COMMODORE

Hi Members

Well finally the old pontoon is back in place and seems to be working well. My thanks must go to Len Brown who under Towing the pile some duress has put the finishing driver barge from touches to it (Handrails for the Port Huon (thanks Skiffs and finishing off the ramp to to Bob Cleary) the old Pontoon). A lot of members do not realise how much work and hours that he has put in and a few had their own ideas how it should be done. I do not know how many times that I have to say if anybody has any remarks about volunteers work do not approach the member but get in touch with me. Anyway job well done Len.

Regatta time is almost with us again. It should be a good regatta weekend this one thanks to Jeff Rowe and his team. We started planning early this year and I think it has paid off. If anybody can help on the weekend with a variety of jobs please let Jeff Rowe or myself know. The Regatta is the Highlight of our Sailing Season and is always well supported.

The two Slips are flat out at the moment so if any member is thinking of slipping their boat I would advise you to book as soon as possible Both of the Slips are booked out until the middle of February and I am getting calls every day and night!!!.

I must take this opportunity to thank Gary Pritchard for taking over the Membership Officers position. His interesting and lively emails are like a breath of fresh air. Great work Gary keep it up.

See you on the water.

VICE COMMODORE

Hi All

I hope you are all enjoying our 2017/18 season as much as I am – it’s shaping up as a really great one! Lots of us are sailing each week, competing in Sunday races or Tuesday twilights; our racing fleets include Etchells and Solings and also a growing fleet of cruising boats; our rowing skiffs are being enjoyed by our band of keen rowers, with trips incorporating picnic lunches and coffee stops; our twilight barbeques are, as always, well supported; Friday night happy hour and a halfs are proving extremely popular; radio controlled yacht racing continues to be very popular; junior sailing is as popular as ever; and the club house and facilities are in regular use, including by our contingent of summer time live-aboards. Our Melbourne Cup event Melbourne Cup day was again well attended, with the fashions on the field judged by the – the boys and the girls Commissioner Adriana Taylor.

All of which is made possible by our dedicated band of volunteers – bar helpers, race officials, handicapper, barbeque chefs, safety boat skippers and crew, and of course the ladies. The extra social events this year has seen the demand on our volunteers’ time increase, so many thanks to all involved. (and a special note - our weary racers were very appreciative of having the bar open after our long distance races this year).

Our October Opening Day was a great success, including afternoon tea, sail past, keelboat race (with the skiffs as well), dinghy racing, and model boats. The best dressed boat and crew award, as judged by Kate Doolan, went to Chris Holliday and the crew on Bess.

The old pontoon has been located in place, connecting ramp installed, and new ladders built to make getting in and out of the skiffs easier. We now have a permanent berth for both the skiffs, as well as parking for dinghies and tenders, which is getting plenty of use.

Many thanks to the jetty committee for making all that happen, with special thanks to Len Brown for his work on the connecting ramp and ladders in particular.

A good roll up of helpers for our clean up day, coordinated by Alison to happen at a very low tide, saw the removal from the beach of the remains of the oysters and mussels from the bottom of the old pontoon, as well as from the foreshore and fixed jetty. Thanks to everyone involved.

No doubt everyone is looking forward to the biggest event on the club’s annual calendar, our regatta, and Jeff Rowe has things well under control as preparations proceed. Check out the website!

See you on the water or at the club. Cheers

Friday nights – Kelvin and Gary on the BBQ, and members gathered on the balcony.

REAR COMMODORE

The TGIF Drinks on Friday evenings have proved to be a successful move. The Happy Hour and a Half especially so. The BBQs have been well utilised and for those that do not like to prepare their own food pizzas have been the go. We will see how it is going by the end of February and decide whether to keep it going or have a break with the shorter days on the way.

