First stage of the Heart of Te Awamutu project which has seen the central business area enhanced has provided a ‘‘better down- town which reflects the vibrancy and vitality of our town’’. That was the message from Te Awamutu College head student, Liza Bolton when she spoke at the ‘opening’ of the project on Thursday afternoon. Mayor Alan Livingston said it was appropriate to have a ‘‘person of the future’’ speaking, as the upgrade was about Te Awamutu’s future as well as its present. He said there was a challenge now to retailers to take advantage of the opportun- ities presented by the upgrade. He commended those who had ‘‘joined in the spirit’’ through upgrading of buildings and said Te Awamutu now had something of an art deco flavour, with a number of the buildings that were built in the 1930s sporting bright colours. The Mayor thanked Te Awamutu Cham- ber of Commerce for organising the celebra- tion makeover party, assisted by Te Awa- mutu Information Centre. Many retailers had ‘joined the party’. He thanked retailers for putting up with the inconvenience while works were carried out and all the contractors, who worked two shifts to ensure much of the most disruptive work was carried out at night. ‘‘There was always going to be disrup- tion, but that has been kept to a minimum.’’ Market Street retailers had put up with having their street closed to enable the contractors to set up base there. ‘‘There has been short term inconveni- ence, for what will be long term gain.’’ Mr Livingston thanked the Heart of Te Awamutu steering group, led by Michael Cox and Dean Taylor, for their efforts. He also thanked main contractors Fulton Hogan, who had kept retailers informed through the process, along with all the subcontractors. The Mayor said the $1.6 Million project included a lot of work underground. There was $400,000 spent on upgrading the water supply, $130,000 on stormwater, $400,00 on street furniture and $100,00 TC080610DT01 upgrading Arawata Street bridge at the MAYOR Alan Livingston and Te Awamutu College head student Liza Bolton cut the entrance to town. ribbon to open the CBD upgrade. Fact and fiction converge in this talent-driven drama based on Jay Parini’s novel about Leo Tolstoy. The Last Station focuses on the marriage between Tolstoy (Christo- pher Plummer) and his wife Sofya (Helen Mirren) in its final years. James McAvoy stars as a young man who works for the couple, while Paul Giamatti plays an advisor to the writer who fights his wife over financial issues. In the last year (1910) of the long life of internationally celebrated writer and philosopher Count Leo Tolstoy, turbulence mounts as the Count’s devoted and idealistic disciples manoeuvre against his more practical and family-oriented wife. The Count and Countess have a long-standing and loving marriage, but his idealistic and spiritual side is at odds with her more down-to-earth and conventionally religious views.
