Previous meetings • The sides met for the first time in UEFA competition in the first leg, when Rafa Silva's 61st-minute goal earned Braga victory. Nikola Stoiljković put the Arsenalistas ahead, with Moussa Konaté levelling for Sion early in the second half. Braga's Nikola Vukčević was sent off late on. • Braga are unbeaten in four games against Swiss sides (W2 D2 L0), including eliminating BSC Young Boys in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League play-offs. • Sion lost 6-2 on aggregate to FC Porto in the 1992/93 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round in their only previous tie against Portuguese opposition. Form guide • Braga have won all three of their European home matches this season – all by a one-goal margin. Sion's group stage away record was W1 D1 L1. • Losing finalists in 2011 – when they transferred over after the UEFA Champions League group stage – Braga have now made it to the round of 32 from all five of their UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns. • Sion are playing in the spring phase of a UEFA competition for the first time since losing to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the 1986/87 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals. Trivia and links • The journey from Sion to Braga is just short of 1,400km. The coaches • Appointed to the Braga hot seat last summer, former defender Paulo Fonseca, 42, had a low-key playing career. Having made his name in the second division as boss of CD Aves, Fonseca twice coached FC Paços de Ferreira in the top flight either side of a stint at FC Porto, where he was once on the books as a player. • A UEFA Cup finalist with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in 1996, French striker Didier Tholot ended his playing career as player-coach at Sion and took charge of the club for a third time in 2014. He led Sion to Swiss Cup success in 2009 during his second spell and lifted that trophy again last term. Penalty shoot-outs • Braga won their only previous UEFA penalty shoot-out: W 5-4 A v Udinese Calcio (2012/13 UEFA Champions League play-offs) • Sion have lost both of their UEFA penalty shoot-outs: L 5-4 H v Malmö FF (1974/75 European Cup Winners' Cup first round) L 5-3 A v Feyenoord (1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup second round) 3 SC Braga - FC Sion Wednesday 24 February 2016 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Estádio Municipal de Braga, Braga Team facts SC Braga Formed: 1921 Nickname: Os Arsenalistas (The Arsenal fans) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Europa League: (2011) • UEFA Intertoto Cup (1): 2008 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) Portuguese Cup: 1 (1966) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2013/14: play-offs 2012/13: UEFA Champions League group stage 2011/12: round of 32 2010/11: runners-up (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2009/10: third qualifying round 2008/09: round of 16 2007/08: round of 32 2006/07: round of 16 2005/06: first round Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-0: Braga v Hibernians FC 13/09/78, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Biggest away win 1-3: Birmingham City FC v Braga 15/09/11, UEFA Europa League group stage 0-2: FC Artmedia Petržalka v Braga 02/10/08, UEFA Cup first round second leg 0-2: Galatasaray AŞ v Braga 02/10/12, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Braga v FC Shakhtar Donetsk 28/09/10, UEFA Champions League group stage 0-3: Braga v Tottenham Hotspur FC 19/09/84, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: Arsenal FC v Braga 15/09/10, UEFA Champions League group stage 6-0: Tottenham Hotspur FC v Braga 03/10/84, UEFA Cup first round second leg UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 5-0: Braga v Hibernians FC (see above) • Biggest away win 1-3: Birmingham City FC v Braga (see above) 0-2: FC Artmedia Petržalka v Braga (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Braga v Tottenham Hotspur FC (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: Tottenham Hotspur FC v Braga (see above) FC Sion 4 SC Braga - FC Sion Wednesday 24 February 2016 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Estádio Municipal de Braga, Braga Formed: 1909 Nickname: Les Sédunois (local name for Sion natives) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 2 (1997) Swiss Cup: 13 (2015) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: play-offs 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: play-offs 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2007/08: first round 2006/07: first round 2005/06: did not take part in UEFA club competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-1: Sion v Galatasaray AŞ 15/09/65, European Cup Winners' Cup preliminary round first leg 4-0: Sion v AS Jeunesse Esch 23/07/97, UEFA Champions League first qualifying round first leg • Biggest away win 0-4: FC Vinnytsa v Sion 26/09/96, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-4: Sion v Galatasaray AŞ 13/08/97, UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg 1-4: Sion v Aberdeen FC 01/09/82, European Cup Winners' Cup preliminary round second leg 0-3 (forfeit): Sion v Celtic FC 25/08/11, UEFA Europa League play-off second leg • Heaviest away defeat 8-1: 1.