Tuesday twilight got off to a great start with every seat in the clubroom taken and quite a few people sitting at the outside benches. The very reasonably priced salad and choice of meat main OFFICE BEARERS course, and of course, an abundance of mouth watering desserts were a big hit with members and visitors alike. The bar also did a good Commodore trade with the newly stocked pinot grigio white wine and white rabbit Bruce Barnett dark ale proving popular. Vice Commodore John Deveraux We have the Folk Festival Sea Shanties and, a little further down the track, our annual Regatta, to add to the coffers for the club. These Rear Commodore functions do not run themselves and I would like to thank those Rob Cooper volunteers running the bar, cooking food, and helping out in the Treasurer kitchen, for making it all possible. If anyone reading this thinks they Kelvin O’Connor may have an hour or two to spare, and would like to help out, you Secretary Chris Holliday would be most welcome. JUNIOR SAILING REPORT

Wow what a start to the year. We had a bumper intake of new recruits. 12 beginners was a huge undertaking and as I had to be out of the country for several weeks. I would like to give a big thank you to Ashika Gray, Chris Wilson and Mike Rowe for taking on the responsibility. As always, they were ably assisted by safety boat drivers and the ever-patient Assistant Instructors.

Big thanks also to everyone who helped move the oysters, left from cleaning the old pontoon, off the beach. Great team effort.

We were lucky to be able to borrow 2 Optimists from Lindisfarne SC. The Optimists were a great hit, especially with some of our very capable but smaller juniors, who don’t often get the opportunity to be out in a boat on their own. Lindisfarne wants to sell 4 Optimists and we considering how we could fund their purchase.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the club Facebook page, there are some great photos and videos uploaded.

LAURA

A row to Lymington with songs and a scattering of flowers and petals followed by a feast at the club house in Cygnet brought together local communities in a celebration of Laura Golding’s life. One of our club members and active skiff rower, Laura died in a tragic boating accident in November 2017. She will be sadly missed.

Lots of tales were told at Laura’s Feast of her determination that made her a club top scorer as strong commitment to the Cygnet and Franklin a terrier of a left winger (soccer, that is, though communities — her rowing skills, her artistry, her she was definitely of the political Left persuasion) commitment to the environment and to animals . . . That so many wanted to pay tribute to Laura especially, her caring (porridge every morning) was a measure of the valley community’s loss for the Cygnet Community Garden chooks; a and its regard for all she did.

Port Cygnet Sailing Club Regatta 2018 –

As all members would be aware, our Port Cygnet Sailing Club Regatta is the major event in the Club’s calendar. The Regatta is one of those special events that draws Tasmanian sailors and their yachts together to enjoy the best of the d’Entrecasteaux Channel.

Whilst it’s still early days, we have until the long weekend, 9 – 12 March 2018 to put things together, we’re very aware that time flies so the decision has been made to get things rolling a bit earlier this year. We’ve held our first meetings (September & December) at the Club to help make this event the best ever.

I am sure that all would agree that it is an ‘all hands on deck’ effort that has made the past Regattas so successful. And it provides a great opportunity for all members to get involved, even if you’re a sailing participant, as most of us will be. Jeff Rowe

ADULT SAIL TRAINING

We are aiming to start on Saturday Feb 10 2018 at 1400 hours (2pm), shortly after the junior sailors finish. Buy your tickets at https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=346465 and this will ensure your place is booked. Cost will be $300 per participant (concessions available). This will enrol people with Australian Sailing (AS), provide them with an AS number and will include personal accident insurance while taking part in a training program. It will include, for introductory sailors, Australian Sailing’s Introduction to Sailing textbook @ $45 (included in the enrolment fee). PCSC membership subsequent to enrolling in the course may attract a discount of $60 (the application fee) but this has yet to be accepted by committee. Contact Chris Wilson at PCSC for further details. PCSC is an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, hopefully to shortly add an adult keelboat sail training pathway, following on from the continuing success of the junior sail training group. The curriculum can be seen at http://wp-test5.sportingpulse.com/education-training/programs-and-courses/keelboat- program/ The club will make available its Etchells sailboat Bushido, previously owned by Phil Jeffs, now known as Disgratziato and Paul MacMichael has donated his Soling Fair Dinkum, to the club for racing use and sail training. Each boat can take 4 people and that is the ideal number per class for personalised sailing tuition for new or experienced sailors. There is also the possibility of using a Farrier 31 foot trimaran, Fleetwing. This would be an ideal learn to sail boat being fast and stable, capable of taking 4 - 6 people comfortably out to Bruny Island and return in a 3 - 4 hour sail. There is a porta potti on board and food and hot drinks can be served, and there is lots of protection from the elements, should that become important. It is also an ideal boat to conduct Discover Sailing Days (free 1 hour trips on Discover Sailing Days), and Discover Sailing experiences, a 3 - 4 hour sailing trip that will cost a nominal fee, around $50 per person.
