. Deepest thanks to those that contributed their time and feedback to this collection. Brynn Tully, Amy Stein Miller, Amalia Ritter, Dan Yolles, and Debra Winter put thought and spirit into the production of this book, including meticulous chord notation. It must be said that this songbook is “Tam v’lo nishlam,” finished, but not yet complete. Brynn and Carly will be tasked with implementing this collection over the course of Summer 2018 with the goal of producing a final edition after integrating feedback from our Ranch Camp Kehila. • From the Head
ISSUE 30 | SPRING 2020 From the Head It is difficult to imagine half a school year passing by more quickly or enjoyably. It seems only yesterday that I first arrived at King Edward’s, and yet I now feel so very settled in this wonderful School – proverbially part of the furniture! Of course, this has been helped immeasurably by the support and goodwill of the pupils; our parents and my colleagues, who have all been so ready to bid me welcome, exchange a smile and a pleasantry, and (occasionally) point me in the right direction. From seeing the School over the past months, I know too that a similar welcome has met each of our new students: they too have settled quickly in to KES life with much help and support from our extended community. So I now feel in a much better position to pass on some collected ‘first impressions’ of King Edward’s… How would I characterise our School? Many is to create a school where kindness sits alongside the adjectives spring to mind: vibrant, busy, bustling, highest levels of academic ambition and breadth of aspirational, ambitious. Just to glance back over the opportunity at the very heart of all that we do. But I also last term of academic, sporting, charitable and artistic want to ensure that we are a place where young people achievements - as ‘The Edwardian’ does here - is to well-suited to our school, irrespective of background, marvel in how we manage to fit it all in! But before any can benefit from attending this outstanding institution.
