On February 25th, it was announced via the St. Kitts Music Festival Facebook fan page, that Damian “JR Gong” Marley is set to perform at this year’s annual event. Don Beale, one of the re-enactors told SKNIS that his team was prepared to make this as close to the real thing as possible with pockets of dramatic intensity during re-enactments of the skirmishes and ambushes that took place. He explained that the British Brigade was excited about combining with the local members of the St. Kitts Nevis Defense Force who will form part of the team to create a realistic battle. He said this would involve machete wielding and simulated bloodshed. “The history of the actual skirmishes that took place over the period of the thirty day siege of Brimstone Hill is actually quite fascinating. Machete bearing locals would triumph over soldiers with swords and bayonets. It was unbelievable and we look forward to recreating this for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Beale emphasized. “An added attraction to the choreographed event is that it will feature the clothing of the period in which the Battle was fought and maintain cultural correctness,” Beale emphasized. He expressed gratitude to the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society and the St. Kitts Tourism Authority for the additional activities which have been planned for the re-enactors, giving them a chance to enjoy St. Kitts and Nevis as a travel destination as well. The full team of re-enactors arrived in the Federation on Wednesday and are expected to leave on Sunday April 1. Other scheduled activities include a cocktail reception at Government House and a complimentary tour aboard the St. Kitts Scenic Railway on Saturday. Entrance to the event March 29th and 30th is the regular Brimstone Hill entry fee of E.C$10 for local adults and $5 for children as well as U.S. $8 for non-nationals. The PAM Government imposed a Customs Service Charge on all goods entering our country. This Service Charge was in addition to the regular Customs Duty, so importers had to pay Customs Duty in addition to the Customs Service Charge. The Ministry of Finance used to tell importers that while the Ministry could waive the Customs Duty at times, the Ministry could not waive the Customs Service Charge. Naturally when a Service Charge was paid on top of Customs Duty the price of goods to the consumer would go up. The PAM Government cared naught about the welfare of the poor, the sick and the needy. In spite of the hardships which the PAM Government had already imposed, the said government went ahead and increased the fees to the general public for all services rendered at the J.N.F. General Hospital. Included in the increase were the fees paid for patients to stay in a private room or in a private ward at the Hospital. The Government hit you in your pocket when you are well and even when you are sick. Even the rates for telephone calls were increased. SKANTEL upped the rates for both local and overseas telephone calls. Poor people were hit with increased costs and prices, everywhere they turned, whether they were sick or well. During this period of extreme hardship, PAM of course was boasting that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis never had it so good. Of course the party was referring to the abolition of Personal Income Tax. But the fact of the matter is that the abolition of Personal Income Tax could only benefit those who paid the Tax. The masses of people never paid Income Tax. It was very ironic that while the PAM party was boasting that our country never had it so good; the UNDP/FAO was holding a regional meeting in Peru or in Chile in South America. During the course of the meeting the UNDP/FAO issued a Regional report on Latin America and the Caribbean. The Prime Minster, as he brought words of congratulation, reminded graduates of their role alongside other security forces as part of the first line of defense in this country. He reiterated that the many social services offered by Government come with a cost that depends heavily on the duties levied and revenue collected by customs and excise. “As I said to you when we met at Spice Mill restaurant almost two months ago” said Prime Minister Douglas, “you are now part of the first line of defense along with our Immigration officials, and those in the security forces in the defense of our nation.” “It costs money therefore to run a government” said Dr. Douglas, “and it is therefore essential that we remember and we understand that the fair and courteous collection of fees and duties by you our officers is your way of contributing to the Government’s programmes to provide education, healthcare, to upkeep our highways and all the other services that we all wish for all of us as citizens of this country that we all love so much.” The Finance Minister said just as Government is committed to the modernization of Customs through technology, the highest possible professionalism and the fairest treatment of customers will be expected. He told the graduates vigilance must be the key as they partner with other Government departments like the St. Kitts Air and Seaports Authority (SCASPA), the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and the Police and Defense Forces. The feature address was delivered by the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Representative to St. Kitts and Nevis Mr. Starret Greene. Ambassador Greene, like speakers before him, admonished graduates to strive for a culture of professionalism and named it the hallmark of survival for any company or agency. Remaining resolute and purposeful and showing strength of character and will, were some words of advice given by the Ambassador. “.and so graduates, as you return to your workstations tomorrow to discharge your assigned duties I exhort you to let professionalism be your guide” said Ambassador Greene. “By this I mean take pride in yourself and your work.” “Remain resolute and purposeful, be organized, show fortitude under pressure, refuse no opportunity for developing your knowledge and mind, show strength of character and will” Ambassador Greene said. “Exercise self control at all times, let integrity be your moral compass. Be sociable at the right time and under the right circumstances. Strive to be a person of distinction, always be accountable and responsible.”
