TIRUCHIRAPPALLI DISTRICT PROFILE ‐ IN A NUTSHELL
The profile on Tiruchirappalli district is prepared along with the District Statistical Handbook as a ready reckoner to have a quick glance over the statistical data on Tiruchirappalli district for the year 2016‐17 with special focus on demography, agriculture, health and education. The crisp data and tables presented in this profile have been collected from various state and central government departments, public sector undertakings, educational institutions and various other organisations.
The district profile brings out the following remarkable facts.
¾ According to 2011 census, the district ranks 11th in female sex ratio with 1013 against the state ratio of 996. But, stands in the 17th place with respect to the 0‐6 years children sex ratio (947), which is still higher than the state’s children sex ratio of 943. ¾ Similarly the district stands in 10th rank in both the total literacy rate and female literacy rate which is fairly higher than the state’s average rates. Obviously the district prevails in a better place as far as education is concerned. ¾ The district has a work force of 30.5 percentage of its total population (main and marginal workers). The majority of them belong to the category of Agricultural Labourers. ¾ As per the Net District Domestic Product report 2010‐11, the per capita income (at current prices) of the District is Rs.91884/‐ with an average growth rate of 19.19 which is clearly above the state’s figures of Rs.78473/‐ and 17.39 respectively. These figures reveal the fact that the district has a better economic growth. ¾ In the year 2016‐17, the district did not receive good rainfall. The actual annual rainfall recorded is 52 % less than the normal rainfall (818m.m) for the entire district. In spite of low rainfall the net area cultivated has decreased only marginally.

¾ In respect to agriculture sector, the gross cultivated area of food crops have recorded a significant decrease of 67% over the previous fasli year. Net cultivated area decreased sharply by 74%.similarly gross cultivated area showed significant reduction in 71% . significantly.Area cultivated more than once also showed remarkable decrease of 44%. ¾ ‘G’ return figures for the last two years show that area of principal crops such as paddy ( 58571 Ha ‐ 27067 Ha),black gram (8900 Ha ‐ 3544 Ha) banana (7002Ha ‐ 6777 Ha)and groundnut (9455 Ha ‐ 7414 Ha) sugarcane (2699 Ha ‐ 2383 Ha), ), jowar (27986 Ha ‐ 20167 Ha) and Maize (12686 Ha ‐ 11011 Ha) showed sharp decline where as tapioca (3847 Ha ‐ 5008 Ha) area has increased by30 %.
