Contents The purpose of prophecy The prophets of the Bible did not necessarily foretell the future when they spoke. It has been truly said that their mission was to forthtell rather than to foretell. Nevertheless, the gospel is the good news of the Kingdom, a Kingdom yet to be established; and of necessity therefore prophets, and apostles for that matter, spoke often of the future. It is possible, though, to think of prophecy in a narrower sense, to distinguish God’s revelation of His purpose in the earth from His revelation of what is to happen on the way to the fulfilment of that purpose. The latter is what we will consider in this chapter: prophecies which have largely been fulfilled already. What then is the purpose of such prophecy? We propose to offer five lines of approach, overlapping to some extent, but each worth identifying and considering separately. Fulfilled prophecy: • establishes the existence of God • establishes that the Bible is God’s Word • enables us to believe that prophecies about God’s Kingdom will be fulfilled • demonstrates that God is at work in the world • shows us where we are in God’s plan. ‘Spirit’ in the New Testament. It is a fundamental characteristic of the Christadelphian body that the Scriptures are approached as God’s revelation to man, able to be understood by the application of the mind to its contents. Salvation is dependent on the understanding and belief of its basic principles, and the application of its teaching to daily life. The Christadelphian approach to Scripture is to assume nothing from outside knowledge, and to eschew any belief in a direct influence or Spirit from God that provides instruction or moral strength. This book is a compilation of articles from The Testimony by Brethren Edward Whittaker and Reg Carr on this important subject. £4.00.
