Surf Fest 2010 March 5th-14th Sebastian Inlet State Park The Surf Fest will host three surf contests: Surfing America Prime series, a Grade 5 Junior Pro (the biggest in North America and Europe); The Collegiate Surfing Association will hold Florida State and East Coast Championships, which will include about 15 colleges and universities battling for the East Coast title; The U.S. Masters Professional Championship, an invitational event that will feature America's best and most iconic surfers age 40 and over. Activities include tours, kayak trips, wagon rides with a stop by a cracker cowboy camp demonstrations and displays, including one by the local herpetological society.     THE DEATH OF PUNK: REINCARNATION OF A DEAD GENRE Leila El Bashir Serious listeners of music often talk about their favorite songs and bands in terms of their favorite genres, however, most listeners do not have a clear conception of what it means for a piece of music to be categorized in a specific genre. Genre is a form of classification that most people correlate strictly with musical style, that is, the way a song sounds. People do not realize that genres today are becoming more like artificial categories defined by the music industry and popular culture to commodify and commercialize music. This popular culture can be summed up to what Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, in The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception, terms the culture industry. They suggest that culture and its products, such as music, are being commodified and that culture as a common denominator already contains in its embryo that schematisation and process of cataloguing and classification which bring culture within the sphere of administration (7). In this way, genres can be viewed as a branch of the culture industry, being a form of classification that can be managed by culture administration. Therefore, one can see how culture and genre interact. Furthermore, David Brackett in his article, Musical meaning: genres, categories, and crossover, suggests how genres are more than musical style: Genres bring with them connotations about music and identity which may encode specific affective qualities such as conformity, rebelliousness, commercialism, selling out, art for arts sake; and may encode a whole variety of social characteristics (66).

The very first time I put my name in the showcase hat, I won! I am so happy to have found the Folk Club and the wonderful people that make up the group. There is a nice vibe here, a welcoming feeling, and that is what makes it special to me. For this showcase I will present some of my original songs with me on the guitar, my old Richmond friend David Jaroneski on bass, and Ron Goad adding percussion. I first picked up a guitar when I was twelve and I was hooked! I was listening to lots of good music in those days. I really liked the swampy sound of John Fogerty, and those Johnny Cash tunes with that string-bending guitar sound (so cool). I can't say that my playing was "formed" enough to have a style, but I knew what I liked! In the early 90's I first heard the late guitarist Michael Hedges, and I really liked what he was doing with alternate tunings. I studied his tunings and began to experiment with my own. I also listened to Pierre Bensusan, Leo Kottke and the Hawaiian slack key masters and their many tunings. I began to write guitar solos using new tunings, and that's when I started playing out in the Richmond area.

Glou, CKP, Matt Spooner (Spoon) (29) Dave and Spoon attended Oak Park River Forest High school drums together. Each playing in their own orchestra and bands. equipment: gretch and dw drums Glou, Dave, & Spoon went on to Northwestern University where they met up with singer Amy Totch. Meanwhile CKP attended U of Wisconsin - Madison, where he met bass player Rusty Ehler. After college all of them returned to Chicago where CKP started an 8 piece hip hop band by the name of absTRACT giANTS. In November of 2004 with the assistance of several drinks at a bar Doko Benjo was born. Willis, a mutual friend soon joined the band.
