AZHWARS – 12 Vaishnavite Saints who had totally surrendered unto the Holy feet of Sriman Narayana. The below mentioned song is the benedictory verse of Manavala Mamunigal in his work Upadesa rathina malai.. Contd..2 -2- AzhwArgal vAzhi aruLichcheyal vAzhi thAzhvAdhumil kuravar thAm vAzhi – yEzhpArum uyya avargaL uraiththavaigaL thAm vAzhi seyyamaRai thannudanE sErndhu Meaning : May the divine azhwars live long! May their works, the divya prabandhams, live long! May the spotless poorvacharyas live long! May their accurate commentaries, which were generously offered so that people of the seven worlds can benefit from them; live long along with the sanskrit vedas! AZHWARS Azhwars are divine poets absorbed in Bhakti towards Sriman Narayana. Since they are always immersed (Azhndhu, tamil word for "in depth") in kalyana gunas (the most auspicious attributes) of Sriman Narayana, they are called Azhwars. Azhwars are known as Nityasuris or Divyasuris; those who reside permanently with the Lord in His Heavenly abode. They had incarnated as Vasihnavite Saints to propagate Bhakthi Marga - devotion towards Lord Vishnu in the 4th-9th centuries A.D. Contd..3 -3- There are 12 Azhwars, who are the main authors of Naalayira Divya Prabandham - 4000 poetic hymns sung in praise of Sriman Narayana, at various sacred shrines known as "Divya Desams" (108 in total). Divya Prabandham, in its present form was compiled by Nathamunigal during the 9th – 10th centuries. They are an incredible synthesis of poetic beauty, rhythmic magnificence, literary brilliance, spiritual loveliness and philosophical wisdom appealing to the head and heart of the masses. The Twelve Azhwars are : 1. PoigaiAzhwar 2. BoothathAzhwar 3.

The growth, strength and inter- supportiveness of these four pillars are key to spreading of the Swaminarayan Faith. Lord Shree Swaminarayan has acknowledged these pillars and laid down the key responsibilities for each of the pillars. He instructed his Nand-Santos to write Shastras which helped the devotees to perform devotion (Bhakti), acquire true knowledge (Gnan), practice righteous living (Dharma) and develop non- attachment to every thing material except Supreme God, Lord Shree Swaminarayan (Vairagya). There are nine types of bhakti, of which, Lord Shree Swaminarayan has singled out Kirtan Bhakti as one of the most important and fundamental in our devotion to God.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Introduction Bollywood in Australia Andrew Hassam and Makand Paranjape The global context of Bollywood in Australia Makarand Paranjape The transcultural character and reach of Bollywood cinema has been gradually more visible and obvious over the last two decades. What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. Hence, at its most basic, this book explores the conjunctures and ruptures between these three forces: Bollywood, Australia and their interface, the diaspora. 1 Bollywood in Australia It would be useful to see, at the outset, how Bollywood here refers not only to the Bombay film industry, but is symbolic of the Indian and even the South Asian film industry.

Preface: Tirth Yatras or pilgrimages have been an integral part of Hinduism. Pilgrimages are considered quite important by the ritualistic followers of Sanathana dharma. There are a few centers of sacredness, which are held at high esteem by the ardent devotees who dream to travel and worship God in these holy places. All these holy sites have some mythological significance attached to them. When people go to a temple, they say they go for Darsan – of the image of the presiding deity. The pinnacle act of Hindu worship is to stand in the presence of the deity and to look upon the image so as to see and be seen by the deity and to gain the blessings. There are thousands of Siva sthalams- pilgrimage sites - renowned for their divine images. And it is for the Darsan of these divine images as well the pilgrimage places themselves - which are believed to be the natural places where Gods have dwelled - the pilgrimage is made.
